Kim is a genius... listen to some of the Max Webster stuff and it's like a poor man's Frank Zappa with a lot cleaner lyrics. The song writing and guitar playing is tremendous. (great lyrics by Pye I should mention also).....
I have a deep respect for this guy. He had so many good riffs in the '80s & '90s. Most of his songs are solid classics. A true Canadian treasure. Whatever what some folks think 'bout the lyrics or how he looks, it's to me a seriously under-rated artist. If only I had the chance to catch it live somewhere...

One of the best live opening acts I've ever seen..........right behind Pete Way's old band Waysted who opened for Iron Maiden on their Somewhere in Time tour. Mitchell had one heck of a talented band back then. I'd love to see the same lineup again!
I think the lip sync thing was used more on awards shows back in the day but the artists didn't do as much on tour as they do now. I always thought they did on awards show to protect the a little so they didn't sound too crappy.
Most awards artist are radio artist too and as a fan you can pick a shitty performance apart on awards shows but when your in an arena you you rock out more not just sitting there watching from home.
These days the artists probably can't even play it live anyway.
that O.P.P hat looks so goofy on his balding head. Didn't he get in trouble with possesion of a controlled substance? then made a deal with police to tell everyone that drugs were bad?
The guitars and bass certainly aren't plugged in - even to wireless. The vocals are live though. There's too much improv by Kim Mitchell vs. the album version.
C'mon, it's not that bad geniusofbrutality. "Go For a Soda" is a decent, straight-ahead rock song... and IMHO it's practically a work of musical genius compared to most of the crap that's "all the rage" (i.e. on the charts, promoted by major labels and lapped up by the masses) nowadays.
Hey back off buddy, I never said it was a bad song. Its just kinda funny, well maybe its not but it was at the time I wrote that, my mom told me that everyone loved this song back in the day which is awesome but sorta funny cuz, Kim Mitchell is quite humourous in his own ways.
Oh man... it must suck to have to go on TV and do a fake instrument performance. It's like being a professional musician and being asked to air-drum and air-guitar. Thank GOD the microphones are real and they are actually doing the singing. Oh well... today in 2009 there are multi-MILLION dollar artists who go on awards shows and not only is the music performance faked, but they lip-sync TOO ! Shameful. At least in 1985 they hadn't gotten that low in the industry...yet....
this is one of those songs from the youth that till this day if it comes on i reach for the volume and inexpilcably crank it to ear bleeding levels .......... damn it's good !!!!!!!
You probably have a problem, and I'm guessing you spend a lot of time drinking too, the opposite of the message of this song. Kim Mitchell is a pretentious piece of shit.
I heard this song when I was living in Nashville in the early 80's working in the ER. We all thought it was an anti-drinking and driving song so it became an inside joke when we were treating drunk drivers to say "He/she shoulda gone for a soda". It was years later that I finally heard some Max Webster. Canada sure produces some awesome bands must be something in the water (or beer) Awesome song
How might I get a saved copy of this video? Trying to learn the guitar riff and would like to slow the video down for accuracy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. rtmvideo@yahoo
it doesnt sound that great when he performed it here. everyother video live is pretty good. and kim mitchell is very talented. lets see u write a song.
Why was this guy popular in Canada? I think I'm missing something here. There are lots of talented Canadian musicians but for the life of me, I don't feel this is one of them.
A song about soda and then another about patio lanterns? Are you serious? That's like Spinal Tap stuff. I remember Bryan Adams was popular during this time as well as Neil Young. Those are two great Canadian acts. This guys music is a joke.
Maybe it's my computer (I doubt it) but the audio and video aren't synced which probably makes it look like they're not playing. The guitar solo is different than the album recording. Kim Mitchell is too good of a guitar player to not play live.
You are right... It's play back. I can image that that the band did not had so much of a choice at the time. TV Networks do this... Its too much trouble to do live sound on TV... It can often be terrible to mix...
I am not sure if anyone has noticed it yet, or if it has been mentioned, but they aren't really playing. When Kim stops strumming right at the intro, it still plays. Now some would say that the other guitar player is strumming but he his clapping his hands...
