I just love the fact that Birgit came from an upbringing that seemingly would inhibit her from becoming an opera singer, and it did anything but! So encouraging to hear that such a great soprano like Nilsson had devastating experiences on her way to the top just like the rest of us opera singers trying so hard to make it. I am VERY grateful to have seen this interview! She is proof that emotional resilience is of great value. Love that Birgit Nilsson - one of my heroes :)
God, he is so annoying! No, like Ms Birgit said, Wagner is NOT the most demandig composer (Like Callas said, Wagner is easier in every way compared to Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini...), each and every composer has its own style and demands. He is so narrow minded.
Bernard Levin loved Wagner too much (Wagner's my favourite composer, too). But I think his insistence that Wagner is the most satisfying composer (1:50) is a bit rude, I think. He posed the same question in his interview with Sutherland -- suggesting that the stuff she sang (whipped-cream opera as it were, the bel canto) was not quite full music, without depth because it wasn't Wagner.
@2Emile I agree i find him annoying in that sense. Every composer have pieces with it's own difficulty, some work by the bel canto composers are of extrordinary difficulty (Norma, Armida), and some work by Wagner too.
wow, thank you so much! Birgit nilsson is truly a consumate artist!
Unlike many fo the Hollywood stars we see so often today, Nilsson is truly humble and genuine. She's a real person, not plastic like many of the people that we see.
What a singer, what a person! She was the first ever, who told me 1995, that with my kind of voice I should sing the role of TURANDOT, and not LIU! Well, I was a beginner that time, and was very surprised to hear this from my idol... Only now, being able to sing TURANDOT, I understand how right she was with her advice! Thank you for posting this video.
Merci Beaucoup Onegin! What a great singer she is....if you have more we would be forever grateful...! bless you enormously for sharing it with us....

The lie of Wagner..... his music is VULGAR! this poor woman should have used her voice to sing real music - Italian, or French.
