He wasn't a fill in. They left Rage and Soundgarden in the past, and made a new band. It's almost as if the two bands never existed before, kinda hard to imagine it that way, but it's like that. The most amazing thing about Cornell was not his range, it was his tone. Its what seperates him from all the other great singers including Plant. He started to loose that tone from here on and the result is that he sings flat now when he never did in soundgarden.
