Very likely the biggest waste of resource and energy the world has ever seen...In a hundred years they will look at this useless monstrosity and wonder if all these participants had mullet hairdo!!
Is it one giant crankshaft or how ever many geared down to one drive shaft? If the latter, then you've coupled several engines rather than a single prime mover.
This was why we moved to turbines, lots less moving parts and much more reliable. One of these cylinders becomes hydraulic locked(which is rather common in radial engines) then you'll throw a rod and chances are ruin everything else in that engine.
42 cylinders is very feasible when you have your own team of mechanics for maintenance and you don't care if a random thrown rod detonates your engine while your driving with 2 barrels of fuel in it. Seriously these idiots should just make a rocket instead.
@Galley415 Pull Better?? Lets but that engine to something other than that tractor thingy and hitch around 90 tons of weight(or more) back to it and see how good you'r cummins pullz it ;)
Pretty good mechanics if they're able to double the power of an engine that was pretty much optimized already. Or are you stretching the truth just a tiny bit?
@dcarriger Because it's huge. The bigger an engine is, the greater the forces acting upon it, these forces increase exponentially in relation to size and also speed. Eventually it rips itself to pieces.
this is what happens when you rely on a carburetor to fuel a radial engine that big...uneven fuel distribution, too much too the bottom, not enough to the top, great idea, but does shit in reality
@TheKozary diesels are fuel injected.... infact their direct injected, in fact im almost 100 percent positive that all dragsters are fuel injected because carburetors are too inaccurate for racing in modern times. all you need is bigger injectors. look at the street, 1000hp cars are quiet common now, think about the drag teams that have a whole work shop devoted to their engines.
@TheKozary well yea, cuz thats 2500hp, how many stock factory built cars do you know of that throw out 2500hp just for shits and giggles, thats why they have those shops cuz the amount of power they put out always ends up fucking something up, its just a matter of time and odds till something fails, so they have to be prepared
@amurican35 Judging by your username, I would say you're American. An American who can't spell his own country, but an American none the less. Americans, build pointless shit. It's what they do.
@brokenbutterfly8 How can you hate a country? I'm English and I don't hate France, just French people. I don't hate America, just Americans. People are idiots, not countries. (Just so you know, some of my best mates are French and American, I joke, I don't hate them.)
@SirRippingtonEsquire Pepboys? By the way, my largest spark plug order to date was 56. Not for one engine though, but the chaps face when he delivered them.. Priceless.
@Lebaron1987 Depends on what sort of Jet engine. A pure turbojet does not produce power in a way that is comparable to this engine (A pushing force rather than a rotational force) A turbofan has the same problem. A turboshaft engine would produce comparable forces but I don't know if you could make one this big and if you could it would be near impossible to transfer that amount of force to anything, the gearbox would have to be huge.
@boogereater987 Well, it probably can't take corners anyway, though most american stuff can't either. And, to be fair, most of the 'deep south' is full of inbred 'redneck' weirdos anyway. (Deep south and redneck are in inverted commas because I disagree with those words. To me, the deep south is Antarctica and rednecks are just idiots who don't actually have red necks.)
@trainsimulator2 Cylinders don't turn. Each cylinder would make one up-down cycle 2500 times per minute or 41.7 times per second. If it is a 4 stroke each cylinder would make one power cycle 1250 times per minute.
@chackers Not everyone uses $ dude. There are other countries in the world. I don't know for sure but seeing as this is in Sweden, I would say it was probably tens of thousands of euros.
i dont know if this engine was properly tested, unlikley as they tend not to test such powerful engines. (same as top fuel v8's theyre all "estimated HP")
Also bear in mind the age of this engine. THink of a triumph 2000 straight six vs a straight six from a skyline (rb26 i think the engine is called) Same engine, very differnt results.
@20110102 Ah, yes. I did not think about that. But you also have to consider the weight of the thing. And the cost! It has to cost thousands of dollars! I mean, the top alcohol dragsters cost quite a bit, but for an engine like this, just, good lord! My personal opinion is that this is just not very useful, and I don't really like it. I would just stick with the good ol' V8's. also @ivanhoe0007 is a Nazi.
