Second, it doesn't sound BETTER with fingers, it just sounds different. It depends on the sound you want. You know the band Muse? Their bassist Chris uses his fingers, and he always has. However, he uses a pick to play Knights of Cydonia in order to get a dull, clunking gallop-sound.

...umm technically all of the strings made sound. All he did was hold down the fret and add a little vibrato to it. If you cannot do it, I suggest practicing some hammer ons so you can just do it that way.

i think what he means is the little Pchord he plays. to play two or more strings @ once and make a nice harmonic ring from it, you need to hold certain frets with certain other frets on other strings, that's the only trick to it. hold random ones together, they'll probably sound bad. google "guitar chords" and practise strumming then at the right speed.
