  • Whats ur company and avg cost to paint a guitar? I cant find any place near me to do,it and I tried but came out uneven.

  • how much?

  • @HowTosReviewsunboxns probably around $250.00....the materials for a job like this is pretty expensive....

  • can you do my fender telecaster

  • what if you put plutonium flakes in it to glow?

  • @rynoreaper123 you have any plutonium handy??

  • are you supposed to pain the neck pocket and the string ferrule holes?

  • @smp156 i've answered this question a few times before...but,as i said in the video i masked off the neck pocket (i do that on any guitar i paint) to keep from getting paint buildup....on the string ferrules i put masking tape down inside the holes(it's hard to mask them off neatly without a danger of pulling off some of the finish),and before i put the guitar back together i take a sharp razorblade or exacto knife and carefully scrape off any paint that got on the flat edge of the ferrules...

  • i am going to paint my flying v purple with gold flakes

  • @ordinaryproductions1 cool !! would love to see it when it's done....good luck with it !!

  • Thanks for that it looks really good

  • @Drevilbreakfast thanks !!

  • I want you to paint my guitar! :P

  • @LittleLautner hey,thanks....if you can get it to me i can paint it..

  • Do you think you could use subtitles for the product names please? It's tough to hear exactly what you are using, especially with the background music and low volume. Thanks.

  • @burmanmusic hey, sorry about that...i'm still learning the video process...i think i will leave out the music on my "how to" type stuff from now on....i will try to go back and add some titles over the video....when i did this i didn't know there would be this many people interested in it....i need to do another guitar and an updated video....thanks..

  • @djdonnie68 No worries! It's still really informative, and the guitar looks killer. At least I can tell that this IS doable :) Thanks!

  • What size needle and cap did you use to get that metal flake out of your gun?

  • @Filmpest it was a 1.8 .....

  • Flipping outstanding job....I want one of mine done. Are u for hire? Or are ur skills and materials pretty standard for auto finishers? I reckon ur accent means we aren't neighbors :-)

  • @gr81dorn Thanks...yes i do paint guitars for other people...i'm sure most any decent auto painter could do it for you,as long as they have some experience with the flake....i don't know where you are located but i'm in tennessee....

  • Thanks for taking the time to explain how to do it correctly. Non-car paint guys need to see the durability of an durable finish versus the rattle can route. The guitar now has the same durability as a show car. I want to do my strat in light green metal flake, like Dick Dale's. Have you tried the House of Kolor Shimrin 2 FX Metaljuls Series? It's suppose to eliminate the time consuming clear coats.

  • @olpaul1 hey, thanks for the comment...i haven't tried the metaljuls but i have read about it....i would like to try it and compare the results with the traditional flakes....it sounds like it would be a lot less labor intensive....

  • not a fan of the color but it still looks nice

  • damn man, you're by far the best guitar paintjob dude out there. i would give my most precious guitar being worth 500.000 dollars and you would still make it even cooler! you're awesome man!

  • @Boefkick Hey, thanks for the compliments !! i appreciate it....

  • @djdonnie68 or what would make more sense: i'd give you a 5 bucks cheap ass guitar and you'd make it look like a 500.000dollar one! haha i'm not lying man, you're kick ass!

  • @bryansouza that's kinda hard to answer without knowing more details....such as what type of material was used,is it laquer or polyurathane? Is it automotive paint or something used on funiture? It might be just a matter of scuffing and re-clearcoating or it may have to be stripped down and start over.....If it has to be stripped you are gonna need at least some type of sander and different grits of sandpaper...

  • That is one really nice looking guitar man well done.

  • @Bluebuthappy182 Thank You !!!

  • hi i am looking to do a tele in silver flake would like to use biggest flake posible also guitar body might have binding that i would not want to cover up and looking for some one to do the job if you are taking on more guitars let me know and cost please thanks chris

  • @Robin8207 as far as price probably around $300.00...the materials for this type job is pretty expensive....i'm not sure if i could mask off the binding or not, because the coats fo flake are gonna be pretty thick....

