I played China which is a hell lot harder to play with and was able to pull it off as one of the great power in the game. When I played as German, I attacked U.S. right from the beginning, and then later on crippled the British by defeating them and made them stop colonizing around the globe. Russia's a mean beast in the craw. After several hard wars against them, I pushed them back and established the satellite state of Latvia in order to force the Russians to engage me on a border that was only 3 regions long. I heavily fortified it, and I always had 20 units on hand there.

This reminds me to Hearts os Iron 2. There you can save the game, load it with another country and make the army disappear. Than you save it again, load it with the original country and march trough the enemy's undefended territories lol :)

you need to buy from the worlds market...go to the trade menu and choose machineparts and then out the option buy > 10 or more...MP are very expensive, you can wait some years more when more contries will have MP factories too, then the price will be lower

Russia is easy to play, except the 1914 scenario. You break into Germany and Bukhovina at best, but capital (=money) falls as fast as march rain, or simply the war exchaustion raises to skies before you could say Holstein-Gottorp. Manpower falls after some decisive battles, and your leaders lack moral. Except for Brusilov, kolchak, and some others. Yeah, at least I could protect Leningrad from the rebels after fall, not so much real combat, but keeping russia in one peace is a good cause.

While HoI is a great game, Victoria is simply better. HoI is a wargame - victoria is a grand strategy game. There is a world of difference between those games.

Of course, if you'd rather play a warmongere-game, then HoI is a much better choice than Victoria.
