I asked quite a few local people about the beeping and was surprised to find that they justified it as necessary for road safety. I've since been in contact with others who disagree - e.g. Mission Peace in Bangalore - they have some videos of their all be it small protests here on youtube. In other areas the police have begun to take it seriously e.g. in Nashik where for a week there were fines and confiscations of loud horns-it probably had little effect but is a step in the right direction.
wow - interesting idea. I wonder how far you need to go before you can't hear the beeping. I imagine all the shopkeepers are deaf - and the drivers! no peace there :-(
