The sound is a little off but, I love the way these two men present history. They make it fun, and I too would love to see the rest of the episodes. It's also great that they present more than one opinion.
@UniversalBrother108 And yet arguably among the greatest historians, of any nation, of the 20th century. Maybe you're the idiot and don't have the faintest clue about basic historiography?
They actually (ultimately) agree with each other, and are just sharing opposing arguments for the sake of good telly. The stuff Gwyn goes on about matters because of the stuff Wynford goes on about.
Come on, release this whole series on DVD, or repeat it on primetime telly.
there were thirteen half-hour episodes in total. I think a book has come out around it, but the series has never come out on video/DVD.
Where to begin?, When Was Wales?, Aliens in their own land, The Norman smash and grab, Under the heel, Swallowing the leek, The Gentry Century, Rebirth of a nation, The Crucible, From riot to respectability, How red was my valley?, Exodus, The Death of Wales?
I was made aware of this series by someone in the Communist Party in Wales - Gwyn Alf was a CP member - who told me that it was available on DVD, but my research so far has come back with nothing :/
There were 13 episodes and it doesn't appear to be available anywhere. I had one episode taped of the telly over 20 years ago. If I ever get any more, I'll upload them. Thanks for looking.
They are seriously acting. And why did Vaughan-Thomas have to say "Let's look through the eye of the white horse... at Welsh history"? They are so charismatic that it really seems like this is off the page.
One may say that Wales has progressed as a political power, and such historical tragedies will not repeat themselves. Famous Welsh figures such as Gwyn Thomas make thing that a 'nationalist belief' is irrelevant and hazardous for modern Wales, however I leave you with two words - Cofio Dreweryn.
The importance of this documentary is to decide how Wales as a country and as a nation can gain back the power, rights and prominent individuality that it once had (whether that means independence or not).
I think these historians are missing each others point;
The continuity of Wales' beauty is the inspiration for Wales' brighter future and Wales' social conflicts and tragedies are the motivation to achieve that goal.
Firstly, I'd like to say that if any comments are to be made that are of similar theme to the ones left by 'jannycrobs' then we may as well not even bother study history as his/hers views are complete rubbish.
What this documentary is about is not to debate the facts or myths that have developed or depicted Wales as a country or culture, but Wales' philosophical and political state within the modern 'Great Britainised' ethos of the world. (continued in next comment due to lack of characters)
The Welsh, as I see us from my Canadian perspective: Beaker Folk who adopted/adapted a strain of the Celtic language, were Romanised, driven to the Western hills where we were partly Anglicised linguistically, and then--not unlike the Irish and the Scots--gradually scattered throughout the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, the US, South America, etc. Sadly, I don't think my view is too far off the mark.
I meant 'Anglicised' within England and throughout the world. Have you ever noticised those English names: Wall, Walton, Waller, Wells, etc. They all mean the same thing: 'Welsh'! trapped within their 'native' England!
Wales is a GERMANIC word meaning 'foreigner.' It's what the Vikings named us (I think it was theVikings anyway). Our name 'Cymry' means 'Comrade' while ironically, the sname for English 'Sais' means 'Saxon'.
And none of them are Welsh surnames. They have no tartan nor cest from here. They held no seat.
I remember watching this as a teenager. Can't think of a better introduction to my own country's history. Why isn't it on DVD? Maybe the Welsh Assembly could subsidise it??
Yes I remember this, a wonderfull doc, Also it shows just like these to gentlemen, us Taffy spent/spend to much time arguing with each other while our land was stolen from us !

Of course that's wrong. Stop trolling.
the Welsh and some Cornish are what are left of the british after the romans. The Welsh language is older than Irish, English and even latin.
'driven to the Western hills where we were partly Anglicised linguistically'
Anglicised? What the hell? Of course they weren't. The romans never got to the far west.
