He's a pretty good tribute artist. I heard his live show years ago and he is really a wonderful performer. Hard to believe this was actually on the Tonys.
Actually, for anyone who is at all familiar with Jolson's voice, they would know, without a doubt, that was NOT a Jolson recording. Sorry to Clive, but he simply sounded like somebody who was trying to sound like Jolson. He really doesn't sound much like Jolson at all. As I said, he sounds like somebody who's trying to sound like Jolson.
I'm assuming by your comments that you are able to do so much better, if so please point me to your clip and maybe I'll laugh at you. Clive has entertained for over forty years as Jolie all over the world earning him a reputation as an extremely well respected A1 entertainer.
Allegedly ,the story goes that the very next day the newspapers were full of :-"Did you see that Al Jolson mime artist who was out of sync with the Al Jolson record"! Owing to a technical fault which meant Clive had difficulty hearing his own vocal being played back the critics assumed Clive was merely miming to an original Jolie track and not actually miming to his OWN singing!
This is a great tribute to Jolson, I didn't know they did blackface as late as the 1970's! :)
