  • i play this it's not hard it's fun

  • ur trumpet sound a bit flat..

  • im starting on the trumpet but im woundering if it is hard... is it a hard insterment??

  • i have the same valve casing

  • I bought a trumpet just yesterday and I got a question: why do you move the tube with your left hand in specific parts?

  • @JoaoJesusHere i have the same question.

  • Hahahaha! You Said, "And Please Feel Free To Come Bach!" Hahaha! You Know Like Bach the Brand? Ha! AnyWay's Thank's So Much for your Video's! They Really Help! =)

  • @NiukonskaSioux did I say that?!

  • Yes Matt. Thanks - I'll follow your advice.

  • That's good advice ... nobody showed us that in Australia in the 60's!

BTW I really like what you said about making sure it sounds nice. That's why I'm doing it.

    THANKS!

  • @johnfuller108 You're welcome John - just be deliberate, patient and consistent. Take your time because it takes time to develop good skills on the trumpet!

    Good luck!

  • Mark - I've just taken up the trumpet again [after playing it a while at school 40ish yrs ago]. The inside of my mouth above my lips is getting rubbed raw from my teeth. I tried to find a diagram on the net to show the best pos for the teeth.

Would you say about 5mm from the lips' opening is optimum??

    Thanks.

    John of Skelmersdale, Lancs

  • @johnfuller108 If you're cutting into your lip, you're definitely using too much pressure - you should be able to buzz a straight note on the mouthpiece with just enough pressure to seal the air. If you can't do this, then practice doing it before you put the mouthpiece into the trumpet.

    Good luck,

    Matt

  • damn, i never thought playing trumpet is so difficult =|

  • @munixy no, but you need to if you want to play in bands and orchestras where eveyrone else is.

  • Ok I am 22 I will order a trumpet next week I can´t wait till I get it the trumpet I want to buy costs 90 euro´s, do you think thats enough if you want i send you a link with the picture of it too :) please holla back :D

  • @behinddacurtain If you've not already bought it, send me the link.

  • great, I just decided to give it a try (playing the trumpet that is). Just blowing on the mouthpiece seems like a good way to start. Thanks, any more tips?

  • u sound and look high man

  • @joshsalas12 thanks man

  • @amigomatt

there is nothing better to stage fright than Mari jane

    (sarcasm)

good video iam starting too it helps

  • @amigomatt

for now iam holding pencil in my mouth and make noise like crazy man...i like it

  • Thank you so much. My scales are smother and my confidence is higher!

  • Matt,

I got a pocket horn to learn on and this warmup is a great place to start! I'll practice daily. You start in Bb (C) and descend the pattern chromatically 6 times down to E (F). Could you post the same warmup in the remaining 5 keys? Thanks.

  • hey i just started playing literally yesterday. lol. so one should be able to to play the same melody with the mouthpiece as you play with the fingers, or were you just playing the mouthpiece for show? you make it look easy my friend, help me

  • These warm-up are definitely not aimed at the beginning player. It will take time before you have the muscle control to play the mouthpiece like this.

Keep practising and thanks for watching!

  • yes i will! im learning fast now able to play a major scale smoothe. now im practicing just with the mouthpiece thinking it will help. keep making videos and in a month or two i might be ready to give it a shot. THANKS!

  • I play the t-pet and i have a good horn but i was lookin at yours and was wondering how much was it? my teacher wants me to play on something like this

  • Very handsome trumpet, Matt. What brand/model?

  • Thanks for your comment! It's a Kanstul 1500A Signature Series with a bronze bell.

  • Sweet! I live a 1/2 hour drive from the Kanstul factory/showroom and tried out a bunch of their Bb trumpet - incredible line. I don't think I tried the 1500A - I would've remembered THAT! But, my favorite of the ones I tried were the "X" model, 1537P, and 1600 (WB). I'll have to try the 1500A next time. Beautifully rich and dark tone! Great pic. Thanks, Matt.

  • Less talk; more Clarke studies.

  • Yes, that's fine for the more experienced viewers, but would be a pointless video, don't you think?

  • I am of the opinion that must be played before with the mouthpiece holder and then with the strument!!!

