  • To those laying into Dave, come on guys. We all hear and play music differently, that is what makes it so cool to be musician. Listen closely, Dave is following Chic, along with Pattitucci on all those lines and runs. It is beautiful, and this is watching 3 masters making music together.Period.

  • Weckl is a bit too prog-rock drummer for me here, albeit amazingly talented. I preferred Chick's work with Haynes.

  • Is this from a dvd you can buy? If so which? Thanks

  • Would somebody tell Weckl to shut up? He is stomping all over Chick during his whole solo.

  • 驚異!

  • Wonderful!

  • DAVE WECKL....

  • This is one of my all time favorite albums! One of the greatest bands ever assembled.

  • I heard thousands of times this romantic and deep introduction of Chick Corea as his splendid solo.Chick Corea is the greatest living pianist and John Patitucci and Dave Weckl are extraordinary.

  • Fantastic trio

  • How in the #$&% do you get tickets to this show?!?!

  • @cigarzan

Pay money, bitch. You would also have to travel back in time

  • fantastic!

  • If you any of you understand the point of The Akoustic Band, it would put your heart more at rest. The thing is Weckl is not on a normal jazz club gig where he would have to use an 18 inch bass drum, two rides etc. The point is The Elektric Band was so big in the late 80s early 90s and they were asked to do a trio with the similar concept. They whole point of it was to play that way. Thats music and diversity. Just enjoy the differences

  • я завидую людям, сидящим там, слушающих волшебство звуков в исполнении мастеров

  • How the heck is Weckl bad sounding when he makes this song groove like heaven into eternity? His sound ain't bad either. I love Weckl, just plain perfection.

  • El Señor Patitucci es mi bajista favorito ! Mr. John Patitucci is the Best !

  • This is an amazing album. I've been listening to this take for years, and its amazing to see these heavy weights in action. Thanks for the post!

  • パティトゥッチは変態

  • Weckl so smooth. Patitucci badass as usual. Chick just amazing.

  • damn yeah!!!

  • I`'d need someone to upload the tune Round Midnight from this video. The counterbass solo there is amazing and very touching .Thanks

  • is this the one off the live album? sorry to sound dumb

  • @Macbethkid182 yes this is the one off the live album

  • Frío..frío...frío como hancok no hay nadie !!!

  • Such a master! Chick!!!!!

  • Patitucci is so f´cking classy in both musically and personally segments.

  • Is it just me or does this sound like a through back to how they did it in the late 70s early 80s? I mean with the bass' tone and Weckl's set? I dont know

  • listen LA MAGIA DEL SAX by Valerio Minicillo

  • well this is Weckl many years ago, check out his recent acoustic works... very cool ... :P

  • Comment removed

  • WOW!!! The Weckl haters here kill me. I am a Jazz Guitar Player from Chicago and the drummer I play with LOVE Weckl. He is my favorite drummer. I used to here the same thing with Al DiMeola. Not sure why people hate perfection. I think the drumming here is AWSOME! And Chick must think so too. I guess he could grab a couple of brushes and disapear into the background. I prefer this.

  • I agree. And apparently so does Chick. I do think the actual drums (type of kit and tuning) aren't exactly a good fit for this, but I do like what he's doing. I think everyone has nailed it, though, as far as saying it must be an 80's thing. You'll be happy to know that Weckl's playing a kit that's a little more fitting on more recent Akoustic Band stuff. Check out Akoustic Band at Montreal Jazz Festival and Rendezvous in New York. Smaller kit, lighter touch, brushes, and dowel sticks.

  • I know what you mean-I much prefer a drummer to really play and create some excitement. Weckl really got me going the first time I heard him with this band, and I'm sure Chick wants him to play his ass off like he does-one of Chick's many great talents is finding, recruiting, and rehearsing the most amazing band-members around. Just because it's acoustic is no reason it has to be "smooth".