  • Awesome video, great work. The guitar looks incredible! You should have your own TV show, you seem like such a nice, laid back Southern gentleman. Thanks for posting this vid, you did a great job of keeping it very informative. Your work looks so good! And could you please tell me the name of the song playing in the background?

  • @ozweepay hey, thanks for the compliments......the name of the song is "caroline" by medicine mann.......

  • hi dj how much would a spay job like that on a guitar cost .

    regards davey

  • @daveyspider i would say around $200.00 to $300.00.....depending on who did it and how much their labor is....the material is quite expensive.......

  • this was an awesome video! just wondering, say im trying to paint something exactly like this but really small scale, do they make sprayers for little projects? if not, how much would i be looking to spend on a sprayer like this?

    thanks

  • @IHAVEAGECKO hey,you can buy smaller spray guns for touch up work and such...but i doubt you would be able to spray the flake through it,because its pretty coarse....the gun i spray the flake through is a cheaper devilbiss starting line ,they're about $200.00.....the rest i use my sata jet rp guns for....they are around $500.00 to $600.00 each, one for basecoat and a seperate one for clearcoat....but, i own an autobody repair shop and i use this equipment for more than just painting guitars...

  • Great vid -- thanks very much.

Could you explain what you mean by "colour sand" - you mention this as a final step with buffing. Or maybe I misheard...

I'm doing an orange job right now and your advise has helped enormously!

    rock on! right on!

  • @bilbaggins1 color sanding is the process where you take really fine grit sandpaper (1500 to 3000 grit- in steps) to remove any imperfections in the clearcoat...such as orangepeel (texture) or dust that may have landed before it dried...then you take a buffer and coumpound to remove the superfine scratches left from the sandpaper..then glaze it to remove any swirl marks...it makes your clearcoat smooth as glass and gives you a great finished product....hope this helps....

  • cool. i wish i had those tools too.

  • @MrRaindrop16 thanks

  • I just painted my drums yesterday with orange flake. After sanding your first three coats of clear and re-clear, how long did you let it cure before final sanding and buffing?

  • @dieselgeoff7877 hey, i would let it cure for at least a couple of days....

  • what an amazing job! I think this is certainly the best I have seen on Youtube. I was wondering if could let me know what spray guns are you using to spray your different coats. I saw that your span of spray was really large and that you got more area covered. I have never tried that. Thanks anyway for sharing. This is as good as it gets. Loved every bit of it.. Your suggestions and recommendations would be of great help to a novice like me. Thanks

  • @naminnooman hey thanks, the gun i use for the flake is a cheaper devilbiss starting line gun...the flake is hard to clean out so i don't want to contaminate my good guns and have a piece of flake come out in a paint job...for everything else i use my sata hvlp guns.....as far as the spray pattern,i own a bodyshop and i normally paint vehicles so i'm used to the wider fan....i've been doing it the same way so long i probably couldn't change now....

  • @djdonnie68 Thanks friend. Awesome, It must be just great to look at it after all the hard work. Keep up the good work.

  • wow ...it looks great....i don't think even fender would do a job like that...i have only one question....how much did the ingredients cost , paint , clear, sparkle and so on?....

  • @besamemucho5 hey thanks, the orange flake is about $35.00 a jar...as far as the other materials paint,clear,etc.....since i own a bodyshop i keep that stuff on hand,so i just use it as needed without having to go and by a whole quart or gallon (however it's packaged) just to do one guitar.....but to answer your question i would say total material cost for this guitar was around $100.00 to $125.00.....

  • I'm wanting to add flake to my drums. What size flake did you use here? Beautiful job by the way!

  • @dieselgeoff7877 THANKS !! the flake that i used here was house of kolor F18 orange....they have 3 sizes the F is 1/64 inch which is the most coarse...they also have MF mini flake, and UMF ultra mini flake.....what i used gives the best sparkle(in my opinion) but also requires the most topcoats to smooth out the texture....sem makes a flake thats cheaper but you are limited to only about 5 colors to choose from....

  • Nice job man. Someone did a sparkle job on my '60 P Bass sometime in the 80's. I wish it was more of an original colour but that said, it still looks good. It's also checked worn, chip and yellowed of the years which has added character.

