Why is Wynton the only one with a sense of musical integrity? I'm a trumpet player, and I have to say all that high-note just for the sake of high-notes is utter bullshit. It's not expressive, it's straight up annoying. The only high note players that were cool to listen to were Morrison and occasionally Faddis.
@refesq88 One quality a trumpet player needs is range and these guys want to show it off. It might be annoying but it's extremely hard to do. I'm a trumpet player too and I totally agree with you that its not all about the high notes.
HAHA!! Funny how so many people will criticize any of this monster players; all of them good at what they do...Wynton jazz soulful, Faddis super high note player and as soulful than Wynton, Morrison incredible technician, Arturo everything on the same package.I will like to see any of you that don't like any of them try to measure with then live on the stage. From my part I don't like that much Wynton. The only thing that I do the same is hold the trumpet on my hands.
By de way tu tocas piano?
Haha Arturo's face at 3.37 after Faddis just holds some phat note, you can see in his expression he's like 'why aren't you playing really fast and really high?' made me giggle at least..
This is awful. This is everything I hate about trumpet playing. Individually they have all done and will continue to do musical things of substance but this is ego-driven pants-off trumpet playing. And why would Arturo play without a mouthpiece? Sounds dumb. IS dumb.

@orecha28 Frustrated? I just dont see the point of taking out your mouthpiece to have a poor sound. I mean, he could play (with a mouthpiece) what he played without one and it would just sound better.
these guys overall are pretty good but one guy was a bit out of breath and another was a little high in pitch but the 3rd or 4th guy was epic while using his hand as a muffler
again to all those who think this is just button pressing...transcribe these licks and see if you have the same opinion...there is a reason it sounds good
are you not LISTENING to what comes out of james morrison's horn? truthfully they're ALL playing some intense shit, they're some of the best players this world has to offer
@johngreynolds id like to see you go up there and play anything of that caliber. i can gaurentee you cannot. you think it is a pissing contest cause you dont understand the concept of jazz improv and thats what they are doing so playing this with clarity and that range on the spot is a great feat in itself
@johngreynolds Each is a monster. Each has snatched the brass ring. They all are super great! But throughout this world we know that there are other greater players who could put these men in their pocket. Players who the mainstream will never know about. There is always a bigger dog. Some people like vanilla and some like cherry. It's all icing on the cake.
Look, how these guys act. In the one corner we have a Marsalis, who is trying to connect the four musicians into some kind of melodic dialog. Maybe Faddis would follow, sometimes he seems to be affected. But then comes the biggest blower of aaaall times and puts such a sportive competition thing on the show - and ruins it all. When ever will Sandoval stop defining his ego on high notes. He does it always and did this with Gillespie to. That respectless idiot.
I would like to tell the people who are saying this is just random button presses: when playing the trumpet you have to sync your fingering, your lips and your tongue all at once. And playing as high as these trumpet players are is an incredible feat to achieve with a clean sound, and without adding additional pressure to the mouth piece. So try it yourself before saying it's easy. :)
@MusicalB0y truth, i could get to G5 and ended up tottaly whacking my lips, it doubled the size... now l get to C6 without any bruising, althoug it stills makes my head spin, a lot!
i used to play just like this, and yes it can hurt alot to play tht high...and to be able to play fast within the chords...or bebop is fun and takes hours and hours of practice...i wish i could still play like that, but i put down the trumpet, my holton, before i went into the army...dumbest thing iv ever done....
i used to play just like this, and yes it can hurt alot to play tht high...and to be able to play fast within the chords...or bebop is fun and takes hours and hours of practice...i wish i could still play like that, but i put down the trupet, my holton, before i went into the army...dumbest thing iv ever done....
Got better and fabulous. These gents started respecting themselves, then broke down and ended up playing a seamless jazz Jai Alai demonstration. Wow! Whats love got to do with it?
this video is awesome... Morrison gives some master class about playing trumpet and Arturo about how make high notes in trumpet...they are just masters...
xD i like how Sandoval is after Marsalis, its kinda like Marsalis its tryin to keep the melody going then Sandoval and the rest are like wah!! look what i can do
@7222Brit It's called trumpet sparring. Wynton can't compete with them as far as range... and being a trumpeter myself, it's hard not to compete with the guy next to you when you're trading 4's...
Morrison, Faddis and Sandoval are in a technique cutting contest. Only Marsalis is willing to play some melodic down-and-dirty trumpet. Faddis is the man who played 'A Closer Walk With Thee' in the intro to Clint Eastwood's movie 'The Gauntlet'.
Anyway, they're fantastic - and Morrison is on fire. Four of the best in the world...
@ solostrad's comment that Arturo is just a high note player.....you my friend are an idiot. They are all great but this was a venue for the players to try to out do each other. and if you have the ear to hear it, Arturo is like Clifford on Meth when he solos. He can go 1000 MPH and you can still hear every note and a line of thought. You don't have to hate on one player to love another. They're all awesome!
your right!!! he's just trying to show off. Naturally, as a highnote player i love arturo. However, when it comes to soloing Arturo doesn't even come close to
moi je vois qu'un seul improvisateur dans cette vidéo qui tente de faire quelque chose de bien et de l'autre côté il y a 3 mecs qui font un concours d'aigus... oui c'est cool mais 4:45 ca parait long pour wynton
What is one man's trash can be another man's treasure. This is meant to be showy, not expressive. Whether you like it or not, depends on what appeals to you. Maybe even your mood when you hear it. There are showcases of master musicianship all throughout the clip, of a wide varitey. It is awesome to see so many masters together demonstrating their abilities.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I was in the "mood" to hear something good and this didn't quite do it. They just need to slow down. Masters? I haven't even heard of these guys except Mangelis had the song "Feels So Good".
My band only decided to start playing jazz about a year ago. But we don't listen to other players because that might change our sound. Check out our new video "In Lieu Of Bessie" for some music with integrity.
@Maultrumpet You might be right about "Feels So Good". As I said I don't really listen to other musicians for fear it will adversely affect my sound. Sometimes I wonder if, after seeing my videos, people are just jealous of the results I've gotten doing things my own way.
@number1trumpet OK, not lol I watched some of your videos and I think I get it. You're a joke group and you got me to watch your videos. On the other hand, if you're serious and you think that what you do is Jazz or good, you need professional help.
no, almost no one can, what they are doing, although looks like random button pushing, and kind of is, actually requires a LOT of practice and hard work, im assuming you dont actually play the trumpet, or else you would know how much it physically HURTS to play those high notes at times.
@NaltaLife I remember an old teacher along the way said something like, "just to hit C above stave is 25 kg (from Aus), and that's a bag of potatoes right on the space of a ten cent coin". Apparently without forced pressure (maybe be exaggerated jazz story). Remember the first time I improvised ever was at a workshop with J Morrison when I was 13 or so. Trumpets nickname (around my old working mob), "torture tube". Moved on to other things. Just working the brass again. Peace.
While I am a huge fan of all of these guys, Wynton is by far my favorite- the fact that he brings back the musicality to the solo lineup is refreshing, while the other three, bless 'em, are doing the trumpeter one up thing. Wynton is such a musician!
Sandoval is a virtuoso, thats it. Wynton is close but he does not have the ability that a virtuso does. That kind of title is not to be tossed around. To be a virtuoso, you have to have supreme control of the instrument in every method, every kind of piece, and every part of the range (Not this high). Wynton lacks range (Above an F, he starts getting sloppy is you look for it).
He actually can, and he has grace that wynton doesn't.
Besides, then you start reaching into the realm that is unnatural. You go into what is physically possible for some players. Our embouchures are all built slightly differently and allow us to achieve different goals. There is a set standard.
Wynton Marsalis is the best of them...

