  • great review, can you tell me what screen capture software you use please?

  • reminds me of terraria

  • @jakehenlan Yeah, except this came out a few years earlier.

  • @mastatsan i know

  • This game is horrendously hard

  • LAMPOIL, ROPE, BOMBS, ITS YOURS MY FRIEND AS LONG AS U HAVE ENOUGH RUBIES!

  • Btw you can walk past the spikes. You cant jump on them, but walking past them doesn't kill you,

  • @SickStickTv In fact, in the 0.9v, the spikes are deadly even if you walk past them.

  • What program do you use to record the screen? If you use Camtasia what settings do you use?

  • The Idols look like Robotnik

  • "I would buy some extra bombs but I... oh.. I lost.." XD

    I know the feeling.

  • @mastatsan

the girls actually give you an extra heart no loot

  • i wood buy some extra bombs but........ o never mind

  • Can you please help me. I can't download this game. I tried to extract it and then I ran it and there was NO sound. I deleted it and tryed to redownload it and extract it. It says IT CAN'T because its invalid or some shit like that

  • You do a very nice commentary. I was just wondering if ANYONE knew. Where does the high score save on your HDD? I have yet to find it. I formatted and lost all my saved data.

  • @underpathunderpath Thank you. And yes, I know where it saves your data. It's like most Game Maker games, in the registry. You can look up in the Spelunky Wiki which keys to backup to save your progress... I believe someone also made a tool that backs stuff up automatically.

  • @mastatsan Wow, you're a great guy. No one has ever known what to do with this but you told me in a matter of minutes. I have asked for so long and got no responses. Thanks again.

  • Spelunky is a great game to play for a few minutes, and I love the art, but its so brutally unforgiving I am tempted to call it a game for masochists and not for someone looking for "fun" in a game :)

  • @pathduck I strongly disagree. After playing for a while, you start to become familiar with the movement of the enemies, how far you can fall without getting hurt, etc... as well as learning how the levels are put together, even though they're random, they start to feel a bit more predictable, so it's easier to find the exit.

it's very hard for a new player, but I've beaten it many times now, and I don't find it that difficult anymore. Keep persisting!!

  • If you'd combine Spelunky and Patapon, what would you get?

  • @artman40 Splatapon?

  • What's the game other than La Mulana you say it reminds you of. I can't understand what your trying to say.

  • @ninjablooper I said "La Mulana mixed with a roguelike"

  • @mastatsan Thanks, I couldn't hear it.

  • tune bloody rocks might give this one a try

  • Comment removed

  • this games really fun and a few months later i still play it. iv played over 700 rounds and iv won four times. iv made it all ALL the areas wont go into detail dotn want to ruin it.

  • One time, I got a dark, restless dead, rushing water, and an angry shop keeper.

    all in one level.

    with 2 health.

    I obviously died.

  • I've never seen dark combined with rushing water... weird, considering how many times I've played.

    Sounds pretty rough, tho.

  • @mastatsan

Dark restless dead rushing water levels are awesome, seeing the skeletal fish one second and then your flares going out and you being blind in the water with those fish was definately creepy.

  • i don't think there can be a restless dead and rushing water levels at the same time. i went to this official spelunky (or whatever it was..?) page and it said that there can be special levels but not two at the same time..? but i could be wrong. and if i am, that must have been hard :)

  • Tossavainen1: It is possible for there to be Restless Dead and Rushing Water at the same time. The big fish in the water is a giant fish skeleton, I believe.

The Spelunky Wiki says this "Level feelings are not exclusionary; it is possible to have, for instance, a Rushing Water Restless Dead level, or a Dark Restless Dead level, and so forth."

  • oh ok. sounds cool.

  • little gems like this game make gaming interesting

  • Sure, it's a good game. I just wish it was harder.

  • Hysterical dames make FINE throwing weapons. They're great for disarming traps or fending off bats!

  • Yeah, just don't overdo it or she dies. Luckily, she can take quite a bit of damage.

  • Well, UltraBibendum, if that's the way you feel... Then you won't have a problem being blocked from my channel.

I don't really understand why your comment was necessary, or why you even watched my video if you think you're too grown up for a computer game, but it was nice of you to drop by anyway!

  • haha

  • What do you meani its for children? if adults like to enjoy a lil game why not let them.

  • i love randomness in games. do you know any other in which there are randomly generated levels (except diablo, ADOM and other roguelike)

  • To get health you must rescue those ladies. :) To buy items, you must duck and press X and then Space. Remember have money and you can alway try stole items

  • For that matter, how can I get back lost health? Do I have to buy a certain item, or something?

