I like this pass but I prefer getting an underhook on the far side and putting pressure on the chin with my far shoulder with my head on the near side of their head touching the ground. While doing this I like to control the near side arm. I feel that is much more secure than the pass in this video but each to their own
I hear you, that's how I do it (and how Marcelo shows it) with the gi. No gi he prefers to use the crossface and keep his head on the far side. I've been continuing to develop this pass since this video was shot; I don't always get as high as I show here, though I still do on occasion. I also like to try to get my upper body more perpendicular to my opponent's, and I try to use my free leg to kill his near arm before I press on his thigh if he is bugging me with it.
Thanks for showing this awesome technique. I use it in class all the time, works great. But, yesterday in comp I tried it as usual and found myself put back in full guard. Was very odd since it never happened in training. Did I stay too low or what_
Hard to say without seeing it, but maybe your opponent was able to get his bottom knee back up inside your hips, then went to full guard? Aside from re-sprawling to the side with your hips, you can block his knee with your hand, your foot, or the back of your own hamstring. The hamstring is the one I have to remind myself to use on occasion if the guy is fighting hard, keeping me low, and threatening to replace guard that way.
This one is tough to defeat once your head is locked to the side and the top man has turned your legs to the side. Like many things in jiu-jitsu, preventing him from getting you into this posture is much easier than escaping it once you're there. Without the gi, sometimes guys are able to give me trouble with their near side hand messing with my legs as I try to get my foot on their thigh.

I want to feel this from the bottom, I think it is difficult to stop this pass with one move.
Upper body is pressed, so I would use my legs to bother his leg, I think I could get butterfly or something, but takes a lot of work.
