I live in Illinois and even the people collecting change in the Tollways are getting pensions when they retire. You can retire after 20 years with 80% of your ending salary in pension and free health care for the rest of your life for driving a city bus. This Country cannot sustain this type of debt. Lifeguards in Newport Beach make over 2K saves a year. They have a high stress job that is being used as a political football by the likes of this moron. This isn't the kid at the pool. This is young men and women putting their life on the line to save people caught in riptides, and swells. If anyone deserves that kind of money, it's the lifeguards. Newport's beach brings in a lot of revenue to the city. They have some of the best trained guards with lots of experience. Pick on someone else!

i am a lifeguard currently in california and we have to be certified as an EMT and or paramedic, as well as many rigorous swimming and psychical tests that are timed. Can nurses swim out into the ocean with a current and pull a person out onto shore under a specific time limit as well as administering proper medical care? i think no. we don't just tan all day.

The "salaries" look lower on the 2011-2012 Budget Document because it is JUST salaries that are reported in that column. You have to add in overtime compensation, benefits for full-timers, and PENSIONS. Please don't comment on a document that you don't know how to interpret.

I was a San Diego city lifeguard for 7 years including 2 years full time. The guys who do all of the work are the temps (weekend and summers). Officers merely drive around checking on the temps. The beaches ran perfectly smooth without officers. The officers don't even have to re-qualify (swim). My guess is in case of a water emergency, it would be the temps who whould save them.

All public employees need to have their pensions removed (like private industry).

The pensions problem has several sources. One is the universal problem of politicians writing checks that don't bounce until the next guy's term. Another is a demographic oversight from the past. The financial numbers would probably have been okay (not as stark) when these policies were set, not anticipating a huge decline in birth rates. This is going to wreak economic havoc in many other areas too. Check out "Demographic Winter" for some real eye-openers!