@ThaMasterSniper V8s, in my experience, have almost always disappointed. Especially American ones. They are huge but the power in not what you expect. Add to that that a high revving V8 is usually just noise and you have a very large annoyance machine. The exceptions would have to be Ferraris V8s, they have a decent tone to them. Give me a nice straight six. Take it right up through the rev band and hear it sing. Or, a big V12 screaming its guts out. Besides, V8s are boring.
@TheWierdFish I'll have to agree with ya, a straight 6, or a v12. I have a 280zx with a straight six that just doesn't want to stop running. and sounds great.
@AtheistThe Oh, the older Z cars are fantastic, a rally replica 240 is on my dream list. Now, if only I could afford more space to store all my stuff.
@TheWierdFish I can assure you, V8s are not boring. The greatest of all cars, the Ford GT, has a V8. This conversation is over, because I strongly disagree with you.
@ThaMasterSniper The GT? Lovely looking thing, based on the GT40, which was far far greater, which I believe was designed by a British dude incedentally. Anyway, V8s. They sound great a idle, all burbley and mean, then they just become white noise, a wall of sound-mush. Sixes sing, twelves howl, and tens have this sort of mournful roar. Eights? A good straight 8 has a wonderful snarl but, unless you mess with things like the firing order and manifold layouts (Ferrari) V8=snore.
@TheWierdFish The GT40 was the greatest classic race car of all time. My favorite version is probably the MKIV. But if you think they sound bad when accelerating, then check out the video titled "FORD GT-loud start up, accelerations, and more," or something like that. I do agree with you when you talk of other engines sounding great. My dad has a V6 Mitsubishi Montero. I don't know what he did to it, but it sounds BEAST. I will have to post a video of it. I will inform you if I do
@ThaMasterSniper By what reasoning do you claim the GT40 to be "the greatest classic race car of all time"? I don't think V8s sound bad, they're just boring (usually). The sound produced is generally just noise.
@TheWierdFish Hm? Oh, uh, I dunno. But I disagree when you say that V8s are boring. Oh, and the Mk1 is beautiful! I had forgotten that the Mk1 was one of the versions, thanks for reminding me!
@ThaMasterSniper If anything, I venture to say that the Jaguar D type was the greatest, at least of the Le Mans racers. It was insanely fast, innovative and can still hold its own on a racetrack against more powerful cars that are 50 years younger than it. Plus it sounds actually amazing.
I never said V8s were boring. I said that the sound produced by that configuration is not particularly tuneful, boring even.
As for other great race cars.. Lancia 037. Last RWD WRC champion.
@TheWierdFish You are talking of great cars, but I still think that the GT40 is the best. And you did say that V8s were boring. Refer back to your comment when you talk of how disappointing V8s are. So you did say they were boring.
@ThaMasterSniper Dissapointing as in underwhelming. Case in point, a while ago now, for a week, I swapped my lightly uprated 1961 Series 1 Jaguar E type FHC with a 3.8 litre inline six producing approximately 310hp for a similarly uprated 1967 Shelby GT500 with a 7.0 litre V8 producing. Wait for it. 413hp. (the owner had it properly tested) So, 3.2 more litres and two more cylinders for aproximately 103 more hp. Dissapointment. Plus the Shelby was heavier and accelerated slower!
@TheWierdFish Well, the Shelby GT500 is a SHELBY GT500. It is a muscle car. No original muscle cars accelerated that fast, as they were heavy, but they are cool, because they are muscle cars. Also, I was walking around town, and this guy had a DeLorean. It was freaking sweet! I got to sit in it, and we talked about it for a while. it was awesome.
@ThaMasterSniper I fail to see how writing 'Shelby' in capitals makes any difference to anything. I also fail to see how a car is cool just because it's a muscle car. Muscle cars are stupid, wasteful, slow, heavy, slow and can't go round a corner without superhuman effort. Plus, an awful lot of 'muscle cars' were absolutely hideous great lumps of plastic and sub-standard steel. As for the DMC-12, it was slow, badly made, over priced and leaked like a seive.
@ThaMasterSniper Sorry to dissapoint dude, I'm usually a top. If there's fucking to be done, It's probably going to be done by me. Back to the topic at hand. Muscle cars are, as cars, awful. Some, are quite good looking and those few are therefore worthy of my attention. Others, are actually fast and those handful are also worthy. The rest, I'm afraid, are not. A car should work as a car everywhere. Muscle cars barely work in a land of straight roads and cheap petrol.
@TheWierdFish You are correct, but muscle cars are still awesome even if they suck. They are like the Chuck Norris of the car world. Oh, and the Prius is like the Hitler of the car world. Wait though, Hitler was pretty strong, so the Prius is just a crap in the toilet.
Tractor pulls in Sweden? I thought they were smarter than that.

Mk1 GT40, by far the prettiest.

TheWierdFish 1 month ago

@TheWierdFish F*ck you.
