  • Kim Mitchell - now that's music, great canadian guitar hero!

  • If your gonna use backing tracks you should at least plug the guitars in to make it LOOK like your playing haha...what the hell

  • Canada rocks, no question

  • One of the classics of All time!! Not just saying that because they;re Canadian. Either way!!

  • Beauty song eh ?

  • Why is Kim wearing a hat? What possible reason is he hiding his Canadian Passport?

  • @tamartin64

He can never be the Prime Minister of Canada because he was actually born a poor black child in Hawaii, and he can't produce a legitimate birth certificate.

  • love it, thanks for posting!

  • Nostalgic music, lovely 'discussion' between some of the fellas, am I 22 again?Hanging out @ Contos, (Dort Hwy if you know what you know) w/ the Gearhead Dishwashers from that restaurant we hated working at. Slice of life, nice break from home office detail for a microsec.

  • 6 people didnt want 2 go 4 a soda

  • Just. Pure. Awesome.

  • just heard this song on a boston rock station for the first time..had to turn up the volume high!

  • Kim Mitchell is just too Damn SEXY!!

    There oughta be a LAW!

  • Phenomenal mullet on the rhythm guitar dude.

  • Pete is the best..♥

  • Too bad the guitars weren't plugged in..., but that's TV. They still rock!

  • Did he wear the OPP hat to keep the cops off his tail, er what?

  • He looks like a homeless guy but he can rock and play great guitar.

  • but look at them pants.

  • Kim Mitchell is King of all Canadians.

  • they must feel so silly pretending to play in front of a live audience....clearly his guitar is going nowhere.

  • Geesh! Lotsa Big Hair not movin'...

  • This rhythm section is really dialed in. Super tight, great bass tone.

  • @brockdakota Yeah the rhythm section is dialed in cuz it looks like they're going thru the motions with the backing tracks. Look at the guitars, none are plugged in. However, Kim WAS singing...

  • @brockdakota

Yeah the rhythm section is dialed in cuz it looks like they're going thru the motions with the backing tracks. Look at the guitars, none are plugged in. However, Kim WAS singing and not lip synching...

  • Kim is a genius... listen to some of the Max Webster stuff and it's like a poor man's Frank Zappa with a lot cleaner lyrics. The song writing and guitar playing is tremendous. (great lyrics by Pye I should mention also).....

  • i just met this guy last night

  • I have a deep respect for this guy. He had so many good riffs in the '80s & '90s. Most of his songs are solid classics. A true Canadian treasure. Whatever what some folks think 'bout the lyrics or how he looks, it's to me a seriously under-rated artist. If only I had the chance to catch it live somewhere...

  • He does radio where I live =D

  • Saw these guys live in '85 in Des Moines when they opened for Bryan Adams. They blew the doors off of Adams! One of the best live opening acts I've ever seen..........right behind Pete Way's old band Waysted who opened for Iron Maiden on their Somewhere in Time tour. Mitchell had one heck of a talented band back then. I'd love to see the same lineup again!

  • I saw them on that tour as well in Indy, they kicked ass!!!!!!!!!!.Waysted is a great band, but Pete Way's other band UFO are Gods!!!

  • Was that a good view on it or am I just really baked? hahaha

  • I think the lip sync thing was used more on awards shows back in the day but the artists didn't do as much on tour as they do now. I always thought they did on awards show to protect the a little so they didn't sound too crappy.

Most awards artist are radio artist too and as a fan you can pick a shitty performance apart on awards shows but when your in an arena you you rock out more not just sitting there watching from home.

These days the artists probably can't even play it live anyway.

  • that O.P.P hat looks so goofy on his balding head. Didn't he get in trouble with possesion of a controlled substance? then made a deal with police to tell everyone that drugs were bad?

good song, but not so good of a person!

  • The guitars and bass certainly aren't plugged in - even to wireless. The vocals are live though. There's too much improv by Kim Mitchell vs. the album version.

  • Was this song REALLY all the rage back in the day? Lmfao thats what I'm told :P

  • C'mon, it's not that bad geniusofbrutality. "Go For a Soda" is a decent, straight-ahead rock song... and IMHO it's practically a work of musical genius compared to most of the crap that's "all the rage" (i.e. on the charts, promoted by major labels and lapped up by the masses) nowadays.

  • Hey back off buddy, I never said it was a bad song. Its just kinda funny, well maybe its not but it was at the time I wrote that, my mom told me that everyone loved this song back in the day which is awesome but sorta funny cuz, Kim Mitchell is quite humourous in his own ways.

  • @geniusofbrutality Not where I come from, LOL!

  • Oh man... it must suck to have to go on TV and do a fake instrument performance. It's like being a professional musician and being asked to air-drum and air-guitar. Thank GOD the microphones are real and they are actually doing the singing. Oh well... today in 2009 there are multi-MILLION dollar artists who go on awards shows and not only is the music performance faked, but they lip-sync TOO ! Shameful. At least in 1985 they hadn't gotten that low in the industry...yet....

  • Well actually they did lip sync then too. You can tell when they sound just like the song recorded.

