  • the soundtrack of primitive life

  • Not bad but not really impressionable don't see what everyone has a hard on for this band for

  • this is amazing!

  • when i went to see these guys in concert, weaver told us to refrain from moshing or they'll walk off - everybody stood the fuck still

  • Comment removed

  • @TheKaraider What show was that? B/c during the Portland show (Mon. 1/30/12) Weaver discouraged people from crowd-surfing - which was ALOT of. But it was still a constant, very active pit til the show's end!

He just didn't want people landing on stage and getting caught on fire.

  • Not a big fan of the whole "Black Metal" thing, but I have been intrigued by these guys for awhile now. The strung together chords are really melodic and dark and complex, the music drives somewhere.....this is some serious music and I listen to all kinds of stuff from jazz to stoner rock and even some classical. WITTR are doing some really interesting things here.......

  • 1:23 the magic begins.

  • good fucking song

  • awesome

  • No one ever mentioned "Hipster" and "Black Metal" in the same sentence till recently. I've been listening to BM since i was 13 and I've never given a fuck about labels. Black Metal is meant to escape from the real world and bring nothing from it. Its raw, real, and completely pure.

Long story short.. shut up and listen.

  • @xKylluhBx

Except its just some guy screaming a constant guitar riff. Nothing about it feels raw, pure or real. `It just sound regular old screamo.

  • @maskedbugman wow, i couldnt disagree more, this song is fucking epic on all levels, your right, that is a repetitive guitar riff, but its a damn good one

  • @Oakenbull the repetition creates the "transcending" feel. I love this band. They're playing in L.A. next month, i can't wait to experience them live.

  • @xKylluhBx 100% agree, i would rather hear variations on one or two really good riffs played in a unique style (WITTR is a great example), rather than 47 "technically" interesting riffs that sounds like bungus cream.

  • @maskedbugman

screamo? Please tell me you're not one of those people who think any song with a scream in it is screamo...that's a very different genre. And by the way, the screaming is hard. You might say you can do it but if you try it i guarantee it won't sound good. And if you don't think this sounds good, then you REALLY will think you don't sound good.

  • LOLS for hipster black metal. I read some stuff about the band I really like them. They draw their music from being.intuned with nature and darkness. And lets face it, Aaron's melodies are amazing. This song should be the closing number on the soundtrack of the apocalypse

  • @Blackfrost149

    nature... darkness.

    What is this Naruto?

  • @Blackfrost149 Black metal has always been hipsterish, it's in it's nature lol

  • not really a black metal fan but this band are immense! Thanks to Dan P Carter from radio 1 for introducing me to em :)

  • kinda stuff what has to grow on me

  • The music is good but i find the band themselves to be pretentious as fuck. Same with most of the newer black metal bands coming from the states. Hipsters should fuck off and leave the evil in black metal instead of their stupid fucking ideologies and manifestos.

  • @majorblood87 Black metal is really hipster-ish for the most part. As well as every genre of music.

  • @majorblood87 "The music is good but i find the band themselves to be pretentious as fuck."

You've just described the history of black metal.

  • @majorblood87 Evil in black metal is nothing more than an ideology at best.

  • @majorblood87 Just because someone is intelligent, doesn't make them pretentious. Read their lyrics, they are obviously in tune with nature, some some sense of ego.

  • God damn it. They are playing in my town but the show is 21+. FUCK THAT.

  • @ih8makinusernames what shitty country is that? probably us

  • @Illnathftfw US Of A.

  • I thought I hated metal until I heard this.

  • @internisus

...I think you just blew my mind. I've never heard someone who claims to hate metal enjoy anything black metal lol...I really need to hear the reasoning behind this...I'm really interested for some reason

  • @rapmetaldemon09 I really dislike the silly melodramatic screaming that seems to be characteristic of metal. It strikes me as juvenile, silly, and shallow. What I like about this music is the dense melancholy guitar chords and lines, which remind me of, say, Ratatat or classic NES Castlevania soundtracks. I also like the overall projection of this particular song's structure; for instance, the change that occurs at 4:10, which leads into a segment reminiscent of post-rock.

  • @internisus

That's very interesting. I for one couldn't imagine this type of music without the screaming, but to each his own.

