Further proof that Pat's right and democracy is dead in Europe came this week (not in August when he posted his video) when the French and Germans bullied the Greeks out of their promised referendum. On no account will the people of Europe EVER be allowed a meaningful vote on anything to do with the European super state project.

@48demmie Yeah, but the Greek PM was an idiot and irresponsible to even offer a referendum to the people on an issue 99% of them could not possibly get their heads around. You dont give a vote on complex economics to people who have no knowledge of economics!
That said, I understand peoples issues with Europe and while I support a union, I would also support a restructuring and wide reaching reforms to make the system more democratic, bit more decentralised in some areas.. more transparent etc

@48demmie Well it should on specific things yes.. Most people dont have a clue when it comes to economics, myself included, so why should I or everyone else vote on specific economic decisions.. we shouldnt. We vote in elections on what values and aims we want, and the political class try to fulfil those aims. Direct democracy isnt feasible or good unless EVERYONE is highly informed..unless technology chanes that in future, it will continue to be infeasible and full of complications.

I wouldnt want the UK to be like the Swiss..their GDP is so high because they attract the very richest to the country by having (excessively imo) low tax so millionaires offshore their wealth. The cost of living is ridiculous as well from what i hear. Im much rather trust qualified (not saying politicians lol) than the lay person on specialist issues any day.
Much rather aspire to be like Norway personally.

I'd like to be like Norway too - out of the EU! But the irony is that Norway's not in it because it allowed its people a REFERENDUM (in 1972) and they went against the wishes of their (trusted) politicians and voted not to join the corrupt, bloated, undemocratic bureaucracy that's about to drag Europe down.

@48demmie Ahh good, just wondering is it only because it is out of the EU that makes you want to be like Norway. I like their welfare model etc which seems to do a good job.
To be fair though, we had the same referendum back then and we voted to be in the EU. Its just now the UK has become disenchanted.

@dan90555 Our referendum asked if we should stay in the Common Market as it was then; we've never been asked if we want to be part of the corrupt and undemocratic United States of Europe. I was against it in 1975 and nothing's happened since to make me change my mind - after all, the EU's auditors have refused to sign off its accounts for the last straight 16 years!!! Who'd want to be a part of such a blood sucking racket? A private company would have been shut down long ago.

@48demmie Yeah I know, was just saying Norways referendum was the same as ours. I do agree that really at some point there should be a referendum, not right now as I dont think people make good choices when emotions are high and economic situation is shitty.
We could achieve so much together though, im big on unity, divided we limit what we can do. I have big hopes for the future and Im not sure being divided is the best way about it. But it does need changing dramatically if we stay in...

Dont get me wrong, I may want the UK to become a sort of power house of the EU, but I also want it to become more democratic, more decentralised and to actually be reformed. Theres no point committing more to a corrupt system that wont reform. So I want to be more involved but only if things changed. If they dont want to, then id accept its not right for us. I would never commit us more right now when the structures in place are chaotic and far from ideal.

If our monarchy was restored none of this would be happening right now. We need a good leader who is born into his position not a power seeker elected through a popularity contest. If Americans all understood economics they would have straightened their government out ages ago. It's time to take back responsibility. Knowledge is power. @48demmie thank God there are people out there who actually see that Greeks are being bullied ..our PM (i never voted for him of course ) was bluffing about the referendum although i was happy for a day hoping that it would eventually take place and i was ready to vote NO..(that means Greece out of the eurozone and out of euro) and thats what the majority of the Greek nation would vote for..Then they (Merkel )got afraid of that and they urged our PM not to allow the referendum to take place..

Do I understand this correctly? Are you saying that the Euro-zone was created by European multinational corporations who use a " political class" as their "employees?" This political class is signing away the natural birthright of all Europeans, liberty, to corporations that are making the real decisions now for Europe. This is not just a slam on "Big Government?"

@patcondell I cannot believe that our house of parliament voted no for a referendum on the EU despite nearly 400,000 readers in the UK from one newspaper alone handing a petition for the rights for a referendum. But wait....I forgot what a bunch robbing c*nts they really are who are only interested a lining their own pockets.