  • @JacqueRamon thanks,your bass sounds very cool !!

  • so that's the way to do it!!!! thumbs up! :)

  • @aNdYmAtTeR thanks !!

  • Hey man, thanks for sharing. Question, did you tape off the neck pocket? Also, it looked like the string ferrules were painted on the back too, did he want those painted too?

  • @scopaz no problem, yes i always tape off the neck pocket when i paint a guitar ,to keep paint from building up inside there....and on this type guitar (string through body) it's hard to remove the ferrules without damage ,so i just put masking tape down in the holes as best i can,and scrape of the rest later with a razor blade.......

  • Damn, that looks REALLY cool. What's the quantity of flakes? 200gr?

  • @12313123141231512316 hey,thanks... the flakes come in a 6oz jar......i usually put about 3oz in a mixed quart of dbc 500.......1/2 dbc 500 1/2 reducer.......hope this helps......

  • WHY DOES HE TALK IN CAPS LOCK??

  • @JacksonRR3BFMV why does the way i type seem to bother everyone so much???this video is about painting a guitar........not typing!!

  • This is so damn manly.

  • can i buy that paint allready mixed in a pait can ?

  • @david8837 SORRY, BUT NO.....THE FLAKE COMES AS YOU SEE IN A JAR AND HAS TO BE MIXED AS NEEDED....

  • @djdonnie68 ahhh men i dont have one of those painting machines but that guitar you painted looks way to awsome great art

  • @david8837 THANKS...

  • what materials do you use?

  • @thealbertomz I USED HOUSE OF KOLOR FLAKE,AND PPG CLEARCOAT.....

  • Wow you really know your stuff. My friend painted a guitar of mine with a rainbow pearl which is very cool as well but you have so many coats of clear it far surpasses my guitar in fact its more like a Gibson paint job! amazing!

  • @Soldano88 THANK YOU VERY MUCH.......

  • that is freakin beautiful, nice job

  • @Tris67 THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE KIND WORDS !!!!!

  • Stunning.

  • @hotandspicy666 Thank You !!!!

  • That is SWEET!!!

  • @sminchk67 hey,thanks a lot for the comment........i appreciate it !!!!!

  • @djdonnie68 No thank you, Sir. For taking the time to respond and to clarify what you used as I am doing up a cheap guitar for metal/heavy sound(s) so this is good news for me. Though sadly this is my first ever project and I live in an apartment so I've been using spraypaint for this first experiiment. I am taking my time between coats and sanding and refining and so far I'm quite pleased with the results. Cheers.

  • Hi Donnnie, Thanks for your great videos, you've inspired me and taught some neat tips, so thank you from Australia. I have one question though, on that orange 7 string, you did about 3-4 coats of paint and then about three of lacquer, how does paint etc affect the tone of the instrument?

  • @MrSilo72 hey,i'm glad the videos were helpful to you.to answer your question, just to clarify, the clearcoat was urathane based not laquer .the urathane is even thicker than laquer.but i understand your question.it is true that a thinner finish does let certain woods breathe better, giving a richer tone.especially if you are wanting a cleaner more vintage tone..this guitar is not a super expensive model and is mostly used to play heavier more distorted stuff,so it really wasnt an issue, thanks

  • wow. really clean. very informative... thank you.

  • @JacobCain86 hey,thanks for the comment........

  • What is that little spray thing called? where can i get one?

  • Awesome job, thanks alot for taking the time to make this video :)

  • @StevieVaibanez hey ,thanks for the comment......glad to do it.....

  • Please, what kind of flake is it, is it glitter?

  • @afiadordelima hey,it's not glitter.....as i said in the video it is house of kolor ,orange flake.....it's an automotive product.....

  • nice job

  • @TheHellboyrobb hey ,thanks !!!!!!

  • yeah!!! nice!!!!!!, your use automotive lacquer for guitar? not use polyurethane?

  • @cibertito90 thanks....the paint is not laquer....it is urathane automotive paint......

