This is part of a package called Wii sports. They are a series of sports games which are designed to be graphically simplistic, and played completly through the remote controller only. It also includes Tennis and Golf among others...

These are targetted at mainstream users who may not have the knowhow or time to try to get into something with more complex controls, but is looking for something easy and fun to play.

The game was actually extremely fun if you were there. The graphics were underwhelming, yes, but that's kind of the point of the Wii sports, it's all about hands on fun, accessible by anyone regardless of age and such.

The graphics are simple because it's supposed to be simple. It's part of the Wii Sports game. If you see any of the other games on it like the baseball, golf, or tennis they all have a simple look to them.
