Some say this NBA season was the last season of the GOlden Era, which runs from about 1988-2000. Once 2001 came (that 76ers team winning east--ugh not too strong of a FINALS team) the league got weaker. I say 2001-2007 the NBA was down but I think its starting to peak up since 2007-08 began.
@JZ2001JC ahhhhhhhhhh, not quit. In my opinion, 2001 was the end of the Golden Era. The 2001 playoffs were epic. All of the teams were competitive. The western conference and the eastern conference both had upsets in the playoffs. The Mavericks beat the Jazz. The Raptors beat the Knicks. The Hornets beat the Heat. After that season, a lot of the players that played in the Jordan era started to wear out. I hope it picks up soon.
@inquisitive871. I hear ya but the 76ers were a very weak NBA FInals representative. You saw powerhouses like Knicks and Heat and Pacers fade away that season. The Lakers going 15-1 in those playoffs---give me a break that don;t happen in a stronger league. But regardless were on the same page that very early of that deacde the players from MJ's era were done.
@JZ2001JC I disagree. The Sixers in some ways were a cinderella type, truly showing that one star can actually do it by himself, as they came up only 3 victories shy. Now I agree its very uncommon that a team like the lakers were that season are hot enough to simply dominate "right to be there" type playoff teams, but I wouldn't call the league weak that year just because fo that. Look at the Rockets in 07-08, they had a 22 game winning streak with the West Conference at its best in years.
@playoffexpert1. Well I did say 2007-08 (same yr that Rockets team had 22 game win streak) the league started to get strong again. LOL that 76ers team was a weak Finals team and only won Game one due to a fluke. Pacers-Lakers 2000 Finals was a great series but after that the league got so watered down. Those Nets teams that went to Finals in 02 and 03 were pathetic as well (03 team was 49-33, lol).
@JZ2001JC How was it a fluke? That win had no bullshit in it what are you talking about? The Sixers nearly came away with a victory in game 2 until the final few minutes, same with game 3, and no game was an outright blowout? And how can they be weak and they had the exact same record as the lakers? Those Nets teams were weak but you're only comparing the Finals, 49-33 isn't necessarily a good record for a finals team but you're forgetting that Pistons team they got through, and Celtics team
@inquisitive871 I disagree I think even throughout the controversy of the 2002* playoffs (I am a devout Kings AND Sixers fan, and I'm not just talking about the fix, I'm talking about numerous buzzer beaters called the wrong way among other things). The 2001 playoffs were better than 2002, but I think it was after 2003 that the "Great" NBA went away and it has failed to come back.
lol the Knicks use to own the Heat....boy have times changed...even the year the Knicks got screwed they were up 3 games to 1 and lost in 7 but still owned them
Thanks a lot. This was a great intense rivalry. Every game of the 4 series went to a deciding game. 2 great defensive teams that got really physical and had stars to take over games. Game 7 of the '97 series (knicks and miami) was great too. Think it was where Hardaway completely took over and was on fire from downtown.
I WAS AT THIS GAME! I LIVE IN MIAMI AND DAMN THIS SHIT HURT. UGH FUCK THE KNICKS.