  • hilarious guitar synching

  • it was on radio on 1 0 2 .3 max fm

  • this is one of those songs from the youth that till this day if it comes on i reach for the volume and inexpilcably crank it to ear bleeding levels .......... damn it's good !!!!!!!

  • You probably have a problem, and I'm guessing you spend a lot of time drinking too, the opposite of the message of this song. Kim Mitchell is a pretentious piece of shit.

  • I love this song. Good shit!!! This song takes me back

  • I heard this song when I was living in Nashville in the early 80's working in the ER. We all thought it was an anti-drinking and driving song so it became an inside joke when we were treating drunk drivers to say "He/she shoulda gone for a soda". It was years later that I finally heard some Max Webster. Canada sure produces some awesome bands must be something in the water (or beer) Awesome song

  • As a Canadian, we thank you for that comment :) We have some of the best rock in the world. Just wish the world would listen more!

  • what the fuck is disco duck? - to christschool

  • How might I get a saved copy of this video? Trying to learn the guitar riff and would like to slow the video down for accuracy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. rtmvideo@yahoo

  • Kim is a girls name

  • His real name is actually Joseph. Many musicians use their middle name instead of their first in relation to their music.

  • I used to see this guy at the grocery store in Collingwood all the time.

  • they're playing

they are just a talented band

and you can tell they are singing live for sure

  • it doesnt sound that great when he performed it here. everyother video live is pretty good. and kim mitchell is very talented. lets see u write a song.

  • Why was this guy popular in Canada? I think I'm missing something here. There are lots of talented Canadian musicians but for the life of me, I don't feel this is one of them.

A song about soda and then another about patio lanterns? Are you serious? That's like Spinal Tap stuff. I remember Bryan Adams was popular during this time as well as Neil Young. Those are two great Canadian acts. This guys music is a joke.

  • and thats your opinion and nobody gives a shit.

  • Comment removed

  • might as well go for a soda

  • Or at least the intro to the song...

  • They are definitely not playing at all during this song. Can't quite figure out why they'd do that... even for 1985.

  • Maybe it's my computer (I doubt it) but the audio and video aren't synced which probably makes it look like they're not playing. The guitar solo is different than the album recording. Kim Mitchell is too good of a guitar player to not play live.

  • I can assure you they are not playing.

If they are, then Kim's guitar is magic: It's not plugged in.

  • You are right... It's play back. I can image that that the band did not had so much of a choice at the time. TV Networks do this... Its too much trouble to do live sound on TV... It can often be terrible to mix...

  • Also, the solo is definitely not different then the recordings that I have of this song.

  • I am not sure if anyone has noticed it yet, or if it has been mentioned, but they aren't really playing. When Kim stops strumming right at the intro, it still plays. Now some would say that the other guitar player is strumming but he his clapping his hands...

  • canadian musak is the best! (worldwide) kim mitchell , our lady peace, i mother earth, moist, david usher...etc

  • beautiful

  • Damn his back up singer really can belt it out.

  • That would be Peter Fredette. The guy has one hell of a set of vocal pipes... still!

  • I need the actual video.

  • Just heard Kim will be in Niagara Falls Ontario performing on New Years Eve (Free concert). SWEEET!

  • and rodger hodgson!

  • Kim's right...we might as well!!!!

  • This is a good classic hit and one of my all-time faves//I can get into some live performances as much as anyone so good work on your upload stovetube!-Mikey & faved too!*****

  • This reminds me of visitin and cruisin with my dad when i was growin up, he loves kim mitchell, and it turned me into a fan. Great Rock. 5* * * * *

  • canada has the best music !!!...but unfortunately has the worst housing in all of north america...thanks mafia developers and nazi city hall

  • iz it new lol

  • this is the song i was looking for after watching an american dad episode...lol

  • Cute outfit lol

  • awsome song!

  • peter is the sh!t! best voice. kim mitchell rocks so hard. he came to lloydminster and was unreal, although only like 200 people were there :(

  • Ah, kim mitchell lol. I listen to him on the mighty Q. Q107 w00t lol

  • Saw him live yesterday and he played a great show. It was so good.

  • Anybody who thinks Kim Mitchell is overrated either a) is an idiot or b) knows nothing about guitar.

  • well if ur Canadian dude u call it pop. most people do. i remember "pop shop" pop. refillable bottles kinda like what the beer store does. that was in the 70s. we also call corndogs, "pogos", cigarettes "smokes" and real beer "beer". i asked 4 a pogo in Jersey once and they said "wtf is that?" opps!

  • Yeah man, that happened to me too. The same thing with iced tea, you actually get frozen tea, or sofa and couch. It's all interchangable with some people tho. :)

  • I SAW THEM WITH BOSTON and eddie money was to be their but wasent but it still was awsome

  • this performance by this band kicketh some serious ass

  • if you notice ther guitars arnt even pluged in, i think they wre just singin lol

  • better than these days when NOTHING is plugged in... except the speakers to the soundtrack.

  • I still love this song after all these years

  • This kicks major ass on so many levels.

