@Dano9613 You are supposed to hit down on the ball with all your irons. That is what creates the distance and how the ball gets in the air. Trying to "scoop" the ball actually brings the bottom edge of the club up and actually causes you to hit a shot that is very low and runs across the ground only. Try it. Take your club and lean the face backwards and watch the bottom edge come up. Even put a ball there to see how it will strike the ball.
JOE...great tip/inspiration!! ARNIE,JACK and GARY also have inspired many SENIORS;perhaps you can inspire your BOOMER friends in VISION awareness...AMD(macular degeneration). AMD has now surpassed Prostate cancer in statistics(Novartis.com). A silent anomaly, AMD needs your HELP Joe in awareness!!!
in this whole tee vs no tee debate. try the way some lpga tour players do it. hit your slub into the gorund and twist making a little hill then put the ball on top. its like the best of both worlds :P
@xvirg It is not so much keeping your head down (that phrase confuses new golfers) it is about keeping your head still through impact so that the distance from your head to the ball doesn't change until after the ball has been struck.
it would be absolutely stupid to not use a tee...it doesn't make any sense. the tee, even with irons is great because it's like having a lie that's beyond perfect.
I'm just thinking (and I'm not arguing!!), dont you get a little more spin without a tee? Like you can trap the ball against the turf a little more, squeezing it, kinda tiddlywink style. With that in mind I dont usually use a tee on 8, 9 or wedges...
But I have to say going back to the original comment, I grabbet Angel Cabrera's tee after he played a par three at the European Open this year - so pro's definatly DO use em!
you went from tees to hybrids 2 completely different categories. Bottom line is use a Tee whenever you can and you are very wrong if you think pros don't use tees on par 3's. It may appear as if they don't, do to the low set of the tee but it is still there.
thts wht i do or used to but its whteva u feel comfortable with but try teeing it off cuz it will get u more of a chance to get it off the ground and up in the air.

using a tee shouldnt make it look like the ball is off the ground. it should look like a really good lie (usually on the tips of the grass.
that way you wont want to scoop it.
its also a mental thing

i know what you mean. I do that all the time even on some par 5 ill do it with my driver just to keep it low. its very effective.

wow...someone on youtube who didn't reply to my comment with name calling and stupid insults...thanks for that, seriously.
but i agree with you...with no tee, the trajectory is going to come out a little lower with more spin on the ball.
with a tee, it encourages a shallower swing plane, so it's going to come out higher, with a little less spin, with less distance. (USUALLY)
by my own experience and being a tournaments, i have always used a tee and i have never seen a pro not use a tee.
EverythingEvil007 2 years ago
i like to trap the ball with my short irons my self. using a tee makes me scoop the ball.
