To clear things up: the 'main' trope is oft quoted, but this exact situation (a gun shot out of somebody's hand/"I was aiming for his head.") is a direct reference to Firefly.
@citruskeys The Firefly scene in question didn't feature a gun being shot out of anyone's hand. The guy standing over Mal (Nathan Fillion) was shot in the leg and dropped. He wasn't even holding a gun, but a large, curved knife.
@TalulahCarmichael2 I remember that. But Due South even beat criminal minds. Face it, this type of line has been used in almost every cheesy cop show for 20 years.
It was also used in a 70s western called "Alias Smith and Jones" where one of the duo shoots a gunslinger's holster off his hip as he was reaching. They guy is amazed and remarks (glad to be alive) "That was one heck of a shot, mister!" The shooter's partner replied, "He was aiming at your belly!"
This is a pretty standard line in various mediums from comics to movies.
See, you can't get enough Firefly because not enough Firefly was made. That being said, even if you had an infinite supply of it, you couldn't get enough, so I suppose it's a moot point.
@ThePanduh94 It's definitely Firefly. It's a reference to the episode "Train Job" where Jayne shoots a man in the leg and after Mal says "Nice shot" and Jayne replies "I was aiming for his head!"
@StreifelXP Captain Hammer's here, hair blowing in the breeze! The day needs my saving expertise! A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do! Seems destiny ends with me saving you!
@StreifelXP He's so much better as Captain Mal, go watch Firefly- it's instant watch on Netflix. Not as much singing as in Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog and still a damn good Whedon production
......so, he was aiming at a guy named Jayne?

Let's not forget "I was aiming for his blaster" from Exo Squad...
electgmax 2 weeks ago
lol, as everyone's recalling various examples, it was also in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, when Robin shoots the hang-man's rope.

@4play02 Whoops, you're right! I just rewatched the scene. Prolly gonna waste a couple days and watch the entire series again...all your fault :D

They pulled the opposite of this on The Mentalist. Hightower shot a man in the skull, Jane says "Nice shot" She answers "I was aiming for his leg".

@Mimomike Criminal Minds pulled it first ;P

It's a pretty old gag. It showed it up in the Magnificent Seven(1960) at one point.

I saw this bit on TV and cracked up in paroxysms of fanboy mirth and then had to explain it to my family. It was a fun night.

Nycki1337 1 month ago
@NIKhKIN Yes, so it is a firefly reference, as they constantly reference firefly.....
Max11Seven 6 months ago
@NIKhKIN It's actually a classic line and it's hard to trace it's actual origin tbh.
It's certain that it has been used before firefly, but it's rather firefly reference than Blake's 7 in this case due to numerous reasons. :)
metal502 4 months ago
@NIKhKIN Prob goes back even further than that lol. At this point everythings a copy of a copy in hollywood.

@karlgookey oh wait...i DO remember that. And Criminal Minds said exactly the same thing too. I wonder which one took it from who...
ThePanduh94 11 months ago
@ThePanduh94 I think Criminal Minds had it reversed....Reid shot the guy in the head and said "I was aiming for his leg" not too sure though now...
tkdchick89 9 months ago
@tkdchick89 Yeah I remember that one. Reid was aiming for his leg.
