@shiverunit and DMSiLenTNinJa there tends to be alot of confusion there. Duh thet relied mostly on the shield because it is the key component of the Phalanx but the also wore metal plating over their layered lamalar armor which was used by most other city states. though there is some confusion because when people do analysis of thermopolea the often talk about all the greeks as a group having lamalar armor
@TheAwesomeOpossumCo I totally agree, they looked too much like egyptians with the bowl helmet and such, the robes are unrealistic, spartans would wear very little and their shield would act like body armour.
@shiverunit No what I meant was, they wouldn't wear much in the way of clothing (robes etc) and spartans used their shields a lot to defend themselves, their armour consisted of a bronze chestplate and a helmet that was designed to scare their enemies but from the books and pics i've seen, spartans mostly used their shield.

@vinmaster25 on rome, you have to complete a campaign as romans to use a different civilization, but you can mod files to get all of them instantly, on napoleon you can do campaigns of the coalition which is Great Britain, Russia, Prussia or Austria

@vinmaster25 Oh, I have fun playing Shogun 1, and that is ancient lol Rome total war in my opinion is the best, it has lots of mods, it is my favourite time period and its so fun to be able to "be" romans. The graphics do look fantastic, but I recommend looking at shogun 2 if graphics are what you are after, but gameplay-wise, Rome is a perfect choice and I guarantee you will enjoy it, when you get bored, download some mods and boom, you'll have fun again, hope I helped :D

@Pinxixus Wrong, the pass was called the Hotgates, and it was a Pyrrhic victory for the Persians, they lost a huge number of soldiers and wouldn't win another battle like that. And 300 isn't a fictional movie if its about a true-story. Another thing, the battle of Plateau afterwards had some 30,000 Spartans, if I remember right. 300 Spartans do that much damage, how much did 30,000 do?

It is based on a really old battle that did occur, yes, but it is about as far away from a documentary you can get. Read up on the hoplites. Their strength was from the front = impenetrable, which is why they did so well at Thermopylae - as you say. But in the open when getting flanked and surrounded - they kind of suck.

I've played this game so many times I 've lost count. The first thing I always do is to disband my peasant companies. They are beyond useless. The Spartans are excellent troops but not usually a match for the Roman legions, particularly the heavy Urban chorts.
@Strangefingshappen In real life, Spartans were the GREATEST warriors of all time and peasants in those days would have been incredibly weak and unarmed, even now-a-days citizens who aren't police or military have next-to-nothing in combat training. I think a Spartan could handle a lot more than 29 peasants.

@TheAwesomeOpossumCo I totally agree, they looked too much like egyptians with the bowl helmet and such, the robes are unrealistic, spartans would wear very little and their shield would act like body armour.

@shiverunit No what I meant was, they wouldn't wear much in the way of clothing (robes etc) and spartans used their shields a lot to defend themselves, their armour consisted of a bronze chestplate and a helmet that was designed to scare their enemies but from the books and pics i've seen, spartans mostly used their shield.

LOL i love total war series but dont have 1 yet! I have a question. On total war rome edition do you have to be roman? same as napolean total war do you have to command 1 civilation or any? ;)

@vinmaster25 on rome, you have to complete a campaign as romans to use a different civilization, but you can mod files to get all of them instantly, on napoleon you can do campaigns of the coalition which is Great Britain, Russia, Prussia or Austria

@vinmaster25 Oh, I have fun playing Shogun 1, and that is ancient lol Rome total war in my opinion is the best, it has lots of mods, it is my favourite time period and its so fun to be able to "be" romans. The graphics do look fantastic, but I recommend looking at shogun 2 if graphics are what you are after, but gameplay-wise, Rome is a perfect choice and I guarantee you will enjoy it, when you get bored, download some mods and boom, you'll have fun again, hope I helped :D

@vinmaster25 Just search rome total war mods and one should come up, Its most likely not your computer, just maybe your internet? Is your internet normally fast with online games, if it is fast, I don't know your problem, but search on google and maybe your problem can be fixed, sorry :D

Have a cheat for you on the campaign: Press the ` button, and it brings up this interface ("Welcome to something**") - type in this: add_money 40000 OR give_money 40000 (Can't remember), and also, for BIG elephants, type in oliphaunt, and you will receive VERY BIG elephants.

@battlewalker2354 - 300 is a fictional movie. Also that was in a pass. Thermopyle. You are in the open with enemies all around. And if you knew your military history you would know that phalanxes did get destroyed very easily once out flanked.

@Pinxixus Wrong, the pass was called the Hotgates, and it was a Pyrrhic victory for the Persians, they lost a huge number of soldiers and wouldn't win another battle like that. And 300 isn't a fictional movie if its about a true-story. Another thing, the battle of Plateau afterwards had some 30,000 Spartans, if I remember right. 300 Spartans do that much damage, how much did 30,000 do?

@angryboy2k9 - Actually you are wrong. Read my other posts. Well, technically you are right about a couple of things, but nothing that contradicts me. 300 is a fictional movie. It is based on a really old battle that did occur, yes, but it is about as far away from a documentary you can get. Read up on the hoplites. Their strength was from the front = impenetrable, which is why they did so well at Thermopylae - as you say. But in the open when getting flanked and surrounded - they kind of suck.

@Pinxixus They already did once :D At the battle of the Hotgates? The 300 Spartans? Yes they had support but Sparta WAS the superior fighting-force in Greece at the time and the only support they got was from their own slaves (Un or poorly armed) and soldiers from other states of Greece, who's troops were the equivalent of peasants in the TW games.

In the battle of Thermopylae the Spartan Phalanx could only achieve what it did BECAUSE it was in the pass of Thermopylae. Also, the Spartans lost. But that is besides the point. Notice my words: "That amount of Spartans could never win in a situation like that in real life". The situation in this case being surrounded and outflanked by a numerical superior force. Phalanxes scattered when flanked.

@angryboy2k9 - And the support from the other states of Greece was hardly equivalent to peasants in TW games. You watch to many movies based on comic books. Even in your fancy movie the Spartans die horribly once surrounded. Read up on the strengths of the hoplites. They were almost impenetrable from the front, yes, which is why they did so well at Thermopylae since they couldn't be flanked - at first. But when surrounded they die. The Romans showed them that.

I've played this game so many times I 've lost count. The first thing I always do is to disband my peasant companies. They are beyond useless. The Spartans are excellent troops but not usually a match for the Roman legions, particularly the heavy Urban chorts.

@Strangefingshappen In real life, Spartans were the GREATEST warriors of all time and peasants in those days would have been incredibly weak and unarmed, even now-a-days citizens who aren't police or military have next-to-nothing in combat training. I think a Spartan could handle a lot more than 29 peasants.

@seedo201 You didn't answer my question. Also they didn't make propaganda, propaganda is a trick to getting people to sign up for the army, the Spartans were trained from birth so they technically didn't sign-up for anything.

@angryboy2k9 yeah. that what we only know about them that they are trained from birth but what is there achievments? no major one. the most famous battle was a defeat and they were only 300 in 2000 soldiers army and in phalanx formation makes you impossible to run even if you are coward. and anyway phalanx formation make it impossible to make any heroic act even as in movies or you will find your self fighting witha knife and 3 meters spear so it's certain death

@Pinxixus true and when their king exiled to alexandria and worked as mercaniries they didnt hold the line and the newly recruited Egyptians hold the line and make the battle won after most of the greak mercinary flee in battle of rafia. for me they were so bad but in thermoplai the persians can't attack except from the front and a frontal attack against phalanx is already known the result from it :)