  • @rapmetaldemon09 I would very much prefer to listen to this track and many others with the vocals simply removed, leaving a high-energy dark instrumental not unlike some post-rock I already enjoy. The screaming is absolutely stupid and obnoxious to me; I can't for the life of me understand how people like this kind of pretense to the primal. I can recommend electronic artists or country-blues songwriters with much more deeply felt grit and darkness than this sort of business.

  • @internisus

I love the screaming in extreme metal honestly. I don't like screamo screams but false cord screams are amazing in my opinion. It takes alot of practice, and singing is actually a stepping stone up to it in alot of cases. I think that actual singing in most cases is too pedestrian to properly reflect darkness and evil.

  • @rapmetaldemon09 I'm sure it takes a lot of work and skill to perform like this, but I think that it is too one-note to interestingly reflect darkness. Apart from instrumental music, I prefer vocalized depictions of the sinister found in songs like Radiohead's Climbing Up the Walls (v=qbtZyuOMdHI) or of the desolate in Jason Molina's music (v=Ve67-NhiTuE). I don't think musical depictions of evil should relegate themselves to primordial anger; there's much more to explore.

  • @internisus You call screaming immature and you praise video game soundtracks? how old are you? mongoloid

  • @tuulenkoti I am 28 years old, and I think that it is foolish to categorically reject music based on the multimedium for which it has been composed, particularly when that rejection is obviously rooted in a close-minded stigma that presumes games are only for children.

You should also note that my mention of NES Castlevania soundtracks was a comparison to emphasize aspects of this Wolves in the Throne Room track, although I would not hesitate to sing the praises of classic Castlevania music.

  • @internisus Hypothesis proven. Enjoy your 8bits.

  • @tuulenkoti Yes, well, whatever yours may have been, I assure you that my hypothesis that you are a discursive charlatan and a rube who is entirely too cocksure in his dismissive righteousness has proved equally tenable.

  • Am Im quite new in BM so id ask if anyone could suggest me any bands or something? Cuz i really love this stuff ^^

  • @orcastrong

If you want some atmospheric stuff, you could try out Vordven.

    One of my favorites.

  • @orcastrong Drudkh

  • @orcastrong Some other great American BM bands are Agalloch and Alda.

  • @AnarchoNationalist I alredy know both of them - i love agalloch but alda... i dont know so-so ^^ still, thank you

  • @orcastrong crebain is good

  • @orcastrong here are some bands:

Emperor, sin, origin, gorgoroth, diabolical masquerade, tsjuder, sargeist, profanum, 1349, Immortal, darkthrone, dark fortress, absu, taake, throne of katarsis, xasthur, old man's child, nazgul..etc

  • I bet these guys have some Scandinavian genes in them! This by faaar the best Black Metal sounding music Ive heard that is coming from the States!!

  • @conundrumcrux I'm fond of Cobalt, Krieg and Lurker of Chalice. Maybe not quite like WITTR but great USBM nonetheless.

  • @conundrumcrux indeed

  • I used to always listen to these guys high, you could get lost for hours in their songs. Just turn off the lights, light a candle, put in earphones and lay on your bed. Its my favorite thing to do. you can understand their music alot more doing this. but not completely. i love it.

  • Perfection !!!! \m/

  • Americas best black metal export in my opinion. this album is mind blowing

  • this music speaks to me out loud man.

it also makes my dick feel great. jk jk but this is fucking awesome

  • such beautiful music but such few people can understand it.

  • @TobakEnthusiast That is true, and sad too

  • oh shit they are american!!!!!

  • <3

  • This is my first time listening to this band, and I love it.

Recomend me more songs by them, or similar bands?

  • @HarvestHollow Weakling, Velnias, Altar of Plagues.

those 3 are the ones I consider similar to WITTR, not as good though.

  • @samrit86

thanks for suggestions, i'll listen to them!

  • @samrit86 WITTR say that Altar Of Plagues are one of their main influences.

  • @HarvestHollow ex cathedra, queen of the borrowed light, vastness and sorrow.

  • The build up to that final riff is just incredible. Atmospheric BM > all.

  • wow......im speechless, this is got to be one of the greatest songs ive ever heard.

