health care in Canada is NOT "free". If your working, you pay. It's deducted no matter what. MSP - Medical Service Plan. Either its a benefit or if your self employed - like me - you pay every month. Even Extended Care costs more on top of that. However, yes, if you cannot afford it, you are covered. I think states already cover that if you are like poor or homeless???

In the US you pay taxes and US pays more for healthcare than any other country in the world, yet people get crappy healthcare even when they're older since Medicare and Medicaid (for the elderly and the poor) basically makes people pay more out of pocket.
