@DecendKnightsofmalta in fact there is a 6/8 and 3/4 and also 9/2 and 1000 other, but you can transform it into 4/4... and dont say a word about musicians!
Nice intro to the instrument. Been thinking of getting one. This is certainly an incentive. Would allow me to do some nice acoustic tunes with the band.
@iSabotage I've never seen those! they certainly sound interesting, i'll have to stop by a guitar center and see if I can find some to play, I imagine there are pros and cons sound wise like with most different drum types, one i can foresee is that the cajon bongos might lose some of that drum set sound for a more jungle-ish bongo sound, which might be what you want, but most people like cajons because it sounds more like a drum set that any other hand drum :)
The brand Meinl has a broad selection of cajons and an equally broad price range, many cajonists I know use their instruments with a lot of satisfaction and they can be found in any guitar center. I hope that help :)
@savageninjachickens Ok. I want something to play with my family members. My father in law plays acoustic guitar often when we are just hanging out together, while my sister in law usually is singing. As a drummer I want to join in, but my kit is obviously not portable nor quiet. I am looking at getting a cajon.
I think a cajon would be great for that, I use it in acoustic sets like that all the time, and it works great in that kind of setting, i'm sure you'll enjoy it.
comments on this video r really stupid , he actually pronounces cajon well, y lo digo porque soy de sudamerica y obviamente hablo español, just need a sharper J but its alright anyways, btw, good lessons really helpfull
[Ka xon] in the international phonetic alphabet, IPA, which i studied in my linguistics class "x" is the symbol for a velar fricative, which is pronounced 'h' sound as in the word "horse" making it to be pronounced the way I say it, which is the correct way. If you don't believe me look it up. Can we all be satisfied now?
It's spanish for box or drawer, while it spelled with a "j" it is pronounced as an H as "J's" are pronounced in spanish, like the word "Julio" which means July is pronounced "Hulio" I speak spanish fluently as well, so I promise, I am pronouncing it correctly :)
@savageninjachickens No you're not. I know that the "j" isn't pronounced like in english, but its not a "h" either. Listen to how everyone else says it. And the "o" is a short sound. Like how english people would say "on"
@cleaningagent101 if you don't believe me, you don't believe me. Every percussionist I knows says it "Ka-hone" and that's how the word cajón is pronounced in spanish. Anyways, ask other people if you don't believe me.
@savageninjachickens@cleaningagent101 I've seen a few video's from Boyce Avenue and saw them live and they pronounce it the same way as he does in the video!
@borntodance1988 It was hand made by my uncle actually, so mine is custom engineered to my specifications because I wanted more bass out of mine. But you can find cajons at most guitar centers and definitely online purchases are an option if a music store is not in your area.
@edwinauau Yes, usually when I use mine in a full band performance stage type setting I will mic my cajon. If you have it available to you, a base mic inside the box through the sound hole and a high range mic near the top edge of the face of the cajon work well, or you can just position a mic near the opening in the back and that sounds just as good. the only advantage to the first way just allows you to adjust the levels of the highs and lows individually. I hope that helps!

Ghost strokes discussed around 5:00. My advice: never stop ghost strokes. Always keep ghost strokes going. You can make them as soft as you want but they should never stop. Then it's just placing your accents. Makes it sound less choppy.
Hey no disrespect dude, you seem like you got our instrument down pat, but check out a really great cajon player Frank Vidal - Cajón Peruano keep up the good work! And thanks for spreading more our culture!
like your vid, but it has origin from the caribbean african slaves who played on fruit boxes. just wanted to add to your knowledge. just imagine men who had played drums in africa and had to improvise with what they had and whoalah...the cajon.
Check out Meinl, they have a channel here, I just bought one from them because they have videos showing their products, so go see their vids to find out what works best for you ;)
I tilt the cajon back and sit on a chair behind it which puts less of a strain on my back. gets a rockier soud too - check out my videos on kingdoncajon for the style I use.
It was a little too simple... It was an okay vid but its for more of true begginners. Try to make one for experienced percussionists with some advanced techniques.
You don't have to..I just use a good posture by sitting up straight...because as long as you can manage to generate a good bass tone, then its ok. Tilting back is merely a style..as the way I see it. I learnt by using good posture and it works well.
Thanks man. This was helpful. I've been playing cardboard boxes and hollow pipes for years; when you're a drummer, the world is your instrument. This will be great with my acoustic group.
I am interested in different types of percussion that branch away from the standard drum kit. Do you have any suggestions as to something that could give me a cymbal or high hat effect?
Well, Aside from the snare like sound you can get from the corners, some Cajon players actually just use a high hat from a set to get that sound along with the cajon.
Most just get a single cymbal on a stand and play with hands/fingers.
Also I made a little pouch strap to go around my leg that holds two egg shakers so i can get a nice shake when I bounce my leg with the beat. I'm working on a tambourine rig to play with my foot as well.
get a cajon you'll love it. Look at the Meinl adjustable snare, then you can have snare or bongo sound.
@samcampmmgood The cajon is a great instrument, i just bot one of ebay, and the seller relisted it, it comes with a free bongo cajon for like 180 bucks. Its one the best purchases ive ever made, so if ur thinking about buying something like that grab that deal off ebay
