  • The tone seems so flat...

  • he has the most fun on stage:))

  • @JesperMusik damn right dude, he's got the tones, feelings and simply a huge expression in his solo's. He has to play more bluesrock again and stop with the softshizzle.

  • @TheRJSMusic He's being pretty beasty about playing guitar live now a days.

Have you seen one of his latest concerts in japan where he did a solo version of this song?

    Crazy stuff.

  • @TheRJSMusic actually from 2010, but hey...

  • Ahh, I can't hear any cymbal crashes....other than that, awesome!

  • Switched it from bridge to neck during the intro so smoothly. "Like it never happened."

  • this is real music and talent!!

  • Steve Jordan's face is legendary... so cool

  • DAMN pino keeps it FRESH

  • What's the name of this song? or is it just a jam?

  • @toefes "Who did You Think i Was", thats the name of the song ;)

  • @Tiago1223pt

    Thanks mate!

  • Hey people Just listen to John Mayer No one can sound as good as anyone Can YOU sound as good as SRV John Mayer or anyone for that fact listen to the song enjoy and let it go!

  • John is good BUT he will NEVER ever come close to SRV. Stevie had the groove that John will never have

  • @FenderPlayer86 dude, stop bitching.. by no means is he as good of a blues player as SRV; though there are things John can do that SRV can't. They're completely different artists and have completely different "grooves" as you would put it. Stop trying to act like you know what you're talking about and just watch the video.

  • @bjhMus1C S.R.V is an original blues guitarist. John is just a copycat. John doesn´t play from his soul. He only is a "coverboy" Stevie was the real deal. So u bjhMus1C, you clearly don´t know the differense between blues played from the heart and blues played that you learned in a music-school. "Play what you feel, feel what you play"

  • @FenderPlayer86 You "fenderplayer86" clearly don't know what soul is.. Mayer has a ton of soul and talent, and if you can't realize that you're more ignorant than i thought.. i agree that he is not anywhere near SRV's level in terms of blues playing, i don't think mayer was born to play the blues. but just because its' not the absolute best or he didn't write the song he was playing doesn't mean he doesn't have soul and feel.

  • Comment removed

  • @FenderPlayer86 and since when did the music school aspect come into play? if you're referring to John's time at Berklee, he only went there for two semesters. regardless, you obviously can't learn how to feel.. and i don't see how covering a song makes him a copycat (although he did write this one). like i said before, stop trying to act like you know what you're talking about and watch the video.

  • @bjhMus1C Bye the way. If you are a guy who think you know all about whats blues and not, where are all your uploaded videos with you playing the blues?? :D

  • Comment removed

  • @FenderPlayer86 ..i thought we were talking about John and SRV, i don't see the point in me uploading a video.

  • haha wrong pickup on the intro...

  • Jimi Hendrix ,SRV, and John Mayer are the the smartest and most creative guitar players ever.

There is no point in arguing which one is better because they are all the best at guitar.

John Mayer has a lot more to offer than just guitar playing though.

  • He has a lot of influences but that doesnt mean he copied them.Every guitar player plays other peoples stuff. They learn from eachother..No one plays like john mayer. He learned from other people and plays some of ther riffs but who doesnt do that? John Mayer has his own style.and he can play any style better or just as good as anyone. He also plays thepiano/keyboard and harmonica. He has a great voice and he is a brilliant song writer. He one of the best of all time

  • @25Ragz didnt you know this guy dont write his songs? he has a songwriter, i saw on tv a group of fans that was going to met him and they where all exited and the guy comes in and somewhere in the meating the girls ask him where he get the inspiration for the songs and he answers them he doesnt write the song , he has one of those pop songwrighters, those girls where so disapponted , me included i coudnt belive it. sorry for the english

  • @kanopiucas LOL!

he was only kidding! and the whole "john mayer has a tv show" was soooo funny! i can't believe you took it seriously!

he's one of the best songwriters of this generation, If not one of the best songwriters EVER!

  • @kanopiucas

That comment right there just shows how much you DON'T know about John Mayer.

If you even bothered to research him you would have stumbled across his sense of humor somewhere...obviously, you didn't.

    He was kidding.

    Obviously.

I'm shocked that you would even consider buying that...wow.

Who DID you think he was?

    Some loser?

  • Dude. his voice sounds just like Stevie Ray's on this Song. Thumbs up if you agree!

  • @theblackestseth ummm no

  • weak

  • ....back when Steve Jordan had hair.

