Nice looking RTBS! I have three of them in my tank, go take a look. Mine are not quite as big as your guy yet, but getting there. I also have mine in with two Rainbow Sharks (one is an Albino Rainbow Shark), and several other species of freshwater fish. My tank is very active, and entertaining to sit and watch. Sometimes peaceful, sometimes the "chase is on", but always relaxing to sit and view.
Are u kidding? That is a fairly large fish in a bloody small tank!!!! They thrives in larger tank..... here is a tip. Bigger tank and they will be alot calmer......sometimes.
Thats a pretty big Red tail i bought two and my catfish ate them both after pissing him off i tried to save them but alas... he swallowed them whole...
People seem to think that Redtails are so violent and dominant...put them in with a Few OScars and the sharks ( actually not sharks at all) become real docile LOL
I have a twenty gallon tank is 5 platies 5 ghost shrimp and 5 swortails to much for a tank that size i really like thses fish if it is over crowded what number of these fish should I get
it will only get along with other fish if it is in a very large tank. my tank is small, and that's why he aggressively chases other fish for territory. he claims the whole tank for himself, so i donated him to a 1800 gallon tank in a local public aquarium. check it out here: MY RTBS IS BACK AND BIGGER in 1800 gallon tank! A biorb won't be suitable unless he's by himself.
wow. how big is he exactly? like inches wise. i have two in seperate tanks. one is about an inch and the other is about 5 inches. check them both out at my channel.
wat else do u feed ur red tail shark besides brineshrimp? coz i fed it live brineshrimp and it didnt even hav a go at it....plz let me noe wat other foods u feed ur red tail asap............
i fed him bloodworms, flakes, algae wafers, and anything really. hey starve your rtbs for a day and then feed him the brineshrimp. it should be hungry enough to eat something. or it might be just damn picky.
actually he's now in my local public aquarium. if you don't believe me, just check out my latest video of him in "MY RTBS IS BACK AND BIGGER in 1800 gallon tank!" YEA, WHAT!
My red tailed shark was never this vicious. Sure he'd chase some fish around the tank if they went into his area but he'd never kill other fish, would only eat them if they were already dead.
20 high. If you buy the whole package at a petshop(tank, stand, hood, gravel, etc.), it'll set you back about $150-200. but if you buy used or even new on ebay, craigslist, etc. definitely it'll be cheaper than that.
i was thinking about starting to set up a natural kinda tank with the following fish: blue gourami, angelfish, betta, rtbs, zebra danio, tiger barb, probably just the first few fish but can you tell me anything you know about bala's
maybe he won't mess with your betta. btw, how big is your tank? red tail black sharks are highly territorial and aggressive especially when they get bigger, so it needs its own territory. if your tank is too small, then he'll claim the whole tank and attack the other fish. so get yourself a 40 gal at least.
yup, you're screwed like i was...my shark is in my local public aquarium now (he's in a 1800 gal) because of one reason: TOO AGGRESSIVE as you can tell. there used to be more fish if you check out my earlier videos of him.
But hey, you could keep ONE redtail and some FAST fish like giant danios in your 20 gal. the danios can escape it for the most part without injury. try that!
i bought my rtbs when it was about 1'' ive had it for 1 year moving it from a 5gal to a 17gal to a 30gal and all i have to say is
the bigger your tank the faster it will grow. this is not to say if u stick it in a 400gal tank it will grow over night but with more room it has more space to grow into and wont have its growth cut. in around a year it went from 1'' to 4'' roughly.
hes got a really red tail at pet shops theyre tails are like faded as but at good lfs' thay are red you must take good care of him i might soon get one
maybe, but for a fact, red tails are highly territorial and aggressive, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY GET OLDER!!!! i had to donate mine to my public aquarium since he killed most of my tiger barbs. but since you got a 30 gal, i think it's big enough for him to have its own territory and leave the others alone.
I just read on Wikipedia that the redtails are now extinct in the wild! I knew that they came from Thailand and that they used to be hard to breed but apparently they fished them all out and there's no plan to re-introduce them to the wild. With hormones, breeding them is a lot easier now, but I think of all the redtails that I've seen in petshops for the past 40+ years.
no not at all. He only puts his head out of his log when a fish swims by, but other than that no. Hes with three other aggressive fish paradise gourami. I still dont know what else to put in the tank with them because they're all aggressive. Its a 28 gallon. have any suggestions?
yea man it's a tough choice but i know he's like free and i could visit him whenever.... just a 20 high, which explains for his aggressiveness since he's territorial ...i still like these sharks. want to get another one for a bigger tank in the future. does yours mess with your other fish?
he's 6 inches now. he's a killer, so i had to make the tough choice of getting rid of it. he's actually in my local public aquarium right now (California academy of sciences in golden gate park,SF) which was renovated and opens later this fall. he's the only redtail shark there and i'll post a video of him in his 1800 gallon tank in september! i can't wait...
Lol xD i have a 2 inch red tailed and he chases the baby about.... 1 inch im guessing and the big 1 runs inside the castel waits for the little one to come in and chases each other across the tank.=S

That Red Tail is too aggressive for that tank.... I love him though! He could probably do well in a Cichlid tank.

not to mention red line torpedo barbs need a minimum 3ft long tank to thrive.

Im not surprised its going insane! It's territory is far to small for the species.

@nosyiam
Generally the space ruling is a minimal gallon of water per inch of fish, so it really depends on the sizes of the fish you have.
Generally Platies grow to a maximum of about 3 inches, so that's 18 gallons of space right there just for the platies alone.

yup, pretty obvious on my video, but if you get a bigger tank like a 55+ gal, then it'll be less aggressive since it can have its own territory.

they're peaceful, but get real big at 12-14 inches, so i wouldn't recommend getting them unless you got a 75+gal.
