I don't understand how he can panic like that. Although not trained to fly in complete IFR, you have at least 3 hours of hood time, with unusual attitude recovery training as part of your PPL training.
He thought he was going to die, that's why he's panicking. In a longer video of this around 5 minutes long he screams out "help help help" repeatedly.
The controller saved his life, and that being said many PPL's who enter IMC crash and die within an average 178 seconds. This pilot was lucky he had such a good controller on that day, and although the video was a sim I can assure you the audio and relative transcript are real. They use this audio now as a training tool.
He shouldn't have been anywhere near IFR territory. You dont "accidentally" fly into clouds no way. I hope like hell he aint up there when anyone else happens to be around him. You need to either lose or have your Cert suspended.
Could not stay on this long enough to post a decent comment becuase there is too many "professional pilots " giving their wisdom and vast loads of aeronautical knowledge. Im sure they all flew a f-9000 at five hundred thousand feet while cooking a seven course meal in the cockpit. what a load of SHIT,
I seriously don't understand. If you fly VFR into IFR, is it really that hard to monitor the 6 instruments? I am only VFR (don't have IFR) and I always check these instruments while cruising periodically while scanning outside for aircraft and monitoring my PCAS (personal collision avoidance) system.
Only landing is impossible in IFR for me, but cruising should be possible. I would cruise on instruments to a VFR airport.
@dingoklectos my guess is he was in an airplane without an artificial horizon therefor he was disoriented in the clouds.......... although if he was in a 172 he could have operated vfr on top
I have never heard of a plane without an artifical horizon. Only way it won't work is if the vacuum pump fails (generally there is a backup for this also).
@dingoklectos Tomato flames + flaps at night? Remember that? Horizon is not required for VFR operation. Tach Oil press Man. press ASI Temp (coolant) Oil temp Flap pos ind Lndg gear pos ind Alt Mag comp ELT Seat blt + Fuse Lndg lt A/C lt Pos ind, Source of pwr. I admit I had to look it up again. So rusty.
Look inside a Piper Cub sometime if you get the chance. Look inside a crop duster (e.g. AirTractor AT-401), too, although they're starting to pick them up as factory standard.
Horizon is not required for VFR operation but don't you see this VFR guy was in IFR? What if you inadvertently go in IFR...outside view from the cockpit WON'T help.
All the instruments you mentioned in this post are crucial as well. But in IFR...its more than that!
What an absolute idiot not to mention complete sissy pilot, he's screaming like a stuck pig. This is what happens when amateurs get pilot's licenses. Amateur weekend warrior private pilots who crash because they are stupid is what I call natural selection, he got lucky. He's probably the same idiot who walks around bars telling chicks he's a pilot.
@alaskapilot22 Ok, so he has a PPL, which means he's familiar with instruments. Not IFR rated proficient, but familiar. Maybe he's flying at night. Maybe he was out in the country somewhere sparsely populated. Maybe the vacuum system fails on him (Has it happened to you for real yet? If so, you already know where this is going). Could have been in a little pocket of turbulence... and he realizes he hasn't seen a light in awhile. But that won't happen to an old pro like you.
@rjdriver700 1 - Sounds like you've never had a weather briefer get it totally wrong before (personal example: forecast SKC enroute for duration to and from, manage to catch BKN030 coming home. Scud running is... quite exciting).
This video is fake but audio is real, everyone can look it up on FAA.gov in the audio archives. It's used for the purpose of training. Obviously there was no video in the plane so this guy added some FS video to represent what may have happened.
You seem to not understand. The ATC recording is that of a real VFR pilot who went into IFR. The good youtuber made a video of it in FS. You should be thanking him for his effort instead of being a dumb prick.
perfectly reasonable responce from a pilot who does not have an instrument rating. I would also shitmyself if i was rolling and had no clue where the hell i am. This pilot was thinking this is it, going to crash and die, cant see anything, dont trust my instruments. The real hero is the Controller keeping calm and giving advice to the troubled plane. Dont see why people are having such a moan at this!
Why is everyone having a bitch at this video. This is a real recording of a PPL pilot in Fort Dodge. This youtuber has simply made a Flight Sim Video to show you what the pilot would have been going through. Go do some research on it, stick the tail number in good if need be, but making comments such as you little gay prick etc is pathetic! Grow up and f off! Bunch of arseholes, great Video! Kind Regards, JAA & FAA Commercial Pilot
this is actually a pretty famous ATC recording. It's totally real. The audio anyway. Clever guy here added flight sim video on top of it which I think was kind of a neat idea actually. Good job. I believe the FSS specialist (not technically ATC) that took this call won an Archie award for this save. If not a win he was at least nominated.
@DiamondPilotDan im a CPL pilot in traning he is a PPL pilot in other words a private pilot and yes he should not freak out like that but he has no IFR training so it would be like you driving your car down a high way at night with your lights off at 100mph and not able to stop!! you would scream as well!! he should have not flown near clouds but bet ya he wont do that again!!!
@DiamondPilotDan Stick the tail number in Google and then you will realise this is not a fake recording. You sir are the Fake and Gay Prick on here. Kind regards, JAA Commerical Pilot! Asshole!
Not really sure. But if I were you, i would fly only there because the ATC is amazing dude! He saved the pilot's ass...The ATC in my state almost caused me to crash to a hill because he was busy giving vectors to a business jet and neglected us...luckily, I have PCAS I bought from ebay! :) FAA should make PCAS and BRS parachute mandatory for every plane.
@dingoklectos Dear God! Please stop adding more stupid crap to the list! What happened to good airmanship? So many people get caught up in the gadgets and doohickeys that they forget to fly the plane and then do something really stupid and die. Or you get a new C-172 with 13 fuel sumps instead of the 3 on older models because too many dumbasses couldn't be bothered spending 15 seconds total to drain them.
Sorry but you sound like a pinhead! You are contradicting yourself! Good airmanship has a lot to do with maintaining right speed and altitude and trust me, if you are in IFR, when you lose the plane of sight, your sensors in ears start playing tricks about attitude.
Good god, I hope you are an armchair (sim) pilot and not a real one!
@dingoklectos Hell, I like you. I might even go to your funeral. What I want you to do next time you practice under the hood with your safety pilot is put post-it notes over your attitude indicator, VSI, and gyro compass. You should be able to cross check between altimeter, airspeed, and your magnetic compass to determine if you're flying straight and level. Protip: Use the airspeed indicator to help you maintain altitude. Also remember the ANDS and UNOS.
Awwww thanks for coming to my funeral! Over my dead body!...
You seem to reiterate the same things I have been doing for months. Do you realize I had several hours of unofficial IFR training with my friend who is a CFI? I might be better than youtube armchair pilots claiming proficiency with IFR! :) :)
I Love it how this guys calling MayDay, hands off, and his artificial horizon is UPSIDE DOWN!! So...if you enter the soup, forget about what's outside your window, and forget what your body's telling you, and react to what the instrument are saying.
I don't understand how he can panic like that. Although not trained to fly in complete IFR, you have at least 3 hours of hood time, with unusual attitude recovery training as part of your PPL training.

1 - you don't get a weather breifing or
2 - you get a weather briefing and you don't pay attention to it and
3 - you don't pay attention to the REAL weather outside your window once you are up in the air and
4 - you don't keep yourself up to date with distant weather through the weather services in the air plus
5 - you are overconfident in your abilities to get out of IFR if you accidentally fly into it when
