But there were no negroes on the firing line until the desperate end. Some people claim slavery had little or nothing to do with the war. 4 states issued Declarations of Causes when they seceeded. These can be found on the net. All of them mention one issue and one issue only as justifying their secession, their desire to maintain slavery and their concern that the institution was threatened by the new administration. You can look them up and read it for yourself.

I had heard about 300 free black officers and aids from richmond that joined the Confederate army. And as for pay, they were fed like everybody else.

He also descibes the poor treatment of black soldiers in the Union armies, since he was captured multiple times.

If such a thing were true, why did the Confederate Congress have to pass particular legislation in January of 1865 authorizing the recruitment of black troops?

But there were no negroes on the firing line until the desperate end. Theres an example in SC where a union officer tried to take a position with negro soldiers and they were slaughtered. the confederate defending general wore w. absolute scorn that someone would use negroes this way knowing they haven't the constitution for White man's wars.

Some people claim slavery had little or nothing to do with the war. 4 states issued Declarations of Causes when they seceeded. These can be found on the net. All of them mention one issue and one issue only as justifying their secession, their desire to maintain slavery and their concern that the institution was threatened by the new administration. You can look them up and read it for yourself.

@mlmontagne There were 3000 fighting black men in Stonewall Jackson's army at one time, more than a tenth of the whole army he had a that time. At the beginning of the War, Forrest's cavalry was completely made up of black troops. (Later whites joined.) Forrest's cavalrymen were the best troops the Confederacy had, equaled only by the British Royal Dragoons. Unlike the North, the South didn't care for a man's race, and did not record it.

@hmldjr It is true that in 1865, in an act of supreme desparation, a few companies of black men were enrolled and drilled in Richmond. To the best of my knowledge they were never permitted to fight and were surrendered somewhere along the march to Appomattox. You are correct that they were "paid" the same as white soldiers but the fact is that Confederate soldiers were almost never actually paid anything. It is a tribute to their character that they fought so long and hard with no pay.

@hmldjr, the number of blacks in the Confederate Army was neither 30,000 nor 60,000. It was zero. Although large numbers of black men were used by the Confederate army, dig latrines, haul wood, herd cattle and other menial tasks, those men were not uniformed, drilled, armed, nor did they have rank. Like the animals they often tended, they were, to a man, somones private property and they were no more in the army than the animals were.

Do you have names? I have been researching this and still can't find anything. The number of blacks in the Confederate armies is still in dispute 65,000 to 30,000 I'm getting. As for the medicine pretty bad on both sides. The Confederate medical core had to have been worse because of the lack of trained doctors and decreased availability of medical supplies. Just the logistics precluded much help to anybody let alone prisoners like those at Andersonville.

You can't be promoted to an officer, you have to go to a school, and of course most slaves that were fighting couldn't read, and most whites couldn't either. There were black officers, usually from in units from where free blacks lived, like from the 3000 man-strong 1st Louisiana Native Guards. I had heard about 300 free black officers and aids from richmond that joined the Confederate army. And as for pay, they were fed like everybody else.

And their are instances of a black soldier that was in the confederate army being shot by a union soldier when he was taken to the prison in Chicago. There are newspaper articles in Harpers of southern soldiers bayoneting union wounded.

If this was in the Eastern theatre, the Confederates who bayoneted the Yanks probably ended up being hung. On the most part, Confederate soldiers cared for Union wounded. But Yankees purposely shooting their own men on such large scale is unbelievable. Watkins wrote that more Yanks were killed by the Union in that battle than Confederates.

Watkins actually take the War from a pretty unbiased view, pointing out the faults of both sides that he witnessed. His book is one of the finest pieces of Civil War history we have, and much of the Ken Burns PBS documentary was based off of it. But they left out the 'politically incorrect' parts. He also descibes the poor treatment of black soldiers in the Union armies, since he was captured multiple times.

@hogrider985 The Emancipation Proclamation only included what were deemed as "rebelling territories" (parts of the Confederacy not already taken back by the Union) because they were not subject to Lincoln's war powers. All of the states in the Union except the four boarder slave states were already free states. And besides, Congress ratified the 13th Amendment two years later. Although the main cause of the war was not slavery, saying that the war had nothing to do with it is false and ignorant.