  • nice message, yes. but kim could be singing about clubbing baby seals and it still would be a great tune.

    thanks for posting!

  • OPP WTF

  • Kim Mitchell is underrated

  • yea, so are Jeff Healy and Colin James, and they're ALL Canadian, sucks eh?

  • Jeff Healy is not underrated. However, if you have a brain.. You can tell that Kim Mitchell has no talent, he writes songs about "Soda" means while in Canada we call it pop...

  • I live in Canada and I have never called it "pop".

  • yeah really i say soda

  • What are you talking about. I grew up calling it pop. Maybe its an Ontario thing ;) We used to go buy cases of Pop from a place called The Pop People :P

  • in canada we also suck ass...

nope... actually thats still just you

  • this man is a god of travers preportions

  • Was that Andrea Martin introducing them?

    That's fantastic.

  • Yes, that's Andrea Martin.

  • You tube the vid for this. It is still great

  • GREAT SONG! Sure brings back precious memories of a more innocent, fun time! Best rock era... 60's thru 80's, without a doubt!

  • where the heck the goood ol vid man??????

  • that's another thing that's better about 80's music compared to today's. we had "party rock"

thanks for posting this, brings back memories of much happier times.

  • ummmmm, who is playing guitar at 00:11??

  • Don't be be fooled by the fact that the video is out of sync with the audio. It's a problem when the video is captured with a '90's era computer....

That said, I think the instruments might be prerecorded and the vocals live.

  • he has on the same outfit in Patio Lanterns lol I LVE YOU KIM MITCHELL!!

  • SAw him when he fronted Max Webster in 77. Opened for Rush in Port Huron Mich.and four more times in and around southern Ont. in the next few weeks. He still rocks!!

  • dam,,,take me back,,,i agree that song has a great vibe,,

  • for all the mullet jokes etc-this song is kick ass, has a good message too

  • won radio tickets in '87 and met him @ the Juno backstage party.

  • The guy in the blue suit playing rhythm guitar has the fuckin' best mullet ever!!

  • Peter Fredette

    he's the man

  • hahaha! the guitars aren't even plugged in! i still love max/kim, though...

    -J

  • i know the basist personally. hes my dads buddy bob wilson :)

  • really? that's weird ... bob wilson is my father :)

  • I know his keyboard player, son of a priest in Peterborough.

  • wow. a strat with humbuckers in the bridge and neck slots... i been lookin for that guitar for ages! finally made my own. wonder where kim got it.

  • its a fat strat, the guy i play with uses one on some things. I think there is a naftacaster version out there on ebay with your name on it.

  • Is it me, or are the the vocals the only 'live' thing about this recording?

  • no u r right this is fake but the singing or they r really on lol

  • Love this song!! Thanx for posting. Yes, I do dig the Canadian rock scene- old school killer tunes like this, plus Mahogany Rush, Rush, Triumph, April Wine, lots of good stuff...

  • Had Paul deLong left the band at this point?

  • No. That's him.

  • Paul deLong had very little hair. It looks like the guy that played drums in this video also posted in this thread...

    pmarangoni (11 months ago)

That's actually Paul Marangoni on drums, not Paul DeLong...

  • Whoa... That is correct. My mistake. I got fooled by the black Gretsch kit... I had seen Mitchell many times around then, and DeLong was with him through that period as far as I know. Paul Marangoni may have sat in with him for a time perhaps...?

I met Paul M. in Toronto in '87. If my memory is correct, he was playing with another Paul... Pasmore with David Gibson.

Paul DeLong was with Kim Mitchell until the Rockland album when he went to LA to work with DeVillers.

  • Matt Frenette was on drums somewhere along the way as well.

  • Yes. After Paul DeLong there were many drummers in the Kim Mitchell Band... Live and Studio.

  • Correct! I did play with Paul Pasmore and David Gibson back in the late 80s. I only played at these Junos with Kim because DeLong was busy playing with someone else out west at the time.

  • Kim Mitchell hosts a toronto radio station: Q107

He plays a lot of Rush :D

  • I watch this and I'm 19 again. Thank You!

  • I watch it, and I'm 14 again. I've seen Bryan Adams 4 times...3 times as an opening act, and once just because Kim Mitchell was his opener. Max Webster, R.I.P.

  • Where's the original video for "Go for a Soda"? I saw it once here on YouTube, but it seems to have disappeared!

  • yeah! WHERE DID IT GO? THE BEST VIDIO I'VE SEEN AND POOF ITSA GONE EH.MAX WEBSTER ALSO MADE A MOVIE "A MILLION VACATIONS".

  • dude you can find that video on Kim's Myspace page

  • Thanks!!

  • Who is that hansome devil?

  • KIM MITCHELL is Canada

  • ya and rush and april wine

  • Trooper rules Canada! But those others are pretty good too.

  • Kim Mitchell possibly the most influential and important musician of the past 200 years.

  • you're kidding right? please?

  • lol cool

  • Kim Mitchell is the man.

  • That's actually Paul Marangoni on drums, not Paul DeLong...

  • thanks for this!!!
