wow, this is really cool and im super glad i found your page. i turn wood on a lathe and would love to try and make some of these simple entertaining toys. youtube needs more videos like this.
This same sort of thing would work with a paper clip and a pencil. It doesn't work all the time, but every once in awhile I get it to work. I loved doing it when I was in second grade.

This woodpecker was purchased, but you should be able to find springs at a local Ace Hardware store, or online.
