One of my fav films :) the easiest way to say what basically happens is there is a guy called Andrew Laddis or something like that who killed his wife after she drowned there kids, but he creates in his mind a different character/story because he can't come to terms with what has happened in his real life. The whole film is the doctors playing out his made up life inorder to try and bring him back to sanity which they do... or do they ? mwahahaha!!!!

Charles these are the types of movies people should appreciate. It takes it from just watching a movie to an entire experience. thought provoking movies stimulate your mind and allow you to think and see things differently. Plus the acting and directing is crazy. How often does a horror/thriller movie end up being this good? The shining is the only one i can think of and that was like 40 years ago. id give it a 4-5 and imo he wasn't crazy at all but i just like to think that i doubt its true

I just saw this yesterday. I thought it was like Inception in a way, but with reality instead of dreams. Kinda saw the ending coming and knew he was crazy, but the whole "Which reality is real?" thing threw me for a whirl. lol

I think he wasn't crazy at the end. His last line, "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man?" That gave it away. He consciously made a decision for them to kill him because he couldn't live with the fact that he was a monster.

If you don't understand the end of shutter island, what happens is you find out that he is their secret patient, he was normal but when he came home to see that his wife killed his children he went insane. His partner is actually is doctor. Dicaprio becomes a different identity every few days or so. At the end his doctor calls him a different name so that proves that he has picked up another false identity.

I don't even think it's much a thriller, it's a great movie on multiple personalities, great example of how people under extreme mind pressure develop another persona. PERFECT MOVIE. At the end he did choose to die. He couldn't live with the horrible memories of knowing he killed countless lives in other persona like a monster, hence the line. I watched it a while back, many times, just PERFECT acting.
