Before Thatcher, there were no mining profits; there were only losses, and the miners received a taxpayer subsidy of £16,000 annually. It is only after Thatcher closed the loss-making mines that we may speak of profits.
Mining is a dangerous profession. Miners risk black lung, cave ins, and so on. It does not ennoble the human soul. Therefore, the loss of mining jobs sees like a positive point.