  • i just got this record, its pretty badass

  • anyone know the lyrics or what this song is about? cant seem to find the lyrics :\

  • @Dmouseacorn band never posted them

  • @Dmouseacorn That's because they don't release the lyrics with the albums...... it's weird but I think it's for the better... It leaves a lot of imagination, interpretation and mystery. From owning all their CDs and listening to them a lot and them quite possibly being my favorite band... I would say their lyrics are about shamanism, shamanic rituals and nature

  • He is a farmer and a carpenter that is what i like about him and that is most off us. A great common person we are not like the lost sheep in this world we are the real people.

  • @lordblasfhemy

I guess that leaves me out, though, not that it matters; it's just music man

  • breathtakingly beautiful

  • Coming from the same area that this band hails from, i can only say this band is amazing. im just speechless.

  • Such roots have been proclaimated: anti-Christianity , individualism, Satanism, masochistic and sadist action, nordic mythology, idolization of nature as the solitary exemplification of purity where upon the philosophical nature of life existence is presented as growth. Atmosphere is significantly powerful. WITTR if classified as BM, it is a melodramic, sensive, cookie cutter, imitation, of a powerful expression. Their biography statement for can be found at their hompage: wttr. com/bio. (2:2)

  • @jcanderson360

Youtube: Wolves in the Throne Room - Interview Part 1/2 (Cologne, Underground - 15.06.2009). Frame: 2:49/5:59.

  • Comment removed

  • Wolves In The Throne Room is not categorically, nor philosophically, part of the Black Metal genre. Though, abstract in definition, BM has established structrual elements in it's metal sub-genre existince, as one recognizes. (1:2)

  • It's weird how, no matter what the country, bm seems to come from snowy climates.

  • Not good, not bad!!! Does not impress me but Finland hails!!!

  • When it comes to British BM I have to mention S.I.S.T. ... those that know about it know what I'm talking about.

As for "BM is music, not a fashion statement", nowadays the best bands (WITTR and the bands on Norma Evangelium Diaboli to name a few) take it to a more metaphysical level that transcends concepts like "music", "fashion", "art". It feels like listening to Diamanda Galás, like you're fucked with a smashed bottle. Pleasure through pain .... though emotionally/spiritually.

  • yes

  • This band and Agalloch. 2 of the best black metal bands that i have ever heard coming from America. Im not much into black metal but i love both of these bands.

  • For all those black metal fans looking for some real meaning and substance to a black metal song rather than meaningless hate and nonsense... look no further.

  • The song that got me into black metal, even though most people say norwegian BM or scandinavian BM is "true" or some other bullshit, my favourite artists have come from USA, (I am from UK myself, haven't heard of ANY BM bands here)

  • @mambo4dude

I'm from Denmark and I can think of 3 great british BM bands: Winterfylleth, Wodensthrone and Altar of Plagues.

  • @TehSkyum Altar of Plagues are Irish not british.

  • @ColsKill I was drunk when I wrote that reply :P

  • @mambo4dude True or not??? Check out Finnish BM bands!!! You will be amazed!!! I think we have very much quality and feeling what we do!!! Even though theres 5,6 million of us but scene is huge!!!

  • I saw these guys play in a tiny bar by candle light. It was breathtaking.

  • One of the few bands today that say "Black metal is music, not a fashion statement". Love it. Amazing band.

  • The title is taken from a painting by a german, romantic painter, Casper David Friedrich - interestingly enough.

  • the part at the end gets me, Wolves rule!

  • can someone recommend me some more ambient-ish black metal bands like wolves in the throne room? pandora has been a complete disappointment.

  • @herrropreaze Fen are quite good

  • @herrropreaze

A few off the top of my head:

    Emperor

    Deathspell Omega (my personal favorite)

    Xasthur

    Taake

  • @herrropreaze blut aus nord, altar of plagues, agalloch, burzum, walknut, drudkh, coldworld, funeral mourning, ahab (ahab isnt black metal but i'd give them a chance if ur into this kind of stuff.

  • @herrropreaze Dissection,Lord belial,Wolfchant

  • @kmetrepa Those are all good bands (especially Dissection)...But nothing like WITTR.

  • I love his voice, it's beautiful.

