The guys booing him at 2:13 are a disgrace to the drumming community. This guy is awesome and deserves respect, as do all the drummers we see at these shows - the ones who influence and inspire us.
Really nice, smooth, powerful funk groove. I'm so sick of most YouTube drum solos that have no groove and no story to tell. Great sounding tubs, too, man...
@Btolbertjr I dunno fam....maybe the reason he's so clean is because of what I said before G is predictable and soooo many folks sound like him (Especially on the swung grooves).....Eddie plays more jazz so its okay to sound a bit dirty at times but E has more to offer IMO......they only thing they got in common is the Heyward bounce.....LOL
@Moog167 eddie is more risky thats all he has over Gerald...if your around when ed is sheddin he's does care to fall off the one or go over the bar or lose a stick n so on but that makes him very sloppier than gerald but as far as having a dirty sound for jazz...i dunno where you get ya info...jazz requires clean sound...def when swinging...maybe that excuse would flyer with rock or metal but not jazz doc not jazz...i am a jazz fusion head n nothin says dirty bout any of the drummers i hear
@Btolbertjr Ed's chops are chops I hear from a lot of straight ahead drummers.
As far as Jazz goes I'm talking about that old school dirty jazz dude. You don't have to be like Weckl and play everything on the beat. theres nothing wrong with playing a shuffle behind the beat like the old school New Orleans 2nd line cat(i.e. Stanton Moore)...Swing can be all over the meter it's all on how the band prefers their time....I'm sure you know like Thelonius Monk was all on and off the beat.
@Btolbertjr I'm a Jazz/Fusion head as well but if go back to cats like Ed Thigpen,Art Blakey,Baby Dodds they weren't always clean sometimes they were on,behind or ahead of the beat.....Sometimes I played with cats that say "Pull your timing back" just to make things right y'dig?
Gerald is one of the pioneers of the Gospel scene.......He pretty much paved the way for Aaron spears and all the other Gospel/pop/R&B drummers in the scene
@MrCalvindavis he might be wack to you because SOOOO many Gospel drummers copied his style.....Gerald is one of the originators of the "Gospel Drumming" scene
I have to say... i think the whole kitis a PDP. Its not a very high quality video, but all the lugs look oval as oppoed to circular. This can be most clearly seen on what people think is the popcorn snare. I could be wrong, im not claiming to be definitely right. Just what i think im seeing.
I would recommend a 2ply head and tuned REALLY tight to get that 'crack' also to make it sound as good as mr. heyward you'll probably need a few bucks aswell:)
EQ, really heavy compression, a tight ass batter skin, and shit loads of reverb. Most decent snare sounds you hear these days has near enough nothing to do with the actual type or brand of snare itself, but more to do with the amount of studio effects being processed on it
Yes i know, but the mics will still be running through a mixer and outboard processors. Just because he is live doesnt make a difference. However i do agree that better instrument quality = better sound, as you cant polish a turd in that respect
GH has so much more soul than a lot of the young guys playing this style today. He has a great attitude about music and drumming (make the music feel good first, highlight yourself last) and it shows in his playing.
i LOVE the side snare he's using.

simonb26189 3 years ago
yes, in a recording situation, but incase you didn't notice this is LIVE and his snare sound is live as well, its just mic'd up.
michaelspeers001 3 years ago 3
Yes i know, but the mics will still be running through a mixer and outboard processors. Just because he is live doesnt make a difference. However i do agree that better instrument quality = better sound, as you cant polish a turd in that respect
simonb26189 3 years ago
@michaelspeers001 It's live, so? They put Eq and compression, reverb as well. Especially in this case when the focus is only on the drums!

You weren't impressed but for the stick tossing? LOL
Not a drummer or simplt know nothing about drumming then I'll assume.
The guy is fantastic and it has nothing to do with tossing sticks.