  • Hahahaha They did a died down version for the conservative ellen crowd...Hilarious!!!!

  • Can't remember the name of this song !!!! Can anyone remind it to me, please ?

  • @supermecis who did you think i was

  • I don't care what anyone says. I LOVE his groove.

  • John Mayer wastes his talent. I wish he played more like this.

  • @Nobhillbluesman you just have to go see him live.

  • god i fucking love the tone

  • Are these guys going to put out another album as the "trio"?

  • Steve and Pino played on a lot of the tracks on Battle Studies and Steve actually produced the album with John and he's playing drums on tour! :D

  • @drdanr em i remember seeing an interview where he said he would like to have his next album with the trio :) which would be epic. Only problem is i dont think it would be Steve on the tour, if there was one :(

  • Is this a Hendrix's tribute Strat? It looks like the one he destroyed at the Monterey festival.

  • @AlexisGuitar94 Yep it is one.

  • he think he's johnny depp

  • yeah dude he is his own player completely. so sick

  • That tone is SICK! John's the man... not the next Clapton. John Mayer.

  • @noblezada hes way better than clapton... more soul more intensity more creativity...smarter. He's one of the best players by far

  • yeah the tone is kinda flat here. It sounded awesome all the times I've seen him live tho...

The next clapton? Hmm.. I dunno. Maybe! He's got fucking all the potential in the world - that's for sure!

  • the tone for most musicians when it comes to playing these tv shows is usually quite worse than usual because they are in the studio and they have serious volume limitations. lots of these artists today still like the overdrive from tubes, and they cant get it as good from lower volumes.

  • @JesperMusik I thought it was flat too but then I listened to it again. Listen too steve jordan on this one. The drums sound like cardboard. He's still a BAMF drummer though.

  • Thank God he has short hair now...

  • damn his tone sucks here. Go ahead and thumb me down but you know i'm right.

  • never tought of it before but his singing really sounds like stevie ray ha im probably going to get a load of grief for this comment and i no he is influenced by him

  • here's your grief: +1 for you, my friend.

    Mayer's the next clapton

  • grief is a bad thing haha but thank you i agree he is good

  • i know that, i was being sarcastic...

  • oh right haha dnt enjoy the way sarcasm transfers on the internet myslef

  • wow thats a bit of a stretch

  • youre an idiot

  • I think the gtr sound's abit light for the rythm

need to give some punch... but overall is great :)

  • What is this song called ??

  • "Who Did You Think I Was" is the name of the song! XD

  • Who did you think i was^^

  • is that Bubbles from The Wire on drums?

  • no, steve jordan

  • Haha I wish, I love that guy.

  • What the fuck is the Wire???

  • its steve jordan

  • at first his tone sucked. but it got better. probably wrong pickup. i still didn't really like his sound here. i dont really like the sound of the dumble steel stringer. i actually like the two rocks way more

  • he switch from the middle pickup to the mid-neck. I guess its a preference of yours but each can be better than the other in tone depending on the style

  • the second tone he uses is def just on the neck pickup.

  • yeah i agree with nthseih its def neck pickup..mayer only really uses the neck and bridge/middle pickup

  • cause thats what stevie used

  • Steve Jordan has a funny lookin haircut there ha

  • is it me or do the drums sound small compared to the "Where The Light Is" concert?

wow, that was a stupid question for me to ask.

but no...does it just sound small? like...not thick. bad EQ on it or SOMETHING. The 'thin' sound on it is annoying me. =(

  • Yeah the sound will vary from venue to venue, and obviously more work went into the Where The Light Is DVD's sound, then it did on the Ellen Show.

  • god that drum beat is awkward

  • does anyone know the name of this song?? its such a good song

  • the song is "who did you think i was" by John Mayer Trio...and it's amazing!

  • better than simple plan, lolzzzz

  • No it hasn't. Eric Clapton has said he believes John Mayer is the best musician of his generation. If you can't believe Clapton on that, then you can't trust anyone.

  • Better than a republican country singer talking about his truck or his dog.

  • Love how you threw republican in there...because city people just cant possibly be republican!

  • That's bullshit. I live in a city and have tons of Republican friends.

  • you obviously didn't catch the sarcastic way of writing. Look at what the guy said above me...putting republican in a sense that only country people are republican. He couldnt be more wrong.

