I toured Ulster 3x. (Belfast 2x & Derry). Religion & intolerance bred by hatred caused that cesspit to kick off. Not the British Army.... How many banana trees did you get in Divis, The Ardoyne, Markets or Andersonstown ?? Get feckin real
Wasn't this song more about Geldof, as a Dubliner, having issues with the corruption of the Irish Republic and the way collusion between bent politicians of the Charles Haughey sort and priests of the child-abusing kind (supported by a supine police force more interested in beating the shite out of young poor Dubliners like Geldof) was creating a Third World country on the fringes of Europe? Sod all to do with the North- everything to do with the corruption of the Irish Catholic state!
You have no idea what you're talking about, AND you're a racist.
This song was a razor sharp criticism of the Irish state at that time. Not a song that any Irish person would regard as being "In your favour"
I am Irish and a former British soldier and i also served in Ulster, 3 tours. Something tells me that you my friend are full of shite and pretty ignorant to boot.
My folks are from Ireland though I'm Irish American. QUESTION: Why the hell do you Brit guys keep calling northern Ireland 'Ulster'.. Do you know that Ulster is actually the whole 9 counties of the north of Ireland, and not just the 6 counties of northern Ireland?
Would you feel OK if we Americans called London, 'Kent' instead? Type Ulster into a google image search, or wiki it and you'll see what Ulster really is. It actually got it's name from the Vikings, you goddam limey!
@proinsiaspad im guessing because unionist party that was in power since the government of ireland act 1920 up until mid seventies was called the ulster unionist party and the police force was called the royal ulster constabualary, im sure there were other institutions of the same nature
@proinsiaspad Mate, if its Northern Irish people calling it that, don't correct them, its their fucking country. Or does America think they own Britain and Ireland now as well? Oh and 'limey'? Come up with a proper insult, not a baseless stereotype.
@godbrother10 Woah, i'm not arguing with that! It's just that he makes it sound like just because he's irish american he knows more about ireland than the irish do!
@supercop999 well said sir, my back ground is the same as yours, bob and the boys could re write that song for the present day inlcuding the lines wanker bankers and gormless polititions
Geldof wrote this song about the Republic of Ireland- He calls it the "Bannana Republic". "Septic Isle" Its nothing to do with South America but he does make reference to the North.
"Forty Shades of Green- Forty Shades of Red"
"Striking up the Soldiers Song" refers to the Irish national anthem. Which translates to that in English.
"Police and Priests" Refers to the rigid control of the Irish State and the Catholic Church.
