  • this part is more appropriate for the current US audience.

  • I don't think this documentary producer need to spoon-feed the audience.

  • The first 11 episodes do not directly referred to China, or how China can learned from the experiences. The last episode, however, analyzes the success of the great powers, perhaps is the nearest episode of what you are asking for.

  • Contents of this clip

Only 18 out of 265 crews returned, and Magellan was killed in the voyage. However, the epic expedition marked a new page in civilization, a whole globe has came to Europeans. Maps continually changed.

  • @ericspanner hey, my mandarin is horrendous so i cant really watch 'rise of the great powers' properly, what did they say China should learn from each of the great powers?

    cheers

  • Conquest, sea routes and increase in trade of Portugal. A definite "loot" of Spain in America. The fall of Aztecs and Incas ("two American civilization" in the voice over), and the decline in native population.

The first "empire that sun never sets", and the empires of Spain and Portugal. Iberia created a miracle.

  • Statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in Mardid. The poor end of their creator, Miguel de Cervantes. His fates seems echoing to the fate of Spain and Portugal: conquest brought wealth and wealth paid for war and splendid living but not business and manufacturing investment. Also nobles' fear of another power hindered the growth of commerce and industry, even expelled foreign businessmen and craftsmen. Inflation and decline of industry accompained with heavy spending.

  • The hint: no change can result in the fall. Portugal and Spain's story tells. Iberia fading began in the end of 16th Century. The life of folks never improved in the glorious era.

  • while chinese people started building the great wall, ur ancestors were wearing leaves.

  • You are right! Chinese started building the great wall in about BC 200, but the european were still do nothing.

  • read some books before you spread out this kind of nonsense. It only makes you a ignorant fool.

  • The comment about the two Iberian countries lost their competitiveness due to extravance is not exactly true. The decline of Portugal was mostly a result form the Lisbon Earthquake in 1755, which took away the majority of the richness of Portugal and its capital.

For more info, check "1755 Lisbon earthquake" on wikipedia.