  • Yeah I will agree that John Mayor is unique. He is influenced by the greats (Hendrix, SRV, Clapton) but he has his own style and it really shows on his album "continuum"

  • anyone know what the amp int he middle is? usually he has the 2 two-rocks and a princeton reverb or vibro king in the middle. is that his dumble?

  • yes it's a Dumble Steel String Singer with a Dumble 4x12

    Pricey & rare amps ^^ !

  • its not like he fucking trained his voice to sound the way it does. thats how his voice naturally evolved.

  • dude he's himself..... how does he sing like SRV? search youtube for videos of him covering texas flood and other fantastic songs, you'll see that he was the real deal ever since he was 17.... he had to go pop to get in the door.... now he has the luxury of doing whatever he wants, and that is playing the blues..... i think Stevie Ray would be proud of an artist writing their own material and staying true to themselves, that's who JM is.

  • Steve Jordan looks like a homeless guy with those dreads on the top of his head like that. haha

  • that was awesome

  • SRV used 13s but later on Rene his guitar tech would convince him to go as low as 10s when his fingers would hurt. Also SRV's action was set high to get a good clean tone.

The thing is 13s, 10s or 8s, tone comes from your fingers mostly. So no matter what gauge SRV was playing on a given night, it sounded like SRV. :)

  • i can't even play with 9's. i think it sounds bad.

  • Stevie Stevie Stevie .. guys, this is John Mayer, a whole different guitarist. SRV is a legend true, but why always comparing these guys. Just listen to the focking song man..

  • @0126578 your joking right. this guy is a complete rip off of srv. all his riffs and singing is'nt influnced by stevie its completely the same. i would'nt compare him to srv cause he is just a tribute act. he is a scam

  • Funny you should say that, this is a re working of an old hendrix track. So in otherward you think srv ripped off hendrix which any one will tell you is crap

  • @clerkhog Stevie's nice but where do you think SRV get most of his licks and riffs from? Albert King , Jimi, Buddy Guy , Freddy King, Lighting Hopkins etc. Im talking about damn near note for note too. If Mayer is a so-called ripping off what was SRV was doing in his time? Tone is one thing , what you play is another.

  • @clerkhog and im sure you can pay tribute to a great far better than him. the guys genuine. he just happens to be making money for something he loves. he sings nothing like SRV lol

  • JOHN is an amazing singer!

  • Actually, Stevie Ray at one time tried to put 18's on his guitar. He obvious had a difficult time playing them and the tension of the string would probably ruin the neck. He always wanted a bigger tone but he figured his fingers couldn't handle that kind of abuse so he found a happy medium with 13's.

    R.I.P. SRV!

  • I think he only used a 18 high e and not an entire set for 18s.

  • he is using a hendrix monterey pop strat very rare nic guitar love the paint job too thats how he gets that hendrix tone

  • the best i love ellen and john mayer!

  • hate that john mayer dosnt show his bluesy side much, so good at it.

  • This was 2 years ago, before he released Continuum; his bluesy album.

  • The name of the song is Who Did you Think I Was

  • what song!?!?

  • His guitar remind me Hendrix's guitar from monterey...

  • it is the Jimi Hendrix model from Fender. Designed to look exactly like his guitar from Monterey.

  • F*** YEAH!!!!!!!!! THIS IS GREAT!!!

  • anybody knows which strings he uses...

seems to be pretty big ones...

  • prolly heavies like SRV

  • Nah,actually he uses pretty light ones,Earnie Ball Super Slinkys most of the time, sometimes Power Slinkys, like $7 a set.

  • are you serious?

  • Yeah dude,theyre 9's.Really easy to bend.

  • dude, 9s will never sound like that...

  • Well,I just know what strings he plays,Super Slinkys and Power Slinkys. And I play w/9's.They sound nice. But my pickups dont.

  • he uses 12s.. and actions are high..

the more the string is far from the pickups..

the more clear the tone..(that's why his actions are high..)

the more string is near from the pickups.....

the more output but unclear tone..

i use bottom heavy.. for humpbuckers..^^

  • Oh,shit,I got my info mixed up,john plays regular slinkys(10's) and power slinkys(11's),but yeah, john plays w/ high action?I couldnt tell,it looks easy the way he plays.

  • yeah dude.. that's why john's tone is so incredible!..

if the string is hard.. the more output it can give.. and the greater tone..

srv uses 18!! *don't you know that?

    i aint lying man..

    my cousin's a guitar tech..