  • at first i did not like it but usa black metal finally have somthing good and i like it thanks for loading this up

  • holy fuck this bewwtiful!!!

  • really nice. didnt even know there were any american black metal bands..

  • @panzerveps Yea there are some good american Blackmetal bands check out Ceremonial Castings,Inquinok and Thornspawn..To name a few.

  • @NocturneKing cheers m8. i'll check them out.

  • Quite frankly, this song gives me the goosebumps.

Now this is what you call black metal.

  • @ JCxLegion: they get an awful lot of attention as it is...pretty much the 'it' band in USBM.

  • for more sick black metal from USA check Grand Belials Key

  • long ass song, but cool

  • For an American black metal band, these guys are very impressive.

  • To be honest, I was quiet disappointed by Black Cascade, I really missed the atmosphere and the reverb effects on WITTR's 2 previous albums. I was kinda confused why they would play more "straightforward" black metal... where's the mystery in this LP????

  • @95Bcool I see what you're saying, but black metal is atmospheric by nature. Unless the band is Marduk or Infernal War or something like that.

  • @dubya68 of course i agree with u the atmosphere is 1 of the key elements of black metal, some bands simply just emphasize it and as a result become listed as 'ambient' or 'atmospheric' black metal, but for me the production on this album is too 'clean' for black metal, plus that, for example, in Two Hunters the guitars sound really 'big', the ideal example for that IMO wud be I Will Lay Down My Bones..., but on black cascade, when i hear the guitars im like, meh they're just there..

  • @dubya68 and in this album i cant really feel that mystic, sort of 'natural' atmosphere that provides me with energy, for example I Will Lay Down My Bones is really really refreshing and energetic IMO, but this album is too dull for me and i rly hope that WITTR doesnt continue down this road by playing more 'straightforward' black metal... that's my opinion on Black Cascade and i wud love 2 know yours..

  • @95Bcool Oh, I agree with you. I just thought you were disappointed by the fact that it wasn't as atmospheric when it is still atmospheric, but I see your point and listening to both albums back to back I have to say again, I agree with you.

  • @dubya68 but actually i was looking for more atmosphere on this LP and i really missed the ominous and mystic atmosphere that WITTR put out on Diadem and Two Hunters, of course i agree with you that Black Cascade is atmospheric, but IMO it's much less ambient that Diadem or Two Hunters. Also, that atmosphere that i missed made the band quite "mysterious" in the past, hell even their previous logo is surrounded with much more mystery and it was the reason why i checked out WITTR in the 1st place.

  • @dubya68 plus that IMO, the cover of Two Hunters is waaaayyy different from that of Black Cascade, when i look at the Two Hunters cover i can feel this energetic, mysterious atmosphere that surrounded, and looking at their previous logo makes me feel the same energy two, but when i look at the cover of black cascade, i feel that something is kinda missing in this album... ya know???

and of course im really glad that u shared your opinion too.

  • Holy shit this is good!

  • this is probable the greatest thing to come out of black metal since emperors prometheus album.

  • I dont have the words to discribe just how awesome this song and band IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • G R A C I A S W O L V E S...

  • Finally a black metal song without the TRVE KVLT GR1MM FOREST-vocals and stereotype bullshit. I also frikkin' LOVE the chord progressions and soundscapes painted here.

This is, officially, the first black metal band I tolerate xD

  • I saw the wolves 3 times and one time neither officila in the free nature in austria!!

    Just awesome!!!!!

    no words!!!!

a own art for it self!!!

  • con este temazo se me paso la caña!!

  • this is as close to BLACK Metal as anyone from here has come

    not like Cradle of Shit

  • @deathbypowerglove Cradle of Shit is from the U. K. (:

  • Brilliant band, wise ideology, incredible music... Viva l'anarchia!

  • Brilliant, BRILLIANT fucking band. No misanthropic "I hate Jesus" lyrics, no corpsepaint, no bullshit; just epic and powerful music that takes your mind on a journey.

  • some guy posted this on 4chan, i wasn't into black metal before this band. Really like how it isn't a stereotype

  • @lawrenceguitars Something decent came out of 4chan?

