"Mourning" is probably referred to in 2 Cor 7,8-10; 1 John 2,15-17; etc., like in "mourning" and consequential "conversion" expression. Other beatitudes are further development of that. First one, "poor in spirit" is reference on Isaiah 66,1-2;, could be understood as being humiliated before God (no ego, like narcissism etc), also echoes in "who is first, will be last" expression (being unbiased, like in James 2 and other places).
Even if you are an athiest (as I am) you have to recognise that the bible contains some great teaching. This is proberbly my favorite passage in the Bible. It teaches me to observe a karma, and to avoid materialism.