  • yeah,the more tension a string has,the more it vibrates,producing more sound.And yeah,Stevie tryed 18s a few times,but his main gauge was 13s but thats still massive,considering I play with 9s.haha,Im weak,:P

  • 18's? He might have "tried" as in put them and realized that it would be utterly impossible to use 18's for more than a set without ruining your fingers. Everyone knows Stevie used 13's and later in his career even went down to 12's to save his fingers.

  • He never used them long, yeah I think it was more of a,hey gear tech put these on so I can see what its like thing, but Ive tried 12s on a strat, and it suckssss. Its almost impossibe to play.

  • He used a 18 high E for a little while, the rest were for 13s I think.

  • yeah. stevie ray used 13's or 12's most of the time but would seldomly use 14's or even 15's. of course that would have been a one or two time thing.

  • That is utterly impossible to play 18s.

  • that's what i thought..

    that must be a typo..:))

  • yea the 18s story is just bull. Stevie just used 13s or something

  • No SRV put 18s on his guitar for a very short period of time because of one of his influences Dick Dale this wasn't a regular setup though only for the shows he played with Dick I think.

  • Dude Dick Dale uses 16s

  • On Fender Stratocasters you can adjust the hight of the pickups, so the action itself doesen't have to matter when it comes to how close the strings are to the pickups.

  • SRV used 13s but tuned down half a step to E flat. even that little down tuning takes off a lot of tension.

  • I agree. I am not the biggest fan of his, but he is pretty funky. Pretty talented guitarist.

  • It's amazing to me that people can say they can't stand John Mayer. I've been following him since before his first song played almost 10 years ago. People say he's just a fad... I think he's gonna be around for the long haul. If you even watch him for a minute, you can see how much fun he's having. AND he's making it... what have you done today that you can say that???

  • LOVE this jam

  • I can't stand this guy but I must admit - he's pretty impressive in this clip. I hear influences by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Now I know why he's such an egotrip. Not too shabby...

  • John is a rediculous guitarist...bravo.

  • MY GOD! HOW DOES HE DO THAT? best gutarist ever

  • that was cool

  • what's this song called?

  • This song is called Who Did You Think I Was?...

  • I love him. He's so good! His ability to change up his style with every album is awesome. I can't wait to see him in august! :D

  • Anyone know the name of this song?

I've been sitting here tabbing it out,

    but I don't have a name.

  • "Who did you think I was"

  • who did you think i was

  • I love that he has a kind of unique dance/groove for this song, and only this song!

  • Slick... I like it.

  • i think the women at ellen were blown away.. haha

  • Excellent!! Love it :D

  • i think he has the wrong pick up on in the begining? u can hear the change about 5 seconds in

  • I don't know why u got a thumbs down for that, but yeah he totally changed to his neck pick up 5 seconds in.

  • lol yeah, I actually liked how it sounded first, but I know how strats can be, I knock y pickup out of place all the time when I get too in to it. it might have been an accident for all I know.

  • did you every think that maybe he just doesn't get along with his family? I don't speak to my family but that's because they're all douchebags, not me.

  • if you really think your faimly are all douchbags, and your the only one that's not, maybe your the one with the problems... i love mayer, but i don't know him, maybe he is a jerk. call you mom douchbag! lol.

  • yeah, my mom won't speak to me because I don't like her boyfriend because he's an ignorant bastard. My Grandmother doesn't like me because I'm the daughter of her daughter who she doesn't get a long with and I could go on and on but you have no right to say what you said. I tried to sort things out with my family but they won't budge. So I got a tattoo and lip ring. heaven forbid... And the tattoo said love. but they won't listen to reason.

  • hmm, sad story... tissue anyone?

  • why the fuck are you saying this here?

  • noonecares

    go myspace pls

  • wow ur jsust a whiny fucker arent u i have sum advice for u

grow a pair and stop wasting evryone elses time this isnt a fuckin therapy session its a john mayer video for christ sake

  • i guess thats a really good solution to your problem.

    fuck off

  • Eh...someone go get the razor blades.

Why don't you save us all the missery & go write a poem about it?

Better yet, how bout you start a My Chemical Romance cover band?

    WHY DO ROSES HAVE THORNS?!

    Friggin emo.

  • i met him and he had his head up his ass. he was a dick. but hes still a kick ass player.

  • well, i suppose he's got a reason to be. lol. :P

  • yeah you can tell he's cocky and even a bit arrogant whenever he goes to talk shows or interviews but no one can argue about his skills on the mic or on the guitar. awesome music

  • whats this song called?
