But your same argument applies just as well to politics. Politics is everywhere, but can't take the blame by default.
As you know, politics and religion are very often intertwined. Beliefs and ideologies, whether political or religious, inform people's actions. Faith in a particular religious ideology played a huge role in informing the terrorists' actions.
I think the sentiment (often poorly expressed or over simplified) is that no good comes from faith-based belief or subscription to any ideology. What happens too often is that people who are upset about this distancing from rational action assume that religion in general is the culprit in that it encourages faith in place of reason/evidence.
Personally I think faith-based religion should take it's share of blame, but not all.
But don't get me wrong. I understand that faith is encouraged in many religions in ways that frequently don't encourage conflict, let alone violence.
How to differentiate between good and bad faith is extremely tricky, and perhaps more at the heart of the problem. I have only heard one (tenuous and rare) definition of faith that doesn't involve arbitrarily limiting the powers of reason or undermining the importance of demonstrable evidence when making decisions.

In particular I don't believe in blindly following any religious leaders. All leaders or preachers, whether religious or secular, should critically examined and held accountable. That said, even the last Pope said that faith should always be balanced with reason and that the two were like the two wings of a bird. Both needed to be used together.

I would go further than simply saying that "balance" is needed. I prefer some kind of "co-existence". I don't think reason should ever be compromised in any way to preserve faith. I don't see how faith can ever be a counterweight to reason. If faith is going to exist, it should never be an insulator from ever-present reason and demonstrable evidence.

In the former USSR atheism/evolution was taught nearly 75 years. The Bible was a banned book&parents could'nt teach it to kids. Bibles were smuggled there. Within months of the fall of the USSR in 92, the Bible was reintroduced in Russian schools. The main one was Olga Lutsenko&she was an atheist then.She is on youtube&I support her financially. As you know, politics and religion are very often intertwined. Beliefs and ideologies, whether political or religious, inform people's actions. Faith in a particular religious ideology played a huge role in informing the terrorists' actions.

I think the sentiment (often poorly expressed or over simplified) is that no good comes from faith-based belief or subscription to any ideology. What happens too often is that people who are upset about this distancing from rational action assume that religion in general is the culprit in that it encourages faith in place of reason/evidence.
Personally I think faith-based religion should take it's share of blame, but not all.

How to differentiate between good and bad faith is extremely tricky, and perhaps more at the heart of the problem. I have only heard one (tenuous and rare) definition of faith that doesn't involve arbitrarily limiting the powers of reason or undermining the importance of demonstrable evidence when making decisions.

In particular I don't believe in blindly following any religious leaders. All leaders or preachers, whether religious or secular, should critically examined and held accountable. That said, even the last Pope said that faith should always be balanced with reason and that the two were like the two wings of a bird. Both needed to be used together.

I would go further than simply saying that "balance" is needed. I prefer some kind of "co-existence". I don't think reason should ever be compromised in any way to preserve faith. I don't see how faith can ever be a counterweight to reason. If faith is going to exist, it should never be an insulator from ever-present reason and demonstrable evidence.

Even the Jews don't worship the same God anymore - in fact the very destruction of jerusalem in 70AD (a judgement event that was warrned about continually decades earlier) was itself a response of God to their rejection of him. In the former USSR atheism/evolution was taught nearly 75 years. The Bible was a banned book&parents could'nt teach it to kids. Bibles were smuggled there. Within months of the fall of the USSR in 92, the Bible was reintroduced in Russian schools. The main one was Olga Lutsenko&she was an atheist then.She is on youtube&I support her financially. I myself studied the USSR 30 years during the cold war era. The USSR was determined to wipe out religion worldwidw with atheism back in that time FYI.

@TADahar Actually I would say that all religions are different pathways to nowhere. I don't find any religion particularly compelling. As far as my attempting to lump the religions together; I can't take credit for what already is. The 3 religions do in fact worship the same god. The point I must not have made clear is that it's the details, as you describe, of the 3 Abrahamic religions that is the cause for the hatred and killing between them in the past and continues into the present day.

@PapaCapinya The assertion that the 3 Abrahamaic faiths all worship the same god is mostly a Muslim one that is maintained alongside another notion that the other two religions have been "corrupted". While they realistically come from the same tradition, today they are sufficiently different to render the fact of that tradition moot. But I agree with you that religion leads to nowhere, at least not as far as we can know or test.
