  • that bit about the relationship between water, wheel speed, and rate of lift really helped me out. Thank you very much!!

  • To joeanalouf. Forget everything I said. I'm an idiot. I just saw the teapot video and obviously I'm wrong. I'm mortified. Sorry.

  • criticalcato9, actually you are not wrong. Many people put that indentation in the wall of the tea pot then put holes in that area and put the spout over it. As you said it keeps the tea leaves from accumulating in that area inside the tea pot and the "strainer" open. The concave area that Simon made is also used to give more room in the handle area. So you could have such an area on each side of the pot, a smaller one for the spout area and a larger one for the handle.

  • To Joealanouf--That little indent, I don't think it was for the handle. I think I've seen Simon (or someone else) do that for the spout. It's so that if tea leaves backwash into that area, they won't get trapped in the acute angle between spout and pot. You push the pot in to widen it to allow the leaves to free themselves. Its a sanitary thing, or so I've heard.

  • I love all your vids! I was doing a little research on Warren Mackenzie and came across the name Bernard Leach and it reminded me of you ... I wonder if you are in any way related to Bernard Leach?

  • yes i am ...youngest grandson . SL

  • Simon, do you bisque/fire your pots with the lid on or separately? I also have to say thank you for the GREAT instruction! My throwing skills have improved greatly since I have been looking though all of your videos.

  • Simon, You may be surprised to hear that this video -- in my opinion, of course -- is one of your best yet (and I've seen most if not all of them). Not only did you demonstrate both a beautiful vase/jar form and its fitted lid, but you gave a few important take-away lessons: I really appreciate your mini-tutorial about water control and pulling walls (I struggle with this). I also like the way you describe "letting the pot speak to you." Very interesting and informative. Thanks!

  • Simon, if you are online, where will you be in North Carolina and when? I assume Seagrove.

  • Hi Tom ..Asheboro is where I will be at a potters conference .I hope to be online but i am not sure exactly. Maybe some one knows if I could get online with my laptop with one of those mobile 'stick' modems that you just plug in the USB port of the laptop, then pick up a signal anywhere ....that sounds cool ! I'm ignorant of the US so if anyone can advise qould be much appreciated ...SL

  • I'm not an expert on the mobile broadband, sorry. I know just about all hotels have wireless internet and many coffee shops, book stores, and even McDonalds. Enjoy the US, Simon!!!

  • also i have been practing throwing with out a spung. and it is coming along nicesly. my mind is conecting with the clay . feeling the thicniss as it passes threw my fingers. its a cool feeling. geting out of one habit and tring to divelop another one.

  • that little inded you made for the handle area. i did that today cuz i seen thi svideo the other day and i was inpired.

  • nice hair !!

  • Hi Simon,

The lifting information was helpful. Great video.

  • It is the little details that you throw in that really make your videos so valuable. The relationship between spreading the water, wheel spead and rate of pulling up is going to solve a recurring problem for me.

    Thanks

  • Thanks, Simon. That is a beautiful pot. I look forward to seeing it glazed.

  • Simon- Thank you for sharing all your videos with us. I've gained so much from watching and listening to you. I hope to see you in Connecticut.

  • Simon, forgot to ask in the other message, are you bringing some toolkits? hope so.

  • Yes I can hear the torque on your wonderful kick wheel as you move the clay along . This looks like 8 or 10 pounds .Very nice pot and the clay is awake . Always a good sign . We are looking forward to the visit Simon !! My sons TV show with Martha went well so that distraction is out of the way and I have 4000 pounds of clay in the shop ready !!! Wesylan potters is interested in a informal get together while you are with us .. More soon Guy
