When it was first set up in the late 1950s, the airborne SAC command post was called "Mirror", presumably to show its mission as replicating the underground CP functions. At the time it was on ground alert (like today), but when it became a round-the-clock airborne mission in 1961 the name was changed to the less mushy-sounding "Looking Glass"
The E-4B was code named "Nightwatch" and the predecessor aircraft were EC-135 aircraft. The static call sign for "Nightwatch" aircraft was "Silver Dollar". The "Looking Glass" code name was for the Strategic Air Command airborne command post, which also served as a static call sign for years. The aircraft was an EC-135C model. The SAC network of command post and relay aircraft was called "PACCS" for Post-Attack Command and Control System.
@Thewestcoastshooter the navy E6B Mercury is now charged with operation looking glass, not the E4B. Operation Nightwatch was taken over by the E4B in 1974, as the EC-135 was still in use during looking glass.
@tigerswede3 You are exactly right! what confuses people is that the Miliatry used the code name "Looking Glass" twice, for two interrelated efforts. Operation Looking Glass is the US Startegic Command airborne connand post. PROJECT LOOKING GLASS on the other hand, is a code name of the entire network of Military Airborne Command Posts, including the Nighwatch (E-4) and Looking Glass (EC-135/E-6).
