I've watched a ton of Purple and Rainbow vids. It just seems to me that Blackmore is happiest, and plays at his best, when JLT is singing. JLT is the only singer that Blacky still talks to.
@drewchasia Well, presumably, Blackmore still talks to his wife, Candice :). But, your point is well-taken and I agree with your observation that Blackmore seems happy (and therefore, plays great) playing with JLT. Too bad it doesn't make him happy enough to get back with JLT!
Not bad album - to me -, Ritchie is fine, and He is the essence. Of course the "interestly moving" Turner is not Gillan - unfortunately - but only listening the music I can,t see him - fortunately.
Grande Joe Lynn Turner. Un groso, otro de los arquitectos del Hard Rock. Un gran cantante con un estilo impresionante. Slaves & Masters fue un gran disco. Deep Purple ya no es nada desde que Blackmore se fue.
JLT is hardly a master. He's a great commercial love-rock vocalist. Not a great hardrock vocalist. Gillan is the man, no doubt. Coverdale comes in as #2.
I agree, it's their worst album. I can't believe Ritchie said it was the best reunion era album he participated on. 'Perfect Strangers' and 'The House Of Blue Light' are superior. Not because of Gillan singing, but because the lyrics, music and atmosphere is not about love, love and more love, like JLT ONLY sings about. Heartache, love, broken hearts etc.
turner is a fucking metal god listen his last works in brazen abbot he has a better voice than ever.gillan is going down should retire.turner is the best singer of rainbow..
the best singer of purple is no doubt glenn hughes.period!!!
Oh, I wouldn't dream of doing that, Gillan is much better, it's just most people can't get their heads around the concept of DP without Gillan, and whine about Glenn Hughes, Coverdale, and JLT all the time. Not Rod Evans though, strangely...
NO GILAN WAH-WAH SOB CUZ GILAN IS THE ONLY THING WHICH MAKES DEEP PURPLE SOUND LIKE DEEP PURPLE BOO HOO WAH SELF HARM etc. Speaking of Gillan, isn't 3:47 the song "New Orleans" by Gillan? Great song anyway... the first few tracks of Slaves and Masters are killer, the last half is a bit of a let down in my opinion though.
@simonsblackmore I love deep purple without Gillan...Coverdale and Hughes...less with joe lynn turner...but this song is great, their perfomance amazing and S&M is a good album...can't be other way with deep purple...
@simonsblackmore I can stand Purple without Gillan....Evans was great in his own way...Coverdale & Hughes....brilliant. Turner is just Ritchie's "yes-man". Turner talked a lot of crap about Gillan in interviews during the time he was in Purple, that's why the hardcore Purple-camp lost all respect for him. He's a good singer...sometimes. His stint in Purple, he had voice problems. His days in Rainbow...great....Malmsteen....brilliant. Over The Rainbow round these days, still good...
@simonsblackmore Maybe so, but I don't understand how those individuals "can stand" DP without Blackmore. To me, it's not DP without Blackmore. I like Slaves & Masters, too.
i dont care what people say about this version of deep purple.i like it.then again i like rainbow more then i could ever like deep purple.both great bands, and rainbow truly never got enough respect
AGREED - Slaves and Masters is an AWESOME record, and there are some Purple songs where I actually prefer Joe Lynn Turner's vocals over those of Ian Gillan. This was a terrific Deep Purple lineup, and I absolutely cannot understand why S&M is largely overlooked by some hardcore Deep Purple fans. This is NOT a Rainbow album - it is a Deep Purple record (although is contains 3/5 of latter-day Rainbow, it still has 3/5 of the original Deep Purple as well as 4/5 of the classic Mark II lineup).
grozzda, this is still DP, just a commercial sounding version the same way Rainbow sounded commercial with Joe, but this still sounds more like Purp than Rainbow like some claim. The singer alone doesn't make the identity of a band. I agree also that though Joe's voice is good it's not on a par with either Gillan, Coverdale, or Dio.
Ths album was good but I have to agree that Ian Gillan was alot better. And it's pretty ironic, the first time Blackmore left was because he wanted to ply hard rock. But his next band, Rainbow was far from hard rock. And then, in 1995 he left the band for music that's the complete opposite of hard rock.
I think you are wrong in saying that Rainbow wasn´t hard rock. It was, especially in their first records with Dio. But you have a point in what you say about Ritchie Blackmore´s contradictory behaviour. Moreover, I have read an 1984 interview with Blackmore where he said that at the end he was frustrated with Rainbow becouse he wanted to do hard rock again and J. L. Turner wasn´t a rock singer. But later on he called him to replace Gillan in Deep Purple!
Turner was one of the best vocalists at that time...and also one of the most underevaluated....see him with Malmsteen, without him Yngwie could only sell his album to his mother and wife.
Great album, saw them on rhe tour, brilliant. Purple are my fav band but it has turned into the waltons, all nicey nicey, no edge. bannas was crap, abondon rubbish. People have just got a problem with JLT, even though he is a great singer. No way out of his depth.
S & M got some bad reviews, but it one of the better DP albums. It may not sound like DP, but it is still a good album. The only song I don't like on S & M is "Love Conquers All".
Deeperpurple1952 you can suck my big one SLAVES AND MASTERS IS THE BEST DEEP PURPLE COVER AND BETTER THEN ANY ONE OF THERE OTHER ALBUMS THIS LINE UP WAS BY FAR THE BEST!
i saw this tour i was 4th row center. I must say, best concert that i have ever been. they finaly sounded so powerfull and complete, too bad it didn't last.

OOOOOOOOOO MYYYYYYYYYYY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDD
are you crazy people? are you deafen? how can you compare JLT - B, C or D grade vcalist to the GOD OF ROCK VOCALISTS - IAN GILLAN...
be objective people, THERE ARE NO OTHER VOCALISTS IN THE WORLD WHO CAN DO WHAT GILLAN DID IN THE 70'S, 80'S AND 90'S....
Ian Gillan even NOW has the greater voice than JLT, listen to LIVE IN ANAHEIM 2006...
Don't even compare JLT to the maestro IG
