Taiwan's HC system was a big mess just like ours is, broken, riddled with corruption by the Health Insurance companies as well as some politicians. so in order to fix their system they sent a commssion to study the systems of 15 nations( except the US), they observed their practices and errors. Why is it that a Doctor can quote you the exact cost of any elective procedure such as breast implants, face lift, etc? But when it comes to any non-elective procedure, they have no idea what the costs are. No free market principles at work now with health care. That is the only industry that can charge you whatever they want. No wonder costs are so high. Why can't they quote a price for a kidney transplant like they do for a face lift? Then we could do comparison shopping.
The free market IS at work in health care. I CANNOT charge whatever I want any more than you can for fixing a car, painting a house, etc. If my prices are too high, the patient can simply go down the street to another doctor just as he would with any other business. Also, I can't just quote every procedure off the top of my head, because I don't know what complications will arise, how bad the condition may be, etc. YOU are not he same as the next guy, a child is not the same as an adult, etc.
I strongly disagree. Doctors ARE in fact charging whatever the hell they want to. I have never been to a hospital and they said your charges will be x number of dollars. NEVER! We never know what the charges are until we get a statement. If I go to a painter he will say it will cost $1000 to paint your house, or a mechanic charges so much per hour. My doctor has never given me an hourly rate so I can compare costs. But if I want elective surgery you can tell me exactly what I will pay.
OK, but how do I tell a patient their surgery will be $1,000 only to find they have an allergic reaction to the medication, they need more anesthesia, they have a problem that requires more invasive surgery than what we saw on the MRI, the medication reacted with another medication they are currently on, etc. Mechanics do the same. I just went in to have my brakes fix, and it cost me $600 more than the estimate because they found something else wrong.
You do it the same way that they do when a patient wants a boob job. They quote a dollar amount. Or a face lift. They charge a set amount. They may have complications too but they can quote an exact price. Mechanics charge by the hour to account for unexpected problems.
Sorry...it's not that simple. Some things are easier, like a standard office visit, but most are more complicated than that. Plastic surgeons are paid cash up front. Most of the rest of us are not. For example, I've had to wait up to 9 months for Medicare to pay. What other profession has to do that? If they were the only patients I had, I would have gone under long ago. The gov. is THE worst and slowest at paying and they cut our bill 100% of the time.
Quit charging 200 bucks for 1 asprin and maybe the bill wouldn't be cut. Health care is way too pricey. If auto makers could charge whatever the hell they wanted for cars, they would be doing as good as the health care industry right now! There are no free market principles at work with the health care industry. No real competition because the customers can't do any comparison shopping, unless it's an elective procedure. Only when its a medical necessity you are unable to quote a price.
I'm in private practice. Only the hospitals charge exorbitant prices for that kind of stuff. Nevertheless, in their defense, they are required BY LAW, to give away BILLIONS of dollars of FREE care every year to people who supposedly "can't afford it".

We need a robust public option. We have trusted the health insurance industry and they got us in this mess with their greed. I don't know what's wrong with a public option. It seems like the only thing that makes sense to me. A little competition is the only thing that will keep the insurance industry in check. The will have to lower costs or lose clients. Hospitals will have to follow suit and find ways to cut cost. There is no reason for medical costs to be so high.

The stats are pretty clear; more people die from the "treatments" than from the actual diseases.

Here is a brief history of Taiwan's Health care system. During the 1980's al throught the mid 90's. Taiwan's HC system was a big mess just like ours is, broken, riddled with corruption by the Health Insurance companies as well as some politicians. so in order to fix their system they sent a commssion to study the systems of 15 nations( except the US), they observed their practices and errors. In 1995 came up with the ultimate solution comming up in the next slide.

Why is it that a Doctor can quote you the exact cost of any elective procedure such as breast implants, face lift, etc? But when it comes to any non-elective procedure, they have no idea what the costs are. No free market principles at work now with health care. That is the only industry that can charge you whatever they want. No wonder costs are so high. Why can't they quote a price for a kidney transplant like they do for a face lift? Then we could do comparison shopping.

I CANNOT charge whatever I want any more than you can for fixing a car, painting a house, etc. If my prices are too high, the patient can simply go down the street to another doctor just as he would with any other business. Also, I can't just quote every procedure off the top of my head, because I don't know what complications will arise, how bad the condition may be, etc. YOU are not he same as the next guy, a child is not the same as an adult, etc.

I strongly disagree. Doctors ARE in fact charging whatever the hell they want to. I have never been to a hospital and they said your charges will be x number of dollars. NEVER! We never know what the charges are until we get a statement. If I go to a painter he will say it will cost $1000 to paint your house, or a mechanic charges so much per hour. My doctor has never given me an hourly rate so I can compare costs. But if I want elective surgery you can tell me exactly what I will pay.

OK, but how do I tell a patient their surgery will be $1,000 only to find they have an allergic reaction to the medication, they need more anesthesia, they have a problem that requires more invasive surgery than what we saw on the MRI, the medication reacted with another medication they are currently on, etc. Mechanics do the same. I just went in to have my brakes fix, and it cost me $600 more than the estimate because they found something else wrong.

Sorry...it's not that simple. Some things are easier, like a standard office visit, but most are more complicated than that. Plastic surgeons are paid cash up front. Most of the rest of us are not. For example, I've had to wait up to 9 months for Medicare to pay. What other profession has to do that? If they were the only patients I had, I would have gone under long ago. The gov. is THE worst and slowest at paying and they cut our bill 100% of the time.

If auto makers could charge whatever the hell they wanted for cars, they would be doing as good as the health care industry right now! There are no free market principles at work with the health care industry. No real competition because the customers can't do any comparison shopping, unless it's an elective procedure. Only when its a medical necessity you are unable to quote a price.

We need a robust public option. We have trusted the health insurance industry and they got us in this mess with their greed. I don't know what's wrong with a public option. It seems like the only thing that makes sense to me. A little competition is the only thing that will keep the insurance industry in check. The will have to lower costs or lose clients. Hospitals will have to follow suit and find ways to cut cost. There is no reason for medical costs to be so high.

Yeah, the government is so good at running things without any waste. It is not competition when the government is digging into the pockets of the people & printing endless piles of cash to "Compete" with private industry. Some regulation buy people not on the take (like 99 percent of politicians) is the only way to get the insurance industry to behave.
The insurance companies have brought most of this on themselves, but the government is the only thing that is more scary.

Medicare, Medicaid, and social security are already on the verge of bankruptcy. It'd be easier to have confidence in our gov. if they handled our current system well.

The answer is simple as some of you might ask. The problem started with the government and the FTC and Fair Trade Laws uninforced. Small medical groups bought out by giant medical groups like Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Kaiser, etc. creating monopolies and a grab on costs with no competition which is against the Fair Trade Laws, thus today we have unabiated healthcare costs with no cealing in sight. Break up giant healthcare insurance companies and get competition back into the system.