  • I am 15, and yet I still can't play a nice clear high C. it would be nice if you could give me any tips on how to reach it easier. Thank you!

  • Maybe you know this already, but you could try raising your tounge when you go higher:) Hope this helps:)

  • The most important thing is to use enough air. I am a senior in high school and my range is up to a double G solid. You must use a lot of air! Also the high register tends to be sharp so once you can nail the note try to lip it down in tune. Use a tuner

  • Hey "illnoise1477", I think you've got your priorities backwards. Too much emphasis on tone and high notes when what's really important is playing with FEEL.

Check out my band's new video "In Lieu Of Bessie" if you want to hear how the trumpet is supposed to be played.

  • You sound sweet. God loves trumpet players. Everybody else might burn in hell.

  • Thanks for teaching!

  • Thank you!

  • this is an excellent warm up. thanks for posting!

  • he could play better...

  • its the quality of the video not his playing

  • I dont like this exersice...

  • Don't use it then

  • im 13 and iv been playing the cornet for nearly 7 years i love playing it. i cnt double tounge yet and id like to know if theirs any chance of putting up a video on how to do it. thnx

  • what kind of horn are you playing on? I play on a Bach Strat soloist, with a 3C or E8 marcinkowitz mouth piece.

  • i have no idea what kind of mouthpiece he's using, but he's playing a kanstul 1500A Bb trumpet

  • perfectooooooooo muy bien good

  • if its the d above concert Bb try playing it 1 and 3 if that doesnt help, you will just have to adjust yourself

  • my high d sounds out of tune, do i need to pull my 1st valve slide out???

  • you dont need to do anything, just purse your lips together tightly and blow and if it still sounds weird try putting more air into it.

  • Can u put a video on how to tongue your notes.

  • its just like your saying "tah" at every note

  • it sounds wonderful good joob markand plus it sounds like uplayed for ur whole life!!! cant believe only 20 years

  • very good

  • Very nice warm-up, nice sound, very kind of you to be so generous with your knowledge.

  • hello there nice warmup!!!why do i struggle to play just the mouthpiece on its own???????????? no problem when its on my horn play almost anything !! chrres dude ps nice playing !!!

  • its harder to hear the pitches with just the mouthpiece, what you have to do is buzz your lips on their own. After you get the buzzing down you will find it easier to play with just the mouthpiece. In my case my lips were just so tight I didn't realize it, until i tried buzzing on my own. Try buzzing in the car and just walking around doing normal activites, in my case my mouthpiece alone playing improved vastly, hope this helps you

  • im playing trumpet for about 5years (in my high school... i din notice that the lower note he played have to slide the 3rd valve there? mybe the note rarely play for me?humm.... can sum1 tell me what note he played with the slide on and is there higher notes need to be play like that? -long timer but log time not playing trumpeter-

  • notice that it was played on a C#?... that C# wud sound sharper if he didnt slide down.. to make it sound in tune, he need to slide down. only occur for low C# n D..

  • The trumpet tubing is technically too short when the 123 valve combination's are played - therefore, the note in most cases will be sharp. That's why you extend the slide when playing a 123 valve combination. (this assuming that there is proper breath support, no "pinching" in the mouthpiece and the player has enough ability to play the other notes in tune.)

  • If it won't come out without using brute force, take it to a music shop to have it removed professionally. It won't cost very much and you will avoid having a disaster, like another part of the trumpet giving way with the force - I've seen it happen, it's not nice! Pay to get it removed.

    Good Luck!

  • this is a very great video of a warm up man. however i just want to ask you a question though, im new at trumpet playing and already, the tuning slide of my horn is kinda stuck man i didn't know what happened or what i did wrong but it just got stuck, do you have any tips in loosening it or do i need to buy a new one? thanks in advance man. keep it coming man.

  • It would of sounded better if your water key was empty you can her the water bubbling

  • I'm afraid that was the computer messing up with the captured sound. Sorry 'bout that!

  • Thanks Matt, this is great for a converted trombonist - just starting out with trumpet and it's helping enormously. Your tone and timing are both awesome.

    Will you post any more?