  • Hmm, just had another listen. You know what it is? The drumming jumps out too much. He does too much and his drums are tuned to pierce through music. He needs to chill and play to compliment and accompany the piano and bass not override them and be heard as a separate sound/entity. It should all meld into one beautiful sound, mixing perfectly and complimenting each other. I find his playing doesn't do that in this type of setting. It sounds too random and all these wrong sounds jumping out.

  • Jumping out in a sense yeah, i agree. Weckl plays this piece somewhat "heavy" but still liking it X) When this was filmed because chick looks so young too =P If 80's, then we can blame the 80's X)

  • @divyx I blame the eighties for everything these days! lol. Whatever seems in bad taste I just say "Damn eighties! It's all the fault of the eighties", regardless of what decade it was in. hehee. Yeah man, the cd (just remembered its name) Past, Present & Future with Ballard, Cohen and Corea is fantastic. Check it out. If you like that, you'll love that cd.

  • @bteniswood I know Dave Weckl is considered one of the greatest drummers of all time, but it must have been an accident. You all are much more qualified than Dave Weckl to determine how he should play his own drum set. I'll bet if you called Chick Corea right now, he'd gladly hire you to drum for him, and Dave would humbly give up his throne. I'm suprised you even have time to comment on youtube. Your solo world tours on drumset must keep you very busy.

  • Dave Weckl should never be allowed to play with muso's in an acoustic jazz setting. He is brilliant and perfect for cheesy fusion but has the most hideous, awful sound that just ruins acoustic jazz. His bass drum alone just sits there, thudding through the music with that awful sounding dooshdoosh, doosh, doosh.....Ergh. Nasty. Stick with your thing mate. The group with Jeff Ballard and whathisname was perfect for Corea. You know? The New Trio or whatever it was?

  • Not sure what you mean with the awful sound, but i think this works great for me. It's just bit more modern drumming in general than acoustic jazz usually has, in my opinion. I play keys so not much drum tech here hehe.

  • lol. I actually think the opposite. I hear Weckl's sound as old ad a bit cheesy. It sounds very elevatorish. I love Corea's stuff but this, I don't know. I really can't stand the fusion sound you know? The overproduced and overly clean sound of everything....Awful, but maybe I'm just too picky. Hey man, you wanna see some modern drumming with Corea check out his trio with Jeff Ballard. THAT'S modern! I know what you mean though :)

  • Checked just out Life line from that trio, loving it!! Thanks for pointing out. Great drummer great bass player. Gotta get more of that.

  • His soloing also really puts me off. It sounds as though he is ignoring the melody and just hitting things randomly in a cool, drumistic way. It might work with fusion and some funk settings or in a drum clinic but when you lay into a rum clinic like solo in an old standard like GDS it just kills it. I can't follow the melody, can't understand what he is doing in relation to the tune....Blechhh.

  • @bteniswood

you know....you have a point....I think this is a style that you either love or hate

I'm a drummer and I cringe everytime I see Vinnie Colaiuta play a fill and it looks as if he's attempting a 600 lb deadlift!

I mean...it's cool up to a point, but as Bill Bruford said: "drumming shouldn't be an olympic sport" - or something like that

    (OK...flame suit on....I'm ready)

  • @bteniswood you know i actually agree with you wholeheartedly. and im sure your comment was not meant to take anything away from weckl's playing ability but i do feel that he's too fusion to play straight ahead if that makes any sense. and i do think that its ok for people to comment something negative about people like weckl i mean they are playing for us aren't they so we should be entitled to our opinions right?

  • @bteniswood Re; Weckl's playing? You know what. I would have never noticed it had I not seen your comment. Now I don't know if it's BECAUSE you mentioned it I now find his playing odd in this set-up, or whether it really DOESN'T suit. I shall have to listen to other examples, but on this tune I know exactly what you mean. I play a bit of bass and if I was ever able to play with someone with these drum tones and chops, I would probably have to hit him with my headstock.

  • I love patitucci's tone!

  • tsss se la rifan... que buena banda de jazz!!! bajare sus discos

  • these guys are so righteous. if you want to know this song, study this.