  • Carry a damsel to exit.

  • Wait; how do you buy things? The ol' Up and X trick? and how do you switch and use items?

  • I have a bit of a 'YASD' story for this game, happened today, that a lot of people would wince at.

You know how he snatched the idol and a rock came flying at him? I did that once and the rock's path took it downstairs after me. I noticed this and tried to run so that it would shoot past me. I failed. However, what's infuriating is that after it smooshed me it rolled past INTO A SHOP and killed shopkeep, as I'd hoped it would. And he had some really cool stuff, too (and not just the shotgun).

  • Can you even save in this game? >_>

  • Nope, you just have to keep playing till you get better. Though you can eventually get shortcuts to the later levels so you don't always start from the beginning. It is pretty hard, but doesn't take too long to get used to. Only had the game for 3-4 days til I finally got a shortcut to the second area.

  • Jesus christ O_O

  • Rick Dangerous!

  • Haven't played the game but the music seems superb. Old school computer game music.

  • anyone know how to get spelunky without having to use Winrar or other rar. file openers?

  • lol dude just get winrar, it's free, no viruses (or anything of the sort) and it can open all sorts of files

  • @ jason48529: Another good free compression/decompression program would be 7Zip -- which has its own format, 7z, which is rather popular . . . it can also, thankfully, handle rars and zips, and a few other things. And is also virus-and-related-malware-free.

  • At 3:40 you should have thrown the woman at the bat!

    : D

  • "this expidition is off to a rocky start" they're ALWAYS off to a rocky start, this game fucking hates everyone that plays it.

I remember killing myself with a rock once or something retarded like that. It bounced off a wall, another wall hit me in the head, send me flying off a cliff, and I fell into some spikes or some shit.

There are just so many ways you get totally fucked over playing thisgame oh my god.

how does indiana jones deal with this shit

  • He probably just mutters under his breath:

"YASD" whenever he's not in the camera

  • that just adds to the challenge

  • @ IAmPhotoBucket: He deals with it with a whip, as with everything else. Meanwhile, Spelunky here (the fan nickname for the unnamed explorer of this game) does so with whip, ropes, bombs, and much more.

  • guys... anyone please! If anyone knows, how do you get the golden hat stuck inside giant head statues in the frozen cave level?

    reply please if you know

  • You have to visit the Black Market and get the Ankh, then die on the level that has the statue. When the ankh revives you, you'll be inside the statue. You might also have to have the Udjat Eye, but I can't remember.

If you have the Eye, the Crown, and the Staff (from the 4th area) you can get in to the city of gold.

  • Wow thanks a lot man!

  • it's a chain, actually: key + chest = Udjat Eye(Lv1) - Black Market (Udjat Eye) = Ankh (Lv2) - Moai Statue (Ankh) = Crown (Lv3) - Crown + Staff = City of Gold

  • I wanted to ask, how did you actually record Spelunky? I've been trying to figure out how to record it using FRAPS, but the game doesn't seem to like being recorded by FRAPS, or at least I haven't figured out how to do it yet. In any case, great video!

  • Same thing I use for all my vids... Either Camtasia, Snagit, or Hypercam. They're just screen recorders.

  • This game has awesome music.

  • Heh. Try killing shopkeepers for fun :P/

  • and shotguns :D

  • You made an easy situation difficult when you bombed near that spider. Much easier just to drop on it and kill it thusly.

Flares are meant for dark levels when they happen (I HATE THEM).

Regular chests generally have an item, some loot, or a bomb-trap. In my experience, the chest that needs a key always has the Udjat Eye, which "awakens" you (you'll see where gems are buried in the dirt, whoopee).

  • Thank you for illustrating this video! I just played it for the first time today, and I'm loving it! It's so simple, but sooo ingenius!!!

Even little things like the Craps man, and the "Kissing Booth." It's just so "wow."

  • yeah... back in the version this video was made with, there was no kissing booth, and the altar hadn't been added yet, and several other things... it keeps growing, and becoming more awesome. I love it!

  • Has anyone ever told you that, at moments, you sound like John Carmack? Looks like a neat game.

  • I wasn`t really sold on this game by the actual challenge of it, what actually sold me on this game is the old school NES-Early VGAesqe style graphics

  • i know why the lady runs its because she was just thrown by a greedy douche....

  • Game of the year 2009.

  • if you throw a bomb at the idol and blow up the platform the gaint boulder wont chase you when you grab the idol

  • I like to make the boulder chase me. It's pretty easy to avoid, and sometimes it'll dig gold and jewels out of the walls when it tears through the level.

  • Same here.