  • Glad you found the videos useful. Yes, I plan to do some more in the very near future.

  • I Know 8 notes b,c,d,e,f,g,a,f sharp

  • Thank you your assistance!

    Marta from Budapest

  • Nice Monette man.

  • It's a Kanstul my friend

  • Kanstul makes some great horns. Thei Monette copy mouthpieces are awesome, and I tried a 1600WB not that long ago and absolutely loved it. However, I just recently ordered a Lawler, so I'm not in the position for a new horn now. Great tips, by the way.

  • Hey.

It Would Be Helpfull If You Tell Us What Scale You Are Going To Do And Notes (I Know YOu Said You Wernt Going To But It Would Make It More Helpfull)!

    Ross.

  • thanks for that

  • uhh hi bought a trumpet today and was wondering

at what point should you use the slide??

at first i didnt think you had to use it

    but this guy is

and also the smaller slide at the back when or should you use that????

    help please

  • the main big slide is for tuning. the small one in the front you push out when you play a low D and C#, and dont worry about the thumb one untill you get better.

  • yea i've been told that when playing D you should hold that slide about half way and when playing C# you should hold it almost all the way. The difference between holding it all the way in and out is about a semitone.

  • That's not true. You hold it out to where it is in tune for you. The C# will be longer though.

  • thanks for correcting me. i really don't know what i'm talking about.

  • its all about dynamical contrast

  • 50 years old wanted to play the trumpet for years bout it 3 yrs ago looked t it for 2 yrs then found a good teacher and my 120£ trumpet went in case n 300 pound trumpet is now used. respect what you doing no matter how old we are well done from nick the novice maybe i learn my jazz and blues very much

  • nice work... my conductor teaches this to us too... wanting us to be a professional player one day!!! thanks bro...

  • why do you shift the third valve sLide?

  • because when you play a d or a note that uses the third valve, except for e flat and a flat you use the third valve slid or the note is majorly out of tune

  • Thanks for putting up these videos

  • bravo, still playing I hope?

  • You have a great sound.

  • is thisa trumpet ora

    hammond?

  • your tone reminds me of one of my former lesson teachers. Nice job.

  • i play french horn and considering to learn a Bb trumet. do you have any suggestions. or just talk me in or out of it

  • Trumpet is a bit different than F horn. it requires less pressure but a tight embouchure.

  • How do you know when you are fully warmed up. When does the warm up ends, and the playing begins?

  • The warm-up should end when you feel limbered up enough to attempt playing anything that you need to play. It varies from person to person.

  • whats this warm up call

  • i remember having some trouble bending notes on an harmonica. I eventually managed to do it, but i think i had that trouble because i can't whistle, maybe my tongue is retarded. Would that affect my playing if i decided to play the trumpet? Does the tongue play any part all when dealing with trumpets?

  • yes!!!

  • Tongue is one of the most important things when playing trumpet...

    first is air^^

  • I,ve only been playing a month and i have taught myself to play amazing grace just now!

  • The chromatic scale is one thing that needs to be practice, just like scales, both major and minor. It gets you familiar with the notes and fingering positions as well as gets you familiar with what scale a music is in and what notes are appropriate for that music.

  • do anyone no how to play chromatic

    i have test on it

  • i just bought a trumpet today and its impossible to blow into it XD

  • you prolly have a weird valve check that out

  • Just check the numbers on the valves on the inside and make sure they are pointing towards the mouthpiece.

  • you cant just blow into it. you have learn to buzz your lips.

  • try mused2222's `how to play trumpet'

  • That one is awesome. It tells you so much. It's all professional and detailed.

  • DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CIRCULAR BREATHING?

    tHAKS FOR THE EXECISES ...

  • EN ASPAñOL PORFAVOR!!!

  • How do u reach double high C on the trumpet cus I can't and its irritating me?

  • I have problems going up there too my friend, but it doesn't irritate me!

  • There is only one answer that I can give you, practice. Try playing the trumpet with adding a higher note, to have a gradual increase. I once reached a double high E but now I'm at a high A again.