  • that is one damn good paint job. this inspires me to buy a standard fender tele and get a really cool flake job on it .I actually have a standard hss strat that I bought that has this EXACT paint job and I love it.custom paint jobs here I come !!! ooooh ooooOOOOOO YESSSS that felt gooood

  • @ShuffleDreamProject hey, thanks for the comment....glad the videos gave you some inspiration....let's see your project when you are done......

  • @djdonnie68 can you just spray it over the 'normal' stock color? 0.o

  • @xLiquidxGuitarx hey, yes.you can spray the flake over whatever color is on your guitar......however keep in mind that the flake is not going to cover completely,so you are going to see a little of the origional color showing through....that is why i normally put down a black base or something that compliments whatever color flake you are using.....you wouldn't want to put orange flake over "say "a green base.....you get the idea.....

  • @djdonnie68 Ahhh! now i get it^^ i have a sunburst painting so it wot be a good idea to put it on directly...

  • Your videos are great man...Thanks for taking the time to make them...I am a guitar player and a painter myself and I am getting ready to flake out one of my guitars too and maybe even the roof of my '53 chevy...Cheers...

  • @nchopper96 hey thanks for your comment....i enjoy making them and hope to do more in the future....good luck with your projects !!!

  • Hey, one question: How much would a paint job like this cost me at a shop? Thanks

  • @guitarkid413 hey, i can only speak for myself ,but if i did one i would probably charge around 200.00 to 250.00.....the materials are pretty expensive and as you can tell by the video there is quite a bit of labor involved.......

  • what model of gun do you use? what tip set? what pressure do you keep your compressor at? It's a lot of questions I know...

I work in wood finishing, but all my sprayers are airless ones.

  • @TheAlsyourpal hey, for the flake i use a cheaper devilbiss gun with a 1.8 tip......air pressure varys depending on the size of the flake.....you will ruin a good gun with the flake cause it's hard to clean out.....for all my other painting i use sata guns.....for clearcoat i use a 1.4 tip....air pressure is 30 psi at the gun....hope this helps

  • Wow man, thanks! My friends dad owns and autobody shop and he said I can use his equipment. Cool!

  • @guitarkid413 good luck with your project.....

  • wow !! this is awesome !congrats !!! i´ve been struggling with the painting of the neck of my guitar..some guy did an awful job... he did it .....kinda cool job with the color, but the clear ...omg !!! if u could see it , i bet you´ll cry hahahah ..i had to ripped off all that clear an re paint da neck ................thank god i ´ve found this guy ,who is a violine maker, so he did a great job .. but you are great ....!!!keep rocking !! cheers from san diego !!!

  • Hey Man I Really do admire you for this video i really would love to do this to one of my guitars either in a blue, purple or a green flake ive watched this video over and over and it sorta makes sense, how did u get so good at painting guitars! did u take some sort of special course for it???

  • @Gaza880 hey thanks for the comment......i didn't take a course or anything....i own an autobody shop and i love guitars.....i figured if i could paint cars then i should be able to do a guitar and it just kinda grew from there......you never no what you can do until you try !!!!

  • Hey bro, would you consider painting mine if i shipped it to you and paid???? Just message me privatly and we wil ltalk??!

  • you do a really really good job, im from peru and i have the idea across my mind to paint my guitar, like a "do it yourself" work. so, the firts step is the base right? can i buy the paint ready to apply, what kind of paint do you use? i want a lake placid blue for my guitar. and well how many hands of paint did the guitar take, how many hands of paint are requiere to cover the base.and ast how do you get that shine, the clear coat on the guitar?... well ill be hopping your answer man :) thanks

  • hey, thats kinda hard to answer in a small space..... i use ppg automotive paints....the flakes are house of kolor brand.....usually at least 3 coats of basecoat and 2 to 3 coats of clearcoat.....and yes the clearcoat gives it the shine......if you will watch some of my other videos it should help explain this stuff a little better...hope this helps...

  • hey ,thanks for the comment.....lets see it when you are finished....

  • Awesome work! Love the Roadrunner guitar. I saw one vid and had to watch em' all. My Brother -in- Law has a body shop and that's where I paint my guitars. It's real handy. My next one is gonna be House of Kolor Kandy Tangerine. Keep postin'!
