Actually, I'm Hmong. And as far as I know about my people's history, we came from China known as the Miao people into the mountains of Laos then because of the Vietnam War, we beccame refugees in Thailand and then immigrated to the US, but I know nothing farther than that. But to be direct on your question, am I Chinese or Japanese.... I'd say Chinese.

They are definitely not 90% the same. Japanese has 2 of it's own writing systems and it's own grammatical structure (ひらがな &　カタカナ). The only similarity is that Japanese borrowed a set of Chinese characters, which they assigned similar meanings to, but with completely different pronunciations. So for example, to say 中国 (China) in Japanese, it is "Chuugoku," in Chinese it's "Zhoongguo." They only use the same characters.