  • ya elli's right im 13 and tried to play an F below double G and couldn't so it but i practice at it so just blow as fast as you can, and slurs help a ton

  • a high c is a g and all you have to do is push faster air through (tighten your lips)

  • no its not! tightening the LIPS will only strain the sound and kill the buzz of the lips. With the corners tight, use tongue level to compress the air.

  • I'm not sure if it would make much of a difference, but if you move your emboucher to the top of your mouthpiece it can help. It works for me. I've never had a steady teacher so I don't know if it can screw something up or not.

  • I'd like to see your warm up.

  • oh yeah! and i bet you don't watch the boys either huh!

  • Any advice for left hand positions or is it preference. I play with a classical grip, the ring finger in the third saddle. You play with a pistol grip. Is there any major difference in tone quality or even ease of playing?

  • LOL.. the "fourth valve" u guys are saying, is simply the the "slide" for the third valve. the note will tend to go sharp is we play with first and third valve together. means it will tends to go "higher" in the sense, pushing the slide makes it flatter, and its almost all trumpet players do that, normally only on low D and low C#, cause it includes first and third valve together, pushing the first valve slide also flattens it, but its within the player to adjust

  • well hi can u help me my trunpet is a holton t606r and need to find out how old it is help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank You! Im Always Enjoying It :D Keep On Posting Videos!

  • Good sound. To my mouthpiece it me does not sound so well

  • Nice tone, man, we sound gr8 together... ;P

  • That's the tunning slide.

  • what's the little slidey thing on the bottom?

  • It may seem a silly question, but dont blame me, i'm a guitar player hehe. What kind of trumpet is that? I noticed you were pushing kind of a fourth valve with your left hand. See you on youtube ^_^

  • Hi there. It's a Kanstul 1500A Signature Series with a bronze bell.

That isn't a valve, it's the slide attached to the third valve to keep certain notes in tune that are naturally out of tune on the trumpet.

    Thanks for your comment!

  • Your Warm-up is awesome! Thanks for video! From Argentina.

  • This is very good , thanks man .

  • I Play Bb Trumpet. Been Playing For 6 Years. Im 15 And I've Just Passed My Grade 4 Exam. This Is Really Great!

  • Hey Simnator92, congratulations! Keep it up and always enjoy it!

  • I used to play trumpet in a school band when I was 11 for a year plus. The band coach didn't teach us that much because there were other instruments and marching steps to teach us. all I can play is songs in c major. the lip embouchure isn't much a problem to me.

now im 16. I miss the instrument alot .

think i should consider on taking proper lessons?

will it be hard to learn other than what I know?

  • I you never found playing that hard and you miss it, of course you should start up again. You'll be surprised how quickly you get back into it. Do get a good teacher though. It's not always easy, but if you want to do it, you'll enjoy doing it. There's certainly more for you out there than songs in C Major!!

    Good luck!

  • I started playing trumpet about 2 weeks ago, these videos are way too advanced for me right now, but maybe in a couple of months they'll be useful. :P

I've been trying my best to practice at least a half hour per day. I usually play for about an hour total at school and a half hour at home on weekdays.

I love the instrument though, it's much more fun than sax which I was previously playing in music class.

  • is it hard to play the trumpet?

  • It's certainly not easy. Try it.

  • i would love to i might get my cousins old trumpet!

  • Good Luck!

  • thank you so much sir!

  • can you play anchors aweigh on trumpet?

  • yes, of course!

  • when i get my cousins old trumpet could you show me how to play anchors aweigh?!?!?!?!?!?!? please!

  • Sure! Can you post a video of yourself with the trumpet?

  • no sir, sorry :(

  • I should warn you that it will take you some time before you can play Anchors Aweigh!

  • Is that RED BRASS trumpet?

  • The bell is made of bronze

  • How do you play high ntoes?

  • tighten ur lips

  • You also have to put more air through your trumpet so the sound comes out crisp and not pinched

  • Hey man, like the video, got a question, in your opinion, would you say it is easier to play the trumpet or saxophone?

  • Dude. Saxophone by far.

On basically any woodwind instrument you just press the keys down and the note comes out. You really only have to worry about if you're in tune or not.

