I've got to say, in art school, we were taught how to write this way so that the name and other written information would be legible if the work was photographed and reduced in size. They ALWAYS stressed using the horizontal rule and triangle whenever possible, to avoid lapsing back into our individual handwriting - and thus making the writing illegible. Also, knowing many architects, I have to say they have always used guides - and I don't know any who freehand their letters. :/

LOL I thought this video was great. It's nice to know that you still addressed the angry email with humor and class.

When I was learning this type of lettering in high school, I actually preferred not to use a triangle for my lettering. My lettering was not perfect, but it was clean, had expression and dynamic lines. But my teacher insisted that I use the triangle (probably because he was afraid of the lettering police). @_@

in my first year i used templates, but my teachers indirectly told me that they hate templates. i switched to handwriting but mine is horrible. then i got the idea to do calligraphy. it is very neat looking, it's easy to do, and even if you might not do all the letters straight people wouldn't notice. at first i used imperial capitals with some gothic script ending with italian and humanist scripts. In the end I developed my own calligraphy style and I'm really comfortable with it

You have awesome technique about using triangle in writing, very neat and professional! I love it and I learn from it. Its important that your architectural lettering is neat and organized, so if a triangle helps you achieve that, then hell yea I'm going to use a triangle.. we all have to find a way of lettering that fells natural to us without it being a headache, so if you can letter without using a triangle good for you. First and fore most I would like to thank you so much for your instructional video. I always wrote in block for years and decided to polish it with architect writing. Im not sure why that guy got so upset for. I have friends who are architects and have learned in different ways, with and without the triangle. I always find it helpful to learn with the triangle at first unit I get it nice looking. I personally dont plan on using it all the time. Thanks again :)