  • Is this available on DVD? I have 2 Chick Corea Akoustic DVD's, but this is the one I REALLY want! Please help!

  • 3:46-3:54 Pure Gold

  • like you ahaaaaaaaah nothing to say

  • WTF???

the italian is in top ten best ever bassplayers...

    if not in top 3

great dolphin street from chick and co

  • try play better then him then.

  • @ahaaaaaaaaah ahahahah you are totally crazy man!

  • @ahaaaaaaaaah Patitucci is "just" one of the best Musician of the modern era! ...

  • Fantastic musicians!

  • patitucci is a beast! one of the few masters of the electric and upright.

  • I love their version of greedn dolphin street, together with keith jarret`s version this is the best I heard.

  • the way Chick Corea plays with silence is simply phenomenal.

3:40-3:46 is genius. First there is a descending line that ends in one of those McCoy Tyneresque explosions on the left hand and then the sounds resonates for two seconds...It requires mastery to create such awesome moments.

Chick Corea has always been able to creates new sounds, new textures and highly complex rhythms while the groove is still going. Those who improvise know how hard it is to accomplish these things.

  • Jarret's version is better and more authentic !

  • this is YOUR opinion and you are completely WRONG.

I love Keith Jarrett but I would never ever say such NONSENSE.

If you cannot understand how authentic Chick Corea's version is, then keep your shallow opinion to yourself.

  • lol an opinion cant be wrong, can it?

  • actually, what that guy wrote was not an opinion...I was being too nice with him. That was a pretentious statement claiming to be the ultimate truth, and THAT is musically and artistically wrong.

  • yeah you're right, it is wrong

  • "Jarrett's version is better and more authentic" is the new catchphrase!

  • indeed...

  • You just said his opinion is wrong...How can ones opinion be wrong???? Im not siding with anyone here, Im just asking how can an opinion be wrong?

  • So...judgement is bad, but opinion is OK...

come on, let's stop with euphemisms.

Opinions are a sort of JUDGEMENT. They are aesthetic evaluations of an artistic event - or any event for that matter. Opinions are not RANDOM manifestations of one's self. Yes, they come with a personal background, but they also have to have some criteria as they require responsibility from whoever is "giving" an opinion. A judgement can be WRONG. A personal background can DISTORT the opinion for good or worse.

  • Jarrett's version is better and more authentic!! YouTube arguments over nothing are for winnars!

  • is good

  • guys guys....believe me... this is how it is done!!!!! and shut up ...weckl is great and also the bass line are great ...provide a bit of drive..... great piece!!!!

  • thanks for your voice of reason. At least somebody understands what's happening in this piece.

  • goddamnit Weckl you're all over the place from the beginning to the end

  • meaning he's too loud?

  • no dynamics on this take. that's sad because he's one of my favourite drummers

  • haha yeah it really does seem a little much

  • It flows without glitches

  • Officially my FAVORITE rendition of this song!

  • Sorry, V*****bass, the bass line walks just where it should...

  • The only thing I didn't like is the walking bass line. It didn't fit in with the feel of the song.

  • I transcribed Chick Corea's intro to this. check out my video of this if you want to hear it. Maybe I'll post the transcription of it up soon.

  • Аmazing!

  • John Patitucci never fails to amaze me

  • asombroso....!!!

  • I admire Weckl as a great talent, but there's something about the way he plays, it's a little too relentless and gets in the way of Corea.

  • I agree. Never thought of that. But playing in trio is not easy for a drummer. Just compare this video with the keith jarrett trio playing the same music and listen to the smoothness of de johnette. He lets the music breathe.

  • i was never a fan of Weckl, but Chick Corea knew that he would be exploring new territories when playing with a more "relentless" (using craftyrobot's words) drummer like Weckl. Musically speaking, the trio with Roy Haynes and Vitous formed the zenith of jazz trio, but with Weckl we have a Corea that's more aggressive, exploring the full range of the instrument in ways he hadn't done before, specially the standards. This version of Green Dolphin is pure energy.