Brass instruments are much different. Partials, diaphragm, air, vibration of the lips, embouchure, aperture, mouthpiece size, etc. come into play when you consider brass.

  • I'm just learning how to play the trumpet but I'm an experienced sax player and it is much harder to play the trumpet.

  • Cheers for your feedback, im a beginner sax player, I was wondering how hard is it to play the Baker Street solo and if you know it could you advise on how to play it? Thanks vm.

  • hey i'm in the fifth grade and i also play trumpet but...band teacher always says as u play high notes i aim at a certain spot of the mouth peice.....and u said just push down the valves and let ur lips from naturally....i'm kinda confused on this...also on te airstream got any tips on keepin a straight airstream to buzz?

  • Thanks for the video, amigomatt; very helpful. I just turned 63, have been playing 9 months - after a 44-year lay-off (it's never too late!). I've recently started doing pedal tones (descending: 5,4,3,2,1 of the scale, which another player suggested. Sometimes my lips feel numb after doing these, so I'm wondering if I should stop. Do you have an opinion on this? I assume this warm-up should be done before playing long tones, correct? Best regards.

  • Uh, that's a normal feeling to have your lips tingle / feel "numb" after letting them vibrate at lower frequencies like that.

Pedal tones are wonderful warm-ups, but don't abuse them. You gotta get some basic lip slurs in there too.

  • It's a Kanstul 1500A, looks like with a copper bell.

  • Yes it is, well spotted! It's a bronze bell on this one :-)

  • Hey! Good vid! Just wonderin what horn you are usin? Im off to do a jazz degree and have been after a heavy horn for ages. Any advice?

  • he playin a Conn i think.....i just started playin, i play a Bach, they are pretty good trumpets

  • Hi Matt, It's amazing how we all have our own way of warming up, I've been using one from an old book on cornet playing by Norman W. D'ath I've had it for years I find it a bit long winded but your lip feels powerful after and not fatigued. I do have another when I'm strapped for time, made up for me by Alan Morrison 20 years ago.But I wouldn't use it all the time as I tend to lose endurance.

  • Thanks for posting the video, Matt. I have been amazed by people who are able to play the trumpet. I have had a Conn for over four years, but never really took the time to learn to play. I've always felt it to be a conflict of interest because I'm a singer. I have tried to sell it, but something has always gotten in the way of that. By the way, is Conn A good brand?

    Cheers

  • Hi there. Glad you liked the vid. Conn is a well respected trumpet make. Which model do you have?

Also, you can sing and play the trumpet, just not at the same time ;-)

  • Thanks so very much for your prompt and funny response.

I wish I could do both at once. That'll make me rich!

Mine is a 20B in Bb, I believe. It sounds very nice and clean, even when I attempt to play it.:-)

  • man middle school bands nothing lol i remember thoughs days thoguth i was soo cool lol just keep practicing but i've been told that buzzing is something that should be taken seriously is it really that important? mouth peace buzzing that is

  • My high school band director made us practicing lip buzzing before we got our mouthpieces. Then we were to practice doing sirens (buzzing high and low like an emergency siren) in the mouthpiece before we were given instruments. Lip buzzing helps you build your chops (kind of like doing warm-ups/push-ups for your lips) which is an essential method to begin playing a brass instrument.

  • first of all... lip buzzing causes too much tension(if you can do it with no tension then your good) in replacement you can play on your leadpipe... just take your tuning slide out and play until you get a full relaxed sound

  • yup..buzzing causes 2 much tension 2 me

  • im going in to 7th grade and i need to learn and memorize his honor for marching band, its hard but im practicing. i hope i can get it down

  • Good luck oink.

  • his honor is a bitch. gotta double tongue some of those parts, or tongue really fast. its a beginner piece, but a very challenging one at that!

  • i know, its written like its 4 beats to a measure but its played 2 beats a measure and its really fast... AND I HAVE TO MEMORIZE THE WHOLE THING!

  • yea.. its called cut time

  • i know

  • That's called "cut time". Does it have a C with a line through it for the time signature?

  • you have marching band in 7th grade? man. we only have high school marching band. ours is amazing though im glad to be a part of it
