There are definitely more distinctions fom mainstream pop to a great rock band that sells a lot of records. Generally mainstream pop is set form day one. 'Britney you're going to be a sweet but naughty trailer park girl'. '50 cent you are going to be a bad boy gangster.' I think with no one writing their songs or marketing them as something they're not they have sold an amazing amount of records. Just like the Beatles and U2. Occasionally you get a band that people just get.
