Daddy and I used to board horses on our Tennessee farm and I remember those late 1950's afternoons going out with him to clean the stalls, water and feed the animals. We had a rudimentary stereo hook up in the barns and Daddy would put on radio music like Sonny James, Kitty Wells, Red Foley, Faron Young, Patsy and so many others. That Music made our memories and it made our work out in those old hot barns seem less of a chore and more of a dream.
So many memories of youth and family are connected to this song....my mom had this single and whenever she played it I reacted in a big way for a small child. I didn't know what Country music was and I thought all music was music. Radio was like that back then, plenty of room for all kinds of styles.
@kumhuiguitargirl That's exactly what I wanna know!!!!???.... hmm kumhiguatar <--sorry-- anyway I think we're thinking the same thing... MSG me and we'll find him together :)
There's no comparison between the classic country and the newer country. Back then, the music was just exceptional. This song is an example of how perfect and timeless it truly was. Thanks for sharing.
I had the honor of meeting Sonny James a few days ago, and he definitely lives up to the title of "The Southern Gentleman"! Visit ClassicCountryCafe for an article about my experience with Sonny James, and a ton of great videos and articles featuring more legends of traditional and classic country music!
I remember this song from my high school days back in the mid 50's. In fact it was one of my favorite songs that I would play on the juke box then. Sure brings back memories. Thanks for putting it on.
Watch Sonny's fret hand in this or any video... It's like a very precise and delicate spider working the strings. He's an amazing guitarist and singer.
Sonny's version is so much better than Tab Hunter's! I have been a Sonny James fan for many years and I was fortunate to see him perform live back during the 70's at the "Four Season's Motor Lodge" Convention Center in Gatlinburg. Sonny sounds as good live as he does on his records.
Although, this was a Country and Western Song it was one of the select records that got air play on many of the radio stations in the New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia area. Even to the City people on the East Coast this song along with Marty Robins "White Sports Coat and a Pink Carnation" were popular. At that time Rock&Roll was a combination of music; Pop, Spiritual,DooWop,Blues, and Country. Anyone of them could be a hit. Ron--Highway Stars Magazine

Thank you patinielsen. Music has always been very important in our lives and so was this song. In 1956 we first heard it and from then on until my husbands death in 2007 it was our song. A dear songwriter friend of mine in Texas heard what happened and she and her husband wrote "Right Up There On That Star" for me. My husband was a singer and guitar player too. Wonderful friends...
Ah, that's better! That scratchy 78's probably a valuable heirloom, but this kid's been spoiled by lots of studio sounds. (Dave, you're not a kid at 71!) };-] O.K., huh? Nice that you approve, this time, Tube-spirit.)
Ah, that's better! That scratchy 78's probably a valuable heirloom, but this kid's been spoiled by lots of studio sounds. (Dave, you're not a kid at 71!) };-]
@waserman123 Sorry if I sound a bit dim, but could you tell me where the downloader is, I've been wishing I could download from YOutube for ages but had no idea you could - would much appreciate you telling me how .
Ok, Damian McGinty covered this (Celtic Thunder) And in bad quality he looks like him, though it's offensive to say that, I love Damian, not in that way but he's a crackin' musician
It must be from a variety show that was on a tight running time and so unfortunately the song was severely abbreviated. Too bad, the sound was good too for its time.
@Takoyakiee It could be argued that we can't judge if it's good or bad without watching it. Do you Takoykiee know when a video is bad without watching first?
YoungLove became popular when my husband and I started going together in the '50s. It was our favorite song for 51 years...until he passed away. Sonny James will always be my favorite.
I recall hearing this song when I was a little boy. I still love it today. I sorrow at your loss. My wife and I started dating at age 16 in the 60's our song is "Never My Love" by the Association.
@ggbccb - thank you for sharing this. It's amazing that you look up all the songs of Sonny James and others like him from this time and you see stories like yours. Shows you how important good music can be in our lives.
@ggbccb - thank you so much for sharing that personal information with us. I know you miss your husband but you have these great memories and that makes you very lucky,.
As a 62 year old man, looking back to my first true "Puppy Love" as they call it, this song brings back wonderful memories. It's always been one of my favorite songs.
The Southern Gentleman will always be one of my favorites. Girlfriend and I saw him in concert in Pensacola Florida in 1964 or 5. She and I parted ways, but the memories come flooding back each time I hear Sonny James.
I've always tried to play like my two heroes...Sonny James and Lester Flatt...makes for some odd flat picking...and now that I'm 50 I still haven't got it right
There is a young man in an Irish group called "Celtic Thunder". His name is Damien McGinty, and he does a sweet take on this song. Take a look at his version. Type in "Celtic Thunder", and I believe all of you will have found a new favorite to listen to. Young Love by Sonny James was my parents song when they were dating.
This was my grandparents dating song when they were teenagers. We are celebrating their 50th anniversary this sunday and I am singing this for them =)
I remember the first time I heard this tune. My family was moving to Florida, and we were in my dad's Packard just getting into Orange Park, Florida when the tune came on WAPE. I fell in love with the song on the spot.
Hi Terry, Glad you enjoy the old stuff. Back then was when Country was country...I guess you have to be around our age to enjoy the great classic country....Thanks for your comments.....Your friend Terry....
I am not around your age. I am 21, however I love the 50s and 60s Rock N Roll such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Ricky Nelson, the Classic Country such as Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, the bluesmen like Ray Charles and BB King, and Jazz like Louis Armstrong, and Bluegrass like Flatt And Scruggs, Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe.
There are more and more young people who enjoy that great old music. I hear it from 13, 14 year old boys and girls. And I was born in 1983, and I LOVE the old music and can't stand the new stuff that they do today...
Are you a good person?
