You have a kid being taught Kung Fu in CHINA. Yet they decided to call it KARATE KID just to capitalize off the original.

Karate is from Japan. Kung Fu is from China. This is like making a movie about a Mexican Mariachi Band but calling it "Puerto Rican Pride"

The vibes of lameness are overwhelming with this movie. I don't mind remakes, but making him a preteen is so weak. Daniel was sixteen. The film is part love story, part action. It doesn't work with little children. Just comes off weird and forced. What next? Jaden Smith plays the president? Or the villain in Iron Man 3? I know he's Fresh Prince's kid, so nobody wants to tell him no. But someone should have. A talented 16-year-old could have killed this role. Now, just a kiddy flick.

Well, that's probably what they're going for. If they just remade the old Karate Kid exactly as it was, there would hardly be call to do a remake at all. I can't speak for the boy, he's the kid of some celebrity, but I don't think it's too far off to say they made a very conscious decision to make him a kid and target different audiences. Seems pretty obvious the oldschoolers won't really enjoy it.

Not to argue, but the original is a classic film and a great story. Clearly good enough to spawn three, albeit bad, sequels and a remake. You are likely too young to appreciate it, but if you were around then, you would regard it the same way. I agree it is not a pure action film. It was a drama with comedy elements; as well as romance and action. It is almost universally loved by a generation.  This version might make a little money (maybe not), but will be shortly forgotten.

I have seen the original and its good. But people are treating it like as if it's Superman, Star Wars and Ghostbusters. The fight scenes then and now were stupid. Everything else was 80s camp and I accept that, but the fight scenes and Ralphs inability to do karate...yikes! At least Jaden shows some flexibility.

I realize that movies don't generally hold up. Style and technology changes. But when KK came out, it was a phenomenon on the level of all 3 of those films. The fights were corny, but Daniel was a kid with a few months of training. It was a tale about the trials a young adult goes through as somewhat of an outcast in a new place. The story just doesn't work at 12-13 like it does at 16-17. No issue with Jaden, but this is clearly Hollywood forcing a square peg into a round hole.