@7222Brit It's called trumpet sparring. Wynton can't compete with them as far as range... and being a trumpeter myself, it's hard not to compete with the guy next to you when you're trading 4's...
rulyg80 1 year ago
@rulyg80 Wynton has incredible range. Listen to some cd's. His flexibility is amazing. Of course, everything about all of these players is amazing.

LOL Arturo plays without a mouthpiece! BRILLIANT!
I would've paid a LARGE sum of money to be there in person for this performance.

I can tell your band doesn't listen to jazz musicians because you suck! These are the best jazz musicians around.

@number1trumpet Mangelis? Feels so good was by Chuck Mangione who was not in this video. Man, sell you axe and stay away from real music.
Maltrumpet 1 year ago
@Maultrumpet You might be right about "Feels So Good". As I said I don't really listen to other musicians for fear it will adversely affect my sound. Sometimes I wonder if, after seeing my videos, people are just jealous of the results I've gotten doing things my own way.
number1trumpet 1 year ago
@number1trumpet OK, not lol I watched some of your videos and I think I get it. You're a joke group and you got me to watch your videos. On the other hand, if you're serious and you think that what you do is Jazz or good, you need professional help.

no, almost no one can, what they are doing, although looks like random button pushing, and kind of is, actually requires a LOT of practice and hard work, im assuming you dont actually play the trumpet, or else you would know how much it physically HURTS to play those high notes at times.
NaltaLife 2 years ago 22

Wynton is such a musician!
aTuWitty 2 years ago 7
All trumpet virtuosos in a single show..! This is undoubtedly a vey valuable video..! Thank you for sharing pal = )
afro3ilandi 2 years ago 2
Sandoval is a virtuoso, thats it. Wynton is close but he does not have the ability that a virtuso does. That kind of title is not to be tossed around. To be a virtuoso, you have to have supreme control of the instrument in every method, every kind of piece, and every part of the range (Not this high). Wynton lacks range (Above an F, he starts getting sloppy is you look for it).
Though, they are all Trumpet Giants
jerec576 2 years ago
alrighty,,, bet you anything sandoval cant play moto perpetuoso like wynton, or any other piece really. sandoval cant double tongue for crap.
pacman80500 2 years ago
He actually can, and he has grace that wynton doesn't.
Besides, then you start reaching into the realm that is unnatural. You go into what is physically possible for some players. Our embouchures are all built slightly differently and allow us to achieve different goals. There is a set standard.
jerec576 2 years ago
@jerec576 jajaja no sabes un carajo de wynton arturo esta muy por debajo de wynton marsalis!!
