I saw John Denver sing this in Irvine Meadows over 20 years ago and it brought tears to the audience. We miss you John and your wise words. God Bless You
My dad used to listen to music when he couldn't sleep. One night at 2am he hit the wrong button so it played into his headset and speakers on almost full blast....this was the song we had to wake us up that night!
It wasn't cool to admit you like John Denver in the 70's and I was one of them. I've finally come out of the closet to admit what great talent he was and how much I admire his music. As much as he left this earth too early, what a legacy he left us.
Modern music is shit. True musicians and people who had something to say have gone the way of the buffalo. I am a 28 year old Death Metal listening UFC watching punk rock guitar playing venue loader.......I miss John Denver. Real music knows no bounds and if you like good music then you are okay in my book. This is good music.....but Im gonna jam some Cannibal Corpse right after this.
This is the best live version of "Calypso" on YouTube better even than the original. John Denver was an amazing talent, an American original who should be better remembered today.
John Denver was no ordinary singer, he was a one in a million voice who could captivate an audiance and bring a story to life with his voice. Few Artist's can do that.
I wish they would remaster this. I know they can do a better job of audio mixing so the orchestra and chorus are better balanced and you can actually hear them. What a gift this is.
His voice soars like the mighty eagle in flight looking for space, and see how beautiful what lies below, teeming with action and life. He himself tried to be like an eagle, in a plane, then swoop down below only to find himself up again... in the presence of God to sing and give glory to Him forever more.
@elsoncanlas oh dear,... john Denver was just a singer, he was no more from the country, than i am from japan ,its all fake ,same why Elvis Presley ,never wrote a song in his life ,its all BULL :)
@spinlessbastard1 "just a singer" huh? why don't you post a video of yourself trying to sing this song...let's see how you do.
al pacino doesn't write his own dialogue in films but does that make him less of an artist? john denver had one of the purest voices in pop music. elvis was the most successful popular singer in pop/rock/country music history and his music will live on when everyone human being on earth today is dead. but he's "just a singer."

Holy Mackerel and all other fish species, this is an epic rendition of John Denver's epic song in tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau who was always, and will always be, one of my greates heroes ! Thank you so much for posting this!
I got shivers upon my shiver upon my shivers, and thats an understatement!
He can sure belt out a great tune. I, like a lot of people prefer to listen to the greats like John Denver, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and the like, purely because today's music is so abysmal. each era, the 20's through to the 80s were each a distinct era of music in their own right, but from the 90s music in the uk has gone to the dogs.
Makes my heart soar, and brings tears when I think of the gulf.... To work in the service of life and the living,in search of the answers to questions unknown. To be part of the movement, part of the growing, part of beginning to understand...--
What I remember most of John Denver is that he sang songs that made people smile, and feel happy, they warmed your heart. This is what entertainment is supposed to be, not the dark songs of today that mean nothing.
IT annoyed me all the attention given to Michael Jackson when he died and the fact thatJohn's death was barely mentioned. Those of old enough can remember when John was as big as mj,and unlike Wacko, when his career was on a downer,he was still out there in the community trying to do good-not hiding in a mansion pretending to be 8. John deserved more respect than he got.
What the heck is the matter with you people??? A fantastic John Denver song and people are on here arguing about homosexuality, are you freaking kidding me!!!!
a great environmentalist GOD bless him thank you JOHN DENVER for visiting BELIZE where you met Jacque Costeau and was inspired to make this song CALYPSO MY PEOPLE THE BE.LIZEANS LIKE YOU ARE VERY ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS .t HANK YOU WHEREVER YOU ARE .Manuel NOVELO HUCKY
All these years later, his voice still gives me chills, no matter the mood I'm in or the people I'm with. My friends look at me as I've grown a third eye when I crank this song up, but I don't care...it rules!
Thank you PirateDanRocco! That was a very affirming message. John's music crosses all divides if we will just listen. And to ZAOUWV, yes,he did. It does the same thing for my spirit as good old fashioned gospel music. It brings me peace, comfort, reflection and joy.
Don't you be freaked out about being an "African American" who loved John's music! His music was meant for ALL races! It was meant for all the people who wanted to connect to him on a one on one basis!
Brilliant performance of my favourite song by John Denver. I remember seeing this back in the early 90's, and remember being completely amazed at how well his voice was holding up.
As an African American woman I often baffle my friends when I pull up jamming to Denver tunes in my car! I ADORE this musically genius the likes of whom we have not seen since. I miss his work, his spirit and the message of love and tolerance that he lived.
Music, GREAT music, like this, knows no age, race, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. It speaks to the heart, and there are good hearts in all walks of life. This song speaks of love, respect, and joy, and if those same things are in your heart, then the music speaks to you as well.
@MankoLKR What? What does that have to do with anything? This is a great song, one of the few in history that can get a crowd of strangers to feel the same emotion, and to do the same thing.
This has nothing to do with sexual orientation. This is just a song of pure joy. That's it.
@TheIlluminatus503 I am not against homosexuals, much in the same way that I am not against alcoholics or anorexics; they all have disorders and could benefit from treatment. I am unclear why you beseech me to communicate privately and am equally puzzled as to what interest you have in the possibility that I will "make enemies" in the nebulous world of the Internet. Is your life so void of substance that you trouble yourself with the well-being of someone you do not know? How sad!
@MankoLKR I'm just saying that I believe that homosexuality is not a disorder, and soething that is not a disorder can not benefit from treatment. Ya know what I'm sayin'? And I thought it would be smart not to talk about this stuff HERE because I think that what you are talking about, [homosexuality being a disorder] is going to piss a lot of people off.
I wish the Boston Pops would release this concert on DVD. People who got to see John perform live in concert are so lucky. This performance of Calypso was amazing. John had an unbelievable voice, and he gives you such a lift when you listen to him sing. His music continues to inspire millions of people around the world.
For somebody who's more into rock, alternative, and Irish-Scottish traditional, this is weird to admit, but...I went to a John Denver concert in Springfield, Missouri, in 1978 (I think that's the right year), and it's still the best concert experience by far I ever had. I think it had something to do with the fact that Denver could really sing--his voice was better live than recorded, IMHO--and the musicians were primo. To this day, I've never seen anything like "Calypso" live that night.
what?! I was living in Salem at the time! ARGH! however, I did manage to see his concert in Portland in 1981 while working at Crater Lake. Nosebleed seats, but great acoustics at the Rose Garden! :)
But we had third row seats at the armoury, and it was awesome!!
My ex- wife to be (haha) Bought tickets for us and my Mom ( who loved John ) From that day on my Mom loved her! In fact I don't think she ever got over the divorce...
But it was the BEST show I have ever seen, and it was just him with no other backup!
John's influence to world's music will forever be felt as the earth turns... this earth he glorifies in his music, this one earth where he was born and lived for a short time. One man with the love and courage to tell people conveyed in music and poetry the beauty and sacredness of this one planet where we live, and left it a better place.
A very good live performance. John was so in his element.