  • Yep. Thats probably the best strategy.

  • This game is also loosely based on an old game from the 80s called Spelunker. It also has elements of loderunner and some of the Indiana Jones games as well

  • I'm sorry, but have you actually ever played Spelunker? That game plays pretty much NOTHING like this. I wish people would stop comparing these games. There's EXTREMELY few similarities.

  • It's a lot more like Montezuma's Revenge for the Apple II

  • the game looks sweet. Thanks for this play through

  • u can sell idols too

  • the locked chest has a eye in it. you can find a black market with it and hidden jewels. you always find a eye

  • is there a mac version of this?

  • Nope. Though I've heard it sometimes runs okay on whatever windows program emulator you all use. I don't know what it's called, I don't have a mac...

  • lol u can used the woman as a throwing weapon also. :P

  • The damsel is a pretty damn good projectile.

  • You can throw the ladies at monsters to kill them! Just don't throw her on spikes and she'll be fine.

  • Btw, ver 0.99 is out.

  • 5,000th view.

    This video is really popular.

  • The smooch from the woman is actually an extra hit on the next level.

  • I said that already....

  • I didn't see your comment before I posted mine, lol sorry for the redundant remark of redundancy.

  • That's ok =]

  • Hard to beleive that a game this complex was made with Gamemaker. This game is hard. Megaman Hard, and by the way, that's hard.

  • You know you can jump on the enemies to kill them?

  • Yeah, but it's unreliable. Unless your accuracy is dead-on, it'll miss and kill the enemy but hurt you, too... And I don't think it works on the giant spiders.

It's a good way to break your fall, though.. if you bounce on an enemy after falling a long way, the fall won't hurt.

  • It works on spiders. I trapped a giant spider down a ditch (which was low enough for me to climb out of, thankfully) and it kept doing damage and I got an easy kill. Haven't been able to replicate it yet though.

  • The flares are used to light up dark levels.

  • thanks for the video. good job on commentry

  • Good lord I'm addicted to this game now, I've had some hilarious crap happen. Like the time I picked up a chick in a kissing parlor, then dropped her, then watched her scream and run..and then I get shot by the shopkeep the second she reached the door of her own accord! He knew what I was planning, oh yes he did.

  • This is one fine game, I tell ya... and it's still in development, so let's hope it just continues to improve.

  • I hope he doesn't try and make it too much easier, it's surprisingly well balanced at the moment, right down to carefully planned terrorist attacks on stores to get a shotgun. My only complaint is that the run button is seperate from the action button, even though action also does run after a delay too long for me to be comfortable with it. It's slightly awkward.

  • Now it's version .98.1

  • He fixed most bugs now. He made a new build. Try it out now.

  • Version .98 is out. I just downloaded it.

  • I'm avoiding the new version just because I've heard it's glitchy, and weird stuff happens when you try to use the new level editor feature. I have it on my hard drive, but I'm still playing the 97 one.

  • It is? I guess I'll re-download 97.

  • I agree that this game is great; a Nethack platformer. Awesomeness.

  • Btw. The damsel heals you.

  • Just to be sure. I checked your video on the 2nd level when you were about to exit you were at 2hp then when you entered the 3rd level you had 3hp.

  • Spelunker was one of the inspirations, but this is a heck of a lot more fun IMO.

  • Agreed.

  • .... I just discovered. Stay in one level to long and a ghost chases you and kills you.

  • Yeah, that happened to me the first time I got to level 2. I assume it's time-based.

  • I just threw the damsel in destress on a spike. Lol.

  • Thanks for showing me this - I'm a fan of roguelikes and platformers, so this is perfect :)

  • Yea, platformers are awesome.

  • Yeah, I was thrilled to find this. You have no idea how long I've wanted a platforming, exploring type game like this, with a randomized stage layout.

  • This game reminds me of a game I played on FunOrb...

  • The game takes INSPIRATION from many things, including Spelunker (NES), La Mulana, Balding's Quest, Aztec (Apple II), Nethack, Indiana Jones, and, maybe possibly, Cave Story

(this was taken from the readme, with website names edited out for space.)

  • I know. Definitly seems like Indiana Jones, I mean, a Whip, a cave? An Idol? A boulder chasing you. Definitly fun though. New highscore 21700 score. Lol

  • I meant first XD This game is pretty fun. Thanks for the find. Just one small question. Are you gonna make a new Phun Tutorial? Just wondering.

  • Probably eventually

  • I downloaded it. It's awesome. Thanks!!!

  • Fire comment and first rate 5/5. Nice job. I like it. I might try this game.

  • You know how I love me some "fire" comments =P
