I have her singing this in the 50's and then in the 90's for this movie. What a beautiful voice and I think her voice in this song is better than ever, amazing song and artist, Mon Annikki Tahti.
Koettakaapa etsiä toinen yli 75-vuotias laulaja, joka kykenee näin tarkkaan sointujen naulitsemiseen. Annikki Tähdellä on aivan käsittämättömän hieno laulutaito.
i read somewhere that the actress was famous for singing this song in either the 50's or 60's ,and the director pulled her out of retirement to do this movie.the blonde salvation army, girl kati outinen is in most of kaurismaki's movies and is my favorite actress and this is my favorite movie.this final scene is quiet and resereved ,but i think it is one of the most romantic scenes ever. both characters maintain a quiet dignity throughout the movie that is beautiful
That's pretty much it George... if you like her voice, check out one of her most famous songs called Balladi Olavinlinnasta. I like to think of it as the Finnish version of Long Black Veil... starcrossed lovers, and one of them gets buried alive in the wall of the castle of Olavi (which is actually a real castle in Finland).
I've watched this movie a couple of times, and I always looked forward to this part. Eventhough I don't understand what the lady is singing about, I simply love it.
The song tells about her longing for and memories from the beautiful park Monrepos in Viipuri (Vyborg), the town on the Karelian Isthmus, ceded after the Winter War and the Continuation War to the Soviet Union.
We are italian and visited Vyborg for the first time last week. We missed to visit Montrepos park, but the people in the boat on Saima, when we were sailing to Viipuri, were singing this song, and we watched this movie yesterday just to remember how it sounded like. Sad and enchanting, both the city and the movie! Kiitos!
"Monrepos" is (was?) a park in the city of Viipuri, Finland (now - after World War II - Vyborg, Russia). The song gained popularity in Finland especially because the lost of Karelia and Viipuri was quite a big hit for the Finns.
Hi, I've posted the finnish lyrics, I don't have the english translation of it (sorry if that's what you want). I can't fully understand the language but her voice still reaches my heart and makes me comfortably nostalgic.
Beautiful melancholy, pidän tästä kappaleesta todella paljon. i like the wrinkles on her face too, they are charming and quite unforgettable. thanks for uploading this.
Täydellistä.

Tulee kananlihat tästä versiosta. Kauneinta Suomalaista kulttuuria. Etenkin kun tietää mistä kappale kertoo. Menetetty Viipuri... :-(

Memories of the most beautiful park/ the most wonderful Monrepos/ to my heart I've hidden forever/ Monrepos
My thoughts always raise/ the yearning for the land of my dreams/ I won't forget it/ it remains forever

Quite a harsh translation, but alright:
I remember the most beautiful park/ of the most wonderful Monrepos/ often in my dreams I go/ to the woods of my fairyland
Most beautiful arched bridges/ most wonderful nights/ I have seen in the shade of the park/ of Monrepos
Back to the past/ my mind wanders again/ moments of the past/ the wonderful story/ I still can reach

Muistan puiston kaunehimman/ ihanimman Monrepos'n,/ usein haaveissani kuljen/ satumaani lehmustohon
Kaunehimmat kaarisillat,/ ihanimmat kuudanyöt/ nähnyt puiston katveessa oon/ Monrepos'n
Aikain menneitten taa/ aatos taas samoaa/ ajan sen mennehen,/ tarun ihmeellisen,/ voin vieläkin tavoittaa
Muistot puiston kaunehimman/ ihanimman Monrepos'n,/ iäks syömmeen kätkenyt oon/ Monrepos'n
Aatoksein aina saa/ kaipuun unteni maa,/ puisto rakkauden;/ sitä unhoita en,/ se säilyy aikojen taa