  • Maybe that's what's bothering me about the song, I like Corea's playing alot here, infact I think the rhythm he's banging out on the piano is one of the best parts of the song and they're sometimes being washed away amid Weckls infamous flurrys.

  • that's a good point and i agree with you. But I also think there is a difference between the flurries that you mentioned and the overall energy. Weckl brings both things to the pot. The positive side is that he is always very attentive to what CC is doing and keeps a high voltage going. Corea's is an ultra refined pianist and he is always "composing" the solo. Weckl is more like in semi-auto-pilot, if you know what I mean.

Now, I have to repeat myself: Corea's intro and solo are pure gold.

  • I think that weckl is the perfect drummer for that trio....maybe is a perfect drummer for a lot of situation :) ....of course his style is very "rich" but I think he never overcomes the other musicians

  • that may be ur opinion but if chick thought in the way of his playing he would of replaced him...and he's played with for years...imo

  • Thats the thing with the more modern jazz bands, you look at people like Elvin Jones, they comp much more, instead of a drummer, the drums become a singular instrument, part of the band, and not just playing the straight swing beat that was so popular doing the swing and bop eras.

  • Weckl is more like a early version of Chambers.

  • Can anybody upload "Round midnight" from this video ?

  • geez, I got this CD back in the early 90's. It totally blew me away. But it's the first time I watch the video!!!!!!! What a shame. Chick Corea...what else can be said about this man...that he is a super-human, i guess...After more than 15 years, this recording still mesmerizes me.

Dave Weckl was never my favorite, but he did inject a lot of energy/fire into this music.

  • That Robert DeNero can do anything,

even playing a bass in a jazz band!

    What an actor!!

  • man these guys blow me away every time i hear them...amazing communication in the band

  • Some Steve Gadd happening at 1:58

  • so true

  • bought the cd. the more i actually listened to it.. the more it blew me away. this made Dave W my favorite drummer. now i buy all his cd,s and I'm never disapointed. He's a "drummers" drummer.

    Thanks for the post!

  • Absolutely. You should get Dave Weckl band's albums.

  • I've seen Chick 4 times and would see him again! Awesome!

  • 3:00 onwards just kicks ass!

  • SOMEONE TALK TO ME

seen it yesterday! lets chat kC

  • That's fantastic - I love this trio. Such a unique sound. Amazing musicianship.

  • of course there are but they are not better than the other one. every single drummer has its own style; have in mind that.

  • I'm a drummer myself and this is the song that made me respect Dave Weckl. Not that I thought he was bad but I just didn't know his stuff before this. He seriously throws down.

Anyway, AWESOME song. Great performance by the whole band. Chick Corea is awesome and I love Pattitucci's solo.

  • never heard weckl with such a deep sound .. even patitucci is flyin' ...

  • I love it the most! Most energetic performance

  • Ever since the CD came out this has been my favorite arrangement of dolphin street.

  • You can get this on CD. Great recording...they were really on fire this night.

  • Anyone know the date of this gig?

  • 1991

  • damn he was one of the best drummers in the world back then.today.............i know there's no best but if there was guess who it would be.

  • i had a dave weckle phase and know he's one of my least favorite drummers on the scene.

  • So who are your favs now?

  • Terreon Gully, Jack Dejonnete, Brian Blade, Elvin Jones, and Jeff Ballard. I don't mind this groove to much, but Dave Weckl always seems to busy and uptight to me, and I don't like his fills much. But in this acoustic group he plays more tastefully, and especially well in this video. For some reason though, I like him a lot with Michel Camilo.

  • what about bill bruford?

  • what about billy hart?

  • Or Carter Beauford?

  • only brilliant!

  • only brilliant!

  • Dave Weckl rules - he makes it looks so easy.

  • Patitucci looks handsome ever!!

  • Yeahhhh!

  • agreed

  • The three best !
