To All ~ This IS my favorite Janis Joplin recording, with Big Brother & The Holding Company, or otherwise. I was 23 when Janis died, in 1970, at the age of 27. She was always one of my favorites during the late 60's and it IS sad that she died so young. I think, often times, with money in your pockets you find a way to pass away, but IMHO, it's tragic, but it's true.
If your old enough to remember ~ it started out just "Big Brother & The Holding Company." Then, after Joplin became a musical "player" it changed to "Big Brother & The Holding Company with Janis Joplin." When she finally made the very big time in 1960's pop music it turned into Janis Joplin & The Holding Company and then, finally, it was just Janis Joplin when she told Big Brother & The Holding Company to GET LOST!
@MrRonnieG Nah Brother Ronnie, I was born in '61. I know of her through research only. The only song I remember being popular of hers was "Mercedes benz" I must have been 7 or 8 then. She was one hot hell of a talent.

I love Janis! At the same time, she was a role model 4 many bad white girl blues shouters w NO voice of ANY kind. JJ kept her raw, whiskey-voice in check more than most of her accolytes seem 2 realize b/c Big Mama Thornton she was not. Not taking away from her genius but unless u HAVE either genius or a voice, modelling yourself after someone who had the latter risks getting yer ass booed off the stage! JJ could've cut it at Showtime at the Apollo, I think, tho not many of her imitators
@dantean I enjoy music and try to avoid sweeping moral judgements about the artists who create it. Thanks for your thoughtful comment my friend. I am glad you listened. As you so faithfully noted, the blues should be sung and not shouted by anyone, male or female.
@Circumpunk Thanks. I'm glad you enjoy music. Though, there's not much of a sweeping statement in saying JJ had/has a lot of bad imitators. Go to a blues club some night in any city in America. Plus, blues shouters are a great contribution to the genre: Janis, Big Joe Turner, Big Mama Thornton, plus dozens of others I could name. Good luck.

Put ur mind at ease: it's not implicit in what I wrote that all white women are singers, that all who ARE are JJ imitators, or that all those that are both these things are by definition bad--only that, as my mom--a white woman--will tell u, only white folks will politely tolerate god-awful singing when they hear it, saying, "well, she's trying." Not black folk. Black folk will think "try on ur time honey," and boo...louldy!