  • These guys are just as good, if not better, than any black metal band from Europe. I wish they got the attention they deserved, they are bad as hell!!

  • going to be seeing them at the capitol theater tommorow...working behind stage. I'll be 10 feet from them the whole show.

  • Wow that was one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. Definetly my new favorite black metal band

  • I love this song. It's quite possibly my favorite BM song and I just heard this album the first time a couple days ago. Amazing band.

  • just amazing it feels like the song has taken my hand on an epic journey through the darkness of winter landscapes

  • love the album cover...

  • This song is fucking beautiful. Best album by them.

  • These guys are awesome ! I was reading a guitar world article on Varg Vikernes and the magazine had this band leviathan and some others on the side suggesting to listen to them and i have to say im impressed with every band ive heard especialy this one its pure awesome!!!! \m/

  • cant wait to see em with earth next month..

  • Dog,I love this band . lucifers fluttering wings.

  • Dark and epic.God I love this band.

  • Comment removed

  • Could easily be considered one of the best American Black Metal bands... They deserve more attention than they get in my opinion... All 3 times I've seen them, the crowds have "blown up" though... VERY impressive live!!

  • I would kill to see them live :(

  • @ibsayem1337

    I have and it's amazing

  • @ibsayem1337 You absolutely should, and you will, they are a band that will be touring for a long time. So much raw talent, and so many good ideas. One of my greatest re-inspirations in American metal in the last five years

  • Really? I've seen 'em twice and both times the crowd has been pretty chill. Actually - the second time I saw them a guy tried to start a pit and the band literally got mad at him and told him to cut it out. The only time I've ever seen this happen at a show hahaha. I kinda agreed with them though. To me their music is more about an atmosphere that you absorb and let wash over you. By the way - when you say "blow up" do you mean erupt in a mosh pit or what?

  • Moshing is not necessary to this but did they want everyone to sit indian style on the floor or what? This is aggressive music it induces aggressive movements. That actually makes me like this band less. They have some of the best black metal I've heard in awhile and this track completely crushes, but some of their shit gets a little boring with the "atmosphere" (i.e. electronics). This song makes me want to march with infernal minions.

  • @JCxLegion

    awful fucking band

  • @JCxLegion they're pretty big in Europe! :)

  • @JCxLegion I will totally agree with you on the one of the best american Black metal bands.

  • @JCxLegion Just found out about this band recently and they are great, words cannot express how good i think they are.

  • @JCxLegion true..but just so you know..black metal generally was never meant to get attention..some bands said they make music for themselves mostly.. even if you look at concerts..how many times u hear a black metal band playing?..very few bands are, but mostly from the new, second wave of bm. =)

  • @JCxLegion I don't think they need all that much attention, many people would probably fail to appriecate it for what it's worth. I'm not saying that everyone should keep it to themselves, but this is something that should be for people who are willing to go the extra mile to find such music.

  • very good for an US band !

  • Can anyone give me lyrics of this?

  • Amazing song and amazing band. Seen them live 4 times and they haven't disappointed yet.

  • I get to see them live tomorrow night! I can't wait.

  • This might be my favorite Wolves song right now. :)

  • I love this band! This is how Black Metal has to be... It's cold and warm in the same time, hard to describe - my english is not very good.

Also their way of living impresses me. They do not compromise to anyone...

    Greetings from Austria!

    Flo

  • I don't recommend this band over more overtly 'evil' bands for their packaging, but for the quality of their music. Burning a church or living like a shamen, both black metal themes imply an extreme spiritual concept.

  • dark and expressive. I love it!

  • could you post up the lyrics? this song is based off of the famous painting by Caspar David Friedrich.

  • Ah, the title always reminded me of that painting (whose title I had forgotten). Good to know.

Yeah about the lyrics, I own the CD and it comes without a lyrics booklet or anything like that. I'd like to see them too.

  • They haven't released the lyrics yet, I don't think :(

  • the album artwork reminds me of emporer's in the night time eclipse.

  • check out,,VERDUNKELN--(In die Irre)

  • i love how they dont try to be scary like other new age black metal. they take a really emotional, passionate angle.

  • I like how they don't speak about suicide or killing everyone or how much god sucks and satan rulez like other black metal

  • Ditto.
