doesn't this use the same premise as a ballista? torsion used to fling bolts? what differentiates it from a ballista? different time periods/locations?
Slow as it was the first day of shooting. We have experience of these machines and if they go wrong, it's serious. Our newer bigger one shoots much faster and has a 1500lb pull, 10 longbows worth.
Don't forget its a static defence weapon, used in castles, town walls etc. Once set up it will hit a small target area, like a gateway or doorway every time. It will go through 4 men easily.
AS they were sighted high up they also gain distance in range. Period sources say 1/2 a mile can be got.
Seriously, if anyone did want one of these then we would be happy to take a commission for your castle, chateau, front room etc.
Going price for something that is accurate, sturdy, made by craftsmen who understand period tools, materials and techniques and includes a hand carved screw drive (unique, cast in period bronze) is around £6k, depending on where you are.
